I too was horrified when that spelling first started showing up in news reports. But it is apparently now so accepted that it has become the norm. Go figure.

even though the schools where the voting is to take place will be closed.

Maybe they'll pitch a big tent in the parking lot for the delicate computers that are the voting machines.

Actually both spellings, with one L or two, are correct. The spelling with one L is the Associated Press style which most news outlets follow.

“Canceled” is the preferred American spelling and “cancelled” is the British form of the word.

You get the hell out of here with your facts, logic and sense. This is a place for blind outrage about a very important matter.

Canceled with one L is correct according to the federal govt. printing office style manual.

I get that you have an obsession with bashing the FCPS, but at least know what you're talking about before you do.

And, for the record, correct grammar would be: 'Cancelled' spelled incorrectly on the FCPS website.

I belong to one of the top biker gangs. Our sergeant at arms sent out a text today saying the table is "cancelled." THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE!

Oh yeah his patch is history! This was the last time he is going to get away with incorrect grammar.

Last week he incorrectly used a pronoun and an adverb!

Well, if we're going to be really accurate the title of this thread should read,

"Cancelled Spelled Incorrectly....". Since spelled is a verb and needs an adverb as its modifier.

A bit earlier, I was waiting on an appointment and News Channel 8 happened to be on. All of their cancellations reflected "canceled" for the spelling of the word.

Jeez...this is what comes of missing too much school because of the weather: illiterate kids and undereducated adults. This is not a matter of grammar! It is a matter of orthography, the study of spelling!

"Canceled" is preferred American usage, though the British/Canadian form spelled with two Ls is perfectly acceptable. If you want to use it, however, you should cash a cheque, buy a shirt in your favourite colour, then walk from your neighbourhood to the city centre and get a cone of your favourite flavoured ice cream. But be sure to finish it before entering the Museum of Civilisation.

This isn't the only word with this issue. Signal is another one. If you have just come across this problem, welcome to English.
