Used to be leashes were 3 feet or so. You walk your dog it stays within a few feet of you. Now dog owner's have been liberated by these retractable leashes that seem to be 10-15 are up to 26 feet in length. I am sure this is great for the dog and the owner.

My problem is that dog owners feel that it is okay to let their precious 'explore' everyone's front yard. Lovely to see these magnificent animals pee and poop right in the middle of my front yard where my kids play...

A long-time dog owner, I just don't understand why dog owners are so lazy and inconsiderate. For a while, it seemed every time I stepped back to clean up after my dog, I stepped into another dog's waste.

My dogs have been trained to sit and stay afterwards so I can clean up after them - and I do have one of those long retractable leashes.

Now, I carry extra bags with me (I recycle grocery store bags). Nearly all the dog owners I've met along my walk route use as their excuse that they forgot their "poo bag." So I pull one out and say, "it just so happens I have an extra."

If you can't convince them to do the right thing on their own, the next best thing that works is to shame them.

I'm interested in public opinion on this matter:

If a dog leaves sloppy/wet diarrhea on the sidewalk, should the owner be expected to clean it up?

Assume that the owner has no warning that the dog is feeling ill (hence, all she has is a plastic bag) and that the accident happens 500 yards from home.

Get a reverse electrical fence. Jolt any fucking dog that comes on your property.
Personally, I think dogs are a pain the ass. And people that dress their dogs or treat them like people? Fucking douchebags.

Yes they should. Failure to do so is irresponsible on the
owners. I live in a townhouse complex and trust me,
anyone failing to clean up after their pet will be reported
immediately to the all powerful homeowners association. In
one case, an owner left the mess behind on the sidewalk near
my house. I witnessed this through a window and the dog
owner didnt see me. I cleaned it up myself and then "delivered"
it to his doorstep after dark. Hasnt happened again. Any
dog owner should be prepared to clean up the mess every time
they take the dog out.

This is certainly the case for a nice turd, but how should diarrhea be cleaned up? Should the owner go back home and get a bucket of water? Paper towels? I mean, you don't see people sponging up dog urine.

My dad visited and yes his disgusting dog had the runs. I went back with a shovel and bag and grass seed and cleaned up my neighbor's yard. The whole thing is gross. You shouldn't export your mess, your problem to your neighbors. If you do you are a pig.

I wouldnt expect anybody to sponge up the urine, but I have to
consider the consequences if someone (especially a child) steps
in dog poo and tracks it into the house. Our HOA rules do not
differentiate between "nice" and "diarrhea". Overall, our dog
owners here are very responsible. Its the "newbies" who have
failed to read the rule book and in some cases, homeowners who
rent their homes out and fail to give their tenants copies of
the HOA rules. Nevertheless, they will learn quick or the
HOA Police will be all over it. I like it that way.

I completely agree with this. Why would this be different than any other shit on the sidewalk? Clean it up.

Unfortunately, my HOA has signs all over the community and post not so cute little comments in the newsletters about taking responsibility for their dogs. And, that's about as far as it goes - when it has ANYTHING to do with dogs - whether on a leash or running at large.

Last year I reported two dogs running at large. Everyone knows who the dogs belong to, including the police, as they've been picked up more than a few times.

Two members of the board said one of the dogs gets out quite often and comes up to their house to play with their dogs. If a dog is running at large, there's a pretty good chance it didn't "do its business" at home before visiting the neighbors.

Dog owners know which communities are lax and with follow through. If two members of the board in my community are not going to address loose dogs they KNOW about, it's pretty certain they aren't going to do more than TALK about cleaning up after them.

It's a catch 22.

No catch 22 just dont deliver Shit to your neighbors and they wont poison your dog...

This is a very simple problem, with a simple solution. All you have to do is answer one question:

Do you have a yard of your own?

If you answered yes, then that's where your dog gets to shit and piss. Nowhere else. Certainly not my yard.

If you answered no, then you have no business owning a dog.

You obviously don't have a dog. I have had dogs most of my life ... and ... I have a fenced back yard. But dawg and I like to walk and you can only circle the TH back yard so many times before it gets real old .... real fast.

We have trails in Reston that are great for exercise for both of us. Most of the time, she does what needs to be done in the back yard, but when we're out for an hour or more ..... well, that's what the plastic bags are for.

As a fellow dog owner, I make sure that my dog walks/pees/poops on the grass closest to the curb.

I also pickup any dog poop with my doggy bags and dispose of it at home.

THIS IS FAIRFAX COUNTY LAW.

I HAVE told other dog owners that it is the law, and will continue to do so.


As far as those retractable leashes, they are the worst thing for walking any dog. A good 6 foot lead is the best thing for walking/training your dog.

Of course most idiots I see in the street walking their dogs haven't spend one hour actually training their dog ANYTHING.

I like to take my dog on overnight camping trips to Elliot Knob
near Staunton. I can let him run crazy and do not clean up after
him as the possums will find it quickly anyway. Sunday's are nice
too because there's no hunting allowed and very few people are there.
Beware of bears though. Sometimes we go on Friday afternoon and
dont come back until Sunday afternoon. My dog can howl to his
hearts content and nobody cares. AhhhYes....

If you're letting your dog run wild in the woods, you'd better be attentive to him. I used to live in the Staunton are. There is no alot of goodwill for "out of towners" allowing their livestock to run wild with no supervision. Such behavoir only reinforces the bad image "northern Virginians" have in the rest of the state--spoiled, self centered and obnoxious.

Also if your dog is left unattended, bears are the least of it worries. Shotguns are common out that way. So are feelings that loose dogs running deer or--heaven forbid--cattle (feral and unleashed dogs damage alot of wildlife and livestock routinely in rural areas) aren't to be tolerated. Makes no difference if your dog isn't actually doing something it shouldn't. A dog with no owner around is assumed guilty and might be summarily shot.

But, WHY.WHY!! Even if people clean up after their dog do they think it's OK to come on my poperty and let the dog piddle and poo? Because some have no respect for others property. When I walk my dog
I wont let him walk on grass until we get to a community park.
No, you cannot shoot someone because they ignored a no trespassing
sign. You can however confront them and explain why you have
the no trespassing sign. On three occasions I have talked with
neighbors about things like dogs and unsupervised children who
throw footballs into my windows and each time its worked.
If that doesnt work, file a police report.

I am willing to live with piss and dog shit residue on the curb portion of my lawn. Call it a tip of the hat to the old days when the shit would just pile up there. But fuck you if you let your dog 'explore' my lawn half the way up to my front door. I mean really, fuck you. I have half a mind to visit their homes and explore their front stoop on my own. Is there some sort of green-space law that makes it okay to deposit shit and piss in the middle of someones property? Is this some perk of owing an animal. I have a ton of my cats shit I could deliver to my neighbors. Would I? NO. Why would I be so fucking stupid as to dump my pets waste on someone's property? Ok so what is the protocol for the little patch of grass between the sidewalk and the street? I have a small dog (22 lbs) and I NEVER let him go in anyone's yard (we have a retractable leash also, and I carry doggy doo doo bags and pick up everything) but while walking around the neighborhood, he tries to mark on occasion in that small patch of grass. I own a single family in a gated community (so you would think people would have some doggie etiquette), and we have a corner lot. I see a lot of dog owners letting their dogs mark the corner (street sign/post) and I don't get bent out of shape over it. Now if the dog drops a deuce and they leave it, you better believe I will follow them home and it will get thrown in their yard. But is it ok to let dogs pee in that area?

I have a small dog and a very small yard. We let our dog shit at will on our grass on MY property. Anywhere off my property, we will clean it up.

However, about once a month or so is when we do the poo collection, and in the summer, the landscaping company mow right over it. Why do I leave it? Simple, here are my primary reasons.

1 - People like to walk through my yard as a shortcut to go to the mailboxes and it pisses me off. We have sidewalks for a reason, but they ignore it. With a shit filled yard, they use the sidewalk.

2 - I have VERY green grass in the summer, in fact, probably one of the healthiest lawns thanks to the natural fertilizer my dog pushes out of her ass.
