I noticed that last week when I went there looking for a part for a grill that I bought there about six years ago. The sales staff was helpful and the grill has been mostly trouble-free with some minor maintenance along the way. Most of the grills at big box stores are crap, but this one was well-built and seemed to be designed with replacement parts in mind instead of scrapping the entire unit when something failed.

Commercial real estate will be the next nail in the coffin of our economy.

Retailers folding leaves a lot of empty buildings, most of which are leveraged to the hilt. Wait 'til that foreclosure tsunami starts!

But I guess as the Depression deepens they could be converted into dormitories for the homeless. I imagine a Circuit City store could sleep several hundred?

When your $1.8 million house gets foreclosed, you and your family can move to a nice cozy corner of the Alto Plaza, with a great view!

While things are slow here, Fairfax County, Arlington and Alexandria are going to be fairly insulated compared to the rest of the country because of the Federal government. PWC and Loudoun, however, are different stories.

Walmart is now the biggest toy store in the country.

The problem with these smaller toy stores is they use a lot of shelf space stocking toys nobody wants. They have this idea that there is a huge market out there for educational toys, etc. Unfortunately kids today want Barbies, Bratz, Hot Wheel and video games. Stocking anything else is pretty much a waste of space.

Last nite I noticed that the Box Office Video in McLean had the windows all covered up and is closed for business. I'm surprised a place like that stayed in business as long as it did. Who goes to the video store anymore? Plus there's a Blockbuster right down the street. I would guess alot of these video store dinosaurs will bite the dust over the next year.

Is the one near Old Town still around?

Yeah, I think that place road the "rotisserie chicken" wave that came with Boston Market and Kenny Rogers' Roasters. It is an okay place, but I always thought the chicken was over-cooked at it was very expensive for what you got.

One of the useless furniture stores closed in the new wing in Tysons Mall.. don't remember the name, but only 14 more to go before useful stores can start to populate that area. Earlier in the week they were having a "60% off sale". Walked past it yesterday and everything was gone.

Town Center is losing a lot with Eddie Bauer going. They already lost Sam Goody's Music back in the day, which attracted the "Not so rich". EB is one of the few stores left at RTC which doesn't cater to the Nouveau Riche yuppie masses.

Austin Grill near the intersection of 28 & 29 has apparently gone down. From my few dining experiences there it deserved to, unfortunately. I used to like Austin Grill but at some point they changed the menu and all the food seems to be pre-prepared and unexceptional. A sign has gone up announcing the grand opening of the sports bar taking it's place--Velocity 5 or something like that. Doesn't look like my kind of place.

I used to go to Austin Grill for business meetings, but would never have chosen to eat there on my own. I always thought it was a step below Don Pablo's.

There is actually some good things coming from the retail death watch. A lot of places at the intersection of 29/50 tanked and have been leveled. They are now throwing a ton of stuff in there now. Recently, across the street (I think it was the old Dunkin Donuts?) was leveled. Not sure what is going there now.

So far it's a new Verizon store, Zips (which sucks, by the way... don't take your stuff there), and an AutoZone. Not top notch, but better than another bank.

Sam's finally closed down about 8 months ago. The old building (the Ground Round restaurant chain) was the first to occupy that building. It has since been demolished and retail / strip shopping in being built right now - or, at least the walls are going up.

Ironically, this post had been made over 2 years ago. However, Chicken Out just filed for bankruptcy protection 2 days ago. Good call, though - good vision on a failure in the making.

The shopping center in Chantilly that formerly housed the Shoppers Food Warehouse seems to be dying quickly. I see Jerry's Sub has moved too smaller location in same shopping center. Problem is that storefront is cursed. Everything that has located in that storefront has died a quick death. Hell I remember when the old Book N Card store in Merrifield relocated out there. The furniture store in that shopping center is closing and a number of other empty storefronts.

Wonder what could be done with that site? Rezone and put in high rise? What I don't understand about that area of chantilly is the huge increase in population and what seems too me a lot less retail stores. Where do folks go to buy food in that area if you don't frequent the international grocery? The Bloom way down the street? Did notice the WalMart has a hiring center opened up.

Builders Square - got bought out late 1990's
Dart Drug - closed in 1990
Hechts - bought out by Macy's 2006
Best Products - went out of business in the 1990s

most of these closed more than a decade ago and have zilch to do with the 2008 recession

There used to be seedy magazine stores in Sully Plaza in Chantilly (next to the now-closed SFW) and on King St in Old Town Alexandria too. They're all gone. Gone! Hard-copy porn is rarer than a porn star with an unshaved twat these days.

I remember the one in Chantilly, the sign just said "Newsstand". To their credit they did have the best selection of porn mags in the area. Which actually mattered back in the 90's.

It doesn't surprise me they're gone now, all they sold were magazines. Who the hell reads magazines anymore?

That Washington Sports Club at 50/29/236 will probably die a slow death with the XSport gym that just opened up down the road.

xSport is going to hurt a few gyms in the area. New facility, spacious, clean, and affordable.

The Chantilly store had an outstanding selection of Asian porn. Talk about easy money -- selling pics of nubile asian girls to americans.

The Fairfax City Bloom will be closing due to underperformance, and the remaining stores will be converted back to food lion

Adding:

They're doing it to work on brand strategy? I would say - solidifying their position as a shitty grocery store.

They should keep Bloom and close all of the Bottom-Dollar stores. Those are probably the shitiest grocery stores in the area.

That is a lot of stores to shut. I was wondering if they were going to close the one near Duck, NC. Seems not. That is the only real grocery store on that portion of the outer banks.

That sucks! Bloom is actually a decent store to shop in.

Sucks to lose the Annandale Bloom as they always had a good selection of beer which was always cheaper than Giant and especially Safeway.

The Bloom in Fairfax City has always kind of sucked compared to the Giant up the street, and now that there's a Walmart with a grocery section right next to it, it's no wonder it's closing.

Zero sympathy here. That WSC at 50/29/236 was a huge ripoff for quite some time. Not too long ago, they wanted close to 60 bucks a month for their facilities. I checked just now and it looks like they are asking 49 a month. Guess they finally had to wait for a gym to open down the street to get the clue (or just a 2012 sale). 60 bucks a month.. for what? Not 24 hours, no pool, limited classes, and limited floor space.

What a great place that was, they used to deliver beer to Mason campus. Two cases of Keystone Beer and a BLT was the standard order, their cheapest beer, their cheapest sandwich, and their maximum beer order. The only problem was finding someone willing to pay $2.25 for the sandwich. The delivery guys knew they could forget a tip for lugging that haul up from whatever parking spot they could find.
