FCPS spend 1,000,000 on legal fees

This e-mail serves as the response to your request for information received January 3, 2014, pursuant to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (VFOIA).

Fairfax County Public Schools Division Counsel incurred legal fees in the amount of $1,636,398.17 from January 1, 2013 – November 30, 2013.

Sounds pretty cheap to me.

FCPS gets sued all the time. Should they not defend themselves and just pay whatever the plaintiff demands? Do you think that would be cheaper?

150,000+ students, 20,000+ employees, probably more. A 2+ billion dollar budget and only 1.6 million in legal fees. That's amazingly low.

They already have a general counsel on staff. Plus they hire top money firms to go after guys like Sean Lanigan, trying to deny him lawyers fees rather than firing the screw ups who let the situation get out of control. The central office is totally unaccountable to anyone, as the Bradsher episode demonstrated

OP, you were schooled by the post above that pointed out how small the total is given the size of the system. My kids got a great education in FCPS schools and are at great universities now. Of course, my kids are smart, so your kids' experiences may differ.
