Bristow mom charged after boy, 4, calls 911
http://www.insidenova.com/news/crime_police/bristow-mom-charged-after-boy-calls/article_9218e834-846f-11e3-8baa-001a4bcf887a.html

A Bristow woman was arrested Wednesday morning after her 4-year-old called 911 and said he was hungry.

Police arrived at 8:34 a.m. to find the boy alone at the family’s home in the 11800 block of Frank Haskell Court.

Officers were “eventually able to contact the mother of the victim,” who was charged with felony child neglect, said Prince William County police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

It’s unclear where the boy’s mother went and how long he was left alone.

Love Sonia Altagracia Polanco Franklin, 43, was released on a personal recognizance bond.

I cannot comprehend how a parent could think this was an option? My daughter is twice thate age now and extremely responsible/independent for her age yet I would never ever leave her home alone even for a minute... besides how unsafe it is, it can be very scary for a child when they are left alone.

You really have to reserve your judgement on this one until we find out where the mom was and other such details. Maybe the mom made the boy some cheerios and he threw them away because they were not the honey nut variety? I know my kids have done that and then came to me telling me how hungry they are. Plus, the transcript of the 911 call hasn't been released either, who knows what that kid was talking about. The Potomac News could be cherry picking select comments out of it just to sell newspapers (again).

I just don't think there would be any excuse? If it was about not being fed... the officers would have arrived, seen the boy was not alone and maybe it would have been a issue for social services to deal w/ if they boy was not being fed. The story states the boy was home alone when they arrived and 'eventually' they were able to contact her (which I may be wrong, but sounds like they had to track her down by making phone calls or asking around?). If she came back home, I would think the officers would have stated they were able to 'locate' her or that she 'returned' home.

"You really have to reserve your judgement on this one until we find out where the mom was and other such details." - No you don't. This twit deserves to rot. No excuse for leaving a 4yr old home alone.

Yeah, it's really sad- are parents getting worse or are we hearing about it more? I hope it's the former, but all I see is the latter.

My mom left me alone at 8 with my siblings. She needed to work two jobs. I am a mother and i would NEVER leave my baby alone. I don't know what to think, really depends on the circumstances.

She broke no laws. You people send your kids to public schools which is much worse than leaving a kid at home while going out hooking.

...dead beat parents in PWC:
In Prince William County, Virginia, the law states that:

Children under 8 may never be left alone (for any length of time).
Children 9-11 may be left alone for up to an hour and a half.
Children 12-15 may be left alone all day (but not overnight).
Teens age 16 and older may be left alone all day, overnight, or over the weekend -- although why you would want to leave teens home alone is a whole different matter!

The 4-year old is smarter than his mother.

"wait until all the details are released?" are you freaking kidding me? the mother WAS NOT HOME, and left a child by THEMSELVES. i think that was pretty clear, and thats why she was arrested. how would this not be child abuse? if you think its not, then you are a stupid fucking idiot who should not breed.

you haven't bred yet. IF she was a single mother I could understand she had to make ends meet. It's either pay the bills or be out homeless and evicted in America. Growing up I often had to stay home alone but I was never scared. There are kids in other countries who have to stay at home and cook for their families who are getting home from work. VA law says:

Virginia law is not specific about the age a child may be left home alone, but the decision should never be based on age alone.

No be honest, us older folks seemed to be a lot smarter when we were younger kids by comparison to kids nowadays.

This story made me mad!! Arrested for FELONY child neglect and released. Wonder how long it will take before that gets reduced to a misdemeanor.

That is what is wrong with this world we live in, not the lack of affordable daycare, or the lack of PWC offering handouts to families, it's the lack of justice!

No child that age should ever be left alone in a home, for any length of time. End of story. I know the neighborhood and it ain't cheap, so i doubt she needs the PWC "handout", or the "affordable" daycare. She needs her head examined. And she doesn't look very ashamed of herself in the photo. More the look of "Oh sh*t, I got caught".

And it most definitely IS a different world than it was "back then". In the summer time kids left home when the sun came up and came home when the sun went down. Our parents never feared for our safety or well being, so Bigfoot, either you believe our parents were all a bunch of idiots walking around with their heads in the sand, oblivious to the dangers of this world, or they just didn't care about us, or perhaps, it really was a different world back then. Like it or not..... and obviously you fall into the not category. Everybody is entitled to their opinon however.

What some people posting here are failing to comprehend...she left a 4 YEAR OLD HOME ALONE...NOT AN 8 OR 12 YEAR OLD.......FREAKING 4!!

A 4 YO cannot make rational decisions especially in regards to safety. They are curious and would easily let someone in holding up candy.....

She probably told the kid that, "If there's an emergency or something is wrong to call 911". So when the kid was hungry the child called 911...see what I'm getting at.

That's way to young to leave a kid on another floor by themselves let alone not being home alone.

The world hasn't changed a lick, but we surely have.

It is demonstrably true that the "dangers" faced by children now are no greater nor lesser than those faced by their parents 25-40 years ago. The difference, the reason why many of us have a hard time letting our children out of our line of sight, is that parents today are terrified.

I, too, am a victim of this phenomenon; I don't know when or how it happened. Our family lives in a neighborhood that is virtually crime-free, just like the one in which I grew up. The kids can easily walk to school, just as I did. The difference, though, is that I walked almost a mile each way by myself (of with other kids). Today, each child is escorted by a parent or guardian every step of the way.

What has happened to us?

We have become giant pussies.

First, we decided that both parents needed to work to provide families with bigger houses and newer cars.

And, it's all been downhill since then.

Norman Rockwell move over. Parents these days have to work. The role of mommy home baking pies and polishing the dining room table is over. To survive you have to lock kids inside leave and hope for the best.

Conservatives of course complain if you dont work but here they will complain you do work. They dont support any help with child care or contraception. They want you to work hard all day yet have time to raise a family.

Maybe we just offer military service to anyone having babies. Pregnant? Join the service, even if its cleaning toilets, promise to serve 10 years at a low salary and the military will supply child care, health care and you can shop at the commissary.

What?! Are you serious?? Conservatives want people to work all day AND raise a family? What an outrage!! Those damn conservatives, they're always trying to make us contribute to the economy instead of collecting all the things that we're "entitled" to...like free childcare, contraception, healthcare, and college.

I wouldn't join the military if you want help with childcare (although the military, in my opinion) is entitled to whatever they want because they put their lives on the line for us) - those are the things that our wonderful, extraordinary liberal government only promises. You don't actually think they're going to give that to you though, do you? If you're not a minority, forget it - go get a job.
And if you don't believe me http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/federal-eye/wp/2015/09/10/army-families-stuck-on-long-wait-lists-while-waiting-for-child-care-subsidy-program-report-says/
