looking for private pond for pet turtle
Posted by: Mitch ()

Hello
I have a pet turtle that my family has had for a number of years. He is very healthy, he just keeps growing and it has become a challenge to keep him indoors. I am looking for a private pond that he could transition to. He is the type of turtle that would do well in this environment and would hibernate in winter. I would appreciate any recommendations.
Thank you.
Mitch

It is against federal law for you to release your diseased ridden, invasive species turtle in ANY pond, private or not.

It is not illegal and if it is FUCK THEM!

You can release it on many golf courses locally, just do it in the evening.

Proabbly. I've seen people releasing it on the golf course at all hours of the day.

A pet turtle that has been captive from a young age has zero chance of survival in the wild. Turtles simply should not be kept as pets. Unlike cats and dogs, they are a very bad match for humans.

Golf course lakes are hugely polluted - find a nice private pond somewhere on google. If it's on someone's property, just slip over after dark and let it go.

Also consider doing it in spring. It's getting cold and he might have to hibernate soon, which'd be a shock to the system. Wait till spring and give him a chance to get into the rhythm of things.

I agree. Golf course lake are full of pesticides and fertilizers. There are some ponds in Dransville District park.

Turtles do not do well in the wild after being domesticated, why not take it to the Reston Pet Zoo and have them use it in the petting zoo area. Setting a domesticated turtle loose in the wild is a death sentence, shame on you!

but most likely it is. You're just another dumbass from this area and most likely white. How the fuck can you keep a defenseless animal for years and domesticate it and have it get used to your family then just want to throw it out because it's become a burden for you? Take it to a shelter dumbass since it's not really a wild animal but a pet they will accept it fuck face.

With relatively few predators, turtles are very adaptable to being returned to the wild if done properly.

It's too late in the year to release him - he'll freeze to death before he can dig a decent burrow. Keep him until late spring and then let him go in a small inlet near a larger body of water, preferably in a protected park area. Somewhere near the Occoquon Reservoir would be ideal.

Another white dumbass. Reston zoo's owners had felony charges filed against them for animal abuse and for killing a wallaby and dumping it in a trash can. Read the news!
