All ideas welcome on deer control
http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20140103/OPINION/140109794/1065/all-ideas-welcome-on-deer-control&template=fairfaxTimes

Things are getting interesting on the deer management front.

Last month, Fairfax City officials signed off on a pilot program to control the deer population by removing the ovaries from females. Under the program, does are anesthetized using a dart and then transported to a central area where veterinarians perform surgery.

According to the program’s director, Dr. Anthony DiNicola of White Buffalo, Inc., the animals are in surgery for about 11 minutes and efforts are made to ensure that they don’t feel pain during or after the procedure. All of the deer receive an ear tag to mark that they have been captured, and a few are given radio collars so researchers can continue to track their movements.

DiNicola, who estimates that 50 to 75 deer currently reside in Fairfax City, said the procedure costs about $1,000 per deer.

City officials have taken their share of heat — both locally and nationally — since introducing their plan. Some criticized the program’s cost, while others questioned its effectiveness.

On the cost front, DiNicola says he was able to cut the costs in half for a deer sterilization program in Maryland by securing volunteer assistance from local veterinarians. It’s also worth noting that the program will be funded by a grant — not city or taxpayer funds.

As far as the program’s effectiveness, similar programs in California, Missouri and New York have resulted in a 10 percent annual reduction of the deer herd.

With such a large deer population in many parts of Fairfax County — some county parks are believed to contain more than 200 deer per square mile — implementing Fairfax City’s sterilization program across a 407-square-mile county probably isn’t realistic from a cost standpoint.

At the moment, Fairfax County’s deer management program relies mostly on managed hunts at area parks. Last year, bow hunters with the Fairfax County Archery Program harvested 697 deer from 21 park sites.

Given that 40,000 to 50,000 deer currently live in Fairfax or that the county averages 4,000 to 5,000 deer-vehicle collisions per year, new strategies are badly needed to manage a deer population that no longer can be classified as a simple nuisance.

Between car accidents, environmental damage and the growing incidence of Lyme disease in our region, deer are costing Fairfax families money, health and, in many cases, peace of mind.

Local officials would be wise to assess all of those issues without bias of emotion.

Fairfax City officials certainly deserve credit for attacking their deer management challenge with a nonlethal strategy that’s largely funded with private money.

Going forward, we encourage Fairfax County and other jurisdictions across the region to continue exploring effective new options for an age-old problem.

Or we could just not reinvent the wheel and use the age-old solution, which is letting licensed bow hunters harvest them in more populated areas.

Instead the Fairfax City intelligentsia come up with a $1K per deer plan that is LESS HUMANE to the deer population. Good work.

Can anyone link to a story where a bystander was killed or hurt by a bow hunter under the Fairfax County programs? I know we can find plenty of stories about deer/vehicle collisions. Seems like quite a few people would have to be hurt by arrows to be more dangerous overall than letting hunters do what they do and control the deer population.

Please, don't let facts get in the way of lib anti-hunting hysteria and fearmongering. Libs prefer deer population control by way of starvation or car accidents.

+1

Advantages of letting deer population grow: " car accidents, environmental damage and the growing incidence of Lyme disease in our region, deer are costing Fairfax families money, health and, in many cases, peace of mind"

Disadvantages of sterlizization program: "Some criticized the program’s cost, while others questioned its effectiveness ... cut the costs in half for a deer sterilization program in Maryland by securing volunteer assistance from local veterinarians. It’s also worth noting that the program will be funded by a grant — not city or taxpayer funds"

We really need to consider how the deer are going to respond to this program.

When the deer begin to realize that we are kidnapping their females and taking their ovaries them deer are gonna be mad.

They are already upset at us for putting up deer crossing signs along major highways. (The deer don't like how humans are encourgaing deer to cross major highways. The deer argue that you don't see no school crossings on 95). http://youtu.be/CI8UPHMzZm8

We need to kill the deer. Sorry PETA. It's the only way to control them. Unless you want people to get sick, cars to get damaged, and parks to get over populated.

Sincerely signed,
Bambi

You're idea is sensible, practical, responsible, intelligent, cost effective and rational. It is the exact opposite of liberal. Good luck getting a group of liberals to think rationally and do something positive for a majority.
Liberals must spend as much money as possible with as little of an impact as possible so that they can feel good about not killing a deer. Fuck humans. Let humans die by having a deer fly through their windshield. Hell, liberals make it legal to exterminate the human species why the fuck would they care if people are killed in an accident involving a deer?

A few counter-points to this argument...

1 - There aren't a whole lot of bow hunters. I am a hunter myself and I hunt every season; bow, muzzleloader, and rifle. Let me tell you, bow hunting is freaking tough. It's a whole lot easier to use a rifle and scope where 100 yard shots are super simple. For bow hunting, the deer have to be closer before you can shoot. Estimating the range incorrectly can have a dramatic impact (shoot under or over the deer). Even the smallest twig can deflect your arrow.

2 - You can put a hunter on every square yard of county park land and still not make a sizable impact in the deer population. The main problem is all the deer that dwell on private property. Until you figure out some way to force private land owners to allow hunting, the deer population isn't going to drop significantly.

So, unless we're willing to enact some form of Eminent Domain related to hunting rights or institute a 'deer management' tax that can be offset by showing proof of successful hunting on your property, the deer population isn't going to be effectively controlled via hunting. Also note that with Virginia being a Dillon Rule state, the chances of either of those happening is 0%.

This anti-hunting crap is almost entirely fueled by women. And its only because deer are "cute".

If the place were full of chickens then nobody would give a shit, because chickens aren't cute. They'd shoot them all and be done with it.

Where are they getting those numbers? I've seen herds out in Loudoun that are in the hundreds, and you just know they migrate over in Fairfax county for food and mating.

Oh for the love of God...

THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT FAIRFAX CITY!

Deer aren't migrating from Loudoun to Fairfax City!

There are plenty of deer in Falls Church, very close to the FFX City line.
I've been behind the Virginian, the assisted living place, in the mornings
and seen at least as many deer hanging out because they put tubs of
corn out for them. You can nearly throw a rock from there and have it
land in FFX City.
Do these people actually think deer don't move around? How about the
woods at the corner of Rt. 50 and Pickett? Is there some sort of
invisible barrier that the deer won't cross or that they only live in
specific neighborhoods? Sounds like somebody has been watching too many Disney movies.

It's illegal to feed deer between Sept 1 and Jan 1...

Too late now, but next year call the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, they'll send a game warden out to set those folks straight.

Deer may move back and forth, but they aren't wide ranging. You're not likely to find deer roaming from Burke Lake Park to the city and back. Well, maybe the bucks, but they don't have ovaries to take out anyways.

Come to think of it I haven't seen them feed at that time of year. My mother in law was there for a while but it was in the summer.

You're right they're not that wide ranging but from the Virginian to Pickett Road we're only talking about a few hundred yards. I've seen plenty of deer right here in Cobbdale too.

Ah, okay, that's legal then. It's only illegal to feed year-round in CWD concern areas. Those are all west of the Blue Ridge.

Well, if they wander into Fairfax City and are caught, they're going to lose their ovaries.

Yes at this juncture it is best to use a crossbow. High velocity with great accuracy guarantees a success.

Points taken but the comparison is being made to the rip-out-the-ovaries idea. Bow hunters are clearly going to thin the deer population more than the ovaries plan. I'm assuming the knockout dart people can't grab doe off private property either.

I'm guessing a Fairfax City official with some printouts of deer collision scenes with him can knock on City landowners' doors who own a lot of woodland and ask permission to include their property in a bowhunting program, getting some positive results. But they can't get that message out while the homeowner is laughing at the $1K apiece surgery method.

Again same limitations for getting a deer off property with a dart gun to perform surgery on it.

My friend has had nine deer legally killed with bow on his land right in the middle of Vienna this season. He has 2 acres near the intersection of Vale and Hunter Mill with houses less than 100 yards in each direction. Apparently it's legal as long as the deer is killed from a tree stand so that the arrow is released at a downward angle. The guys he has allowed are seasoned hunters, but it stilled amazed me to find out it is perfectly legal. Nine deer in one yard in a couple months! The county should pay homeowners for doing this. He has probably saved a couple cars from being destroyed by deer at the very least.

Deer is hanging out with their family while your getting your weed thus feeding the american demand for drugs that cause violence in the places your weed comes from. Really I think the county should leave the deer alone and instead hunt down every idiot from fairfax. If only.......

I remember but I killed Bambi in Front Royal many years
ago. He was a tough one but I took the tenderloins and
gave the rest to Hunters for the Hungry. His hide made
some nice gloves for my wife. RIP Bambi.

Release tigers throughout the county - they would enjoy the deer.

All forms of deer management should be humane

All forms of deer management should be humane
http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20140110/OPINION/140119857/1065/all-forms-of-deer-management-should-be-humane&template=fairfaxTimes

Two other aspects to deer management that need to be considered are safety to the surrounding neighborhood and humane culling of the deer.

Currently, police sharpshooters are culling deer with .308 ammo that can travel up to 3.5 miles. In Frederick, Md. in November, a hunter using a .30-30 (less powerful than a .308) shot a deer. The bullet traveled through the deer killing it, through an aluminum siding wall, and hit a 4-year-old boy. The boy survived. Professional wildlife experts will use a fragmented .223 rather than the SWAT ammo that is being used by police in Fairfax County. These bullets stop when they hit the deer, so there is no danger to the neighborhood. A culling is planned for Frying Pan Park during late January and February and there seems to be low concern for neighborhood safety with the magnitude of ammo planned for use.

Also, who can forget the deer widely disseminated on the internet wandering around with an arrow through his head? This is all too common as archers without proper expertise discharge arrows in daylight without required certification of their skill at hunting. While the deer population is over-abundant, humane killing would seem to be preferred.

I applaud Fairfax city for having an open mind and considering the safety of the residents in this novel approach to nonlethal deer management.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Think they would be willing to remove Gerry Connolly's ovaries while they're at it?

Editorial. Gwyn must be a vegetarian, because cows, chickens ... never mind. Some people are just ignorant.

Most hunters would use a 12 gauge shot gun with BUCK shot. But if we are going to write fictitious articles, my personal choice would be the M107, which can travel coast to coast.

Here is a dead giveaway that you have no clue as to what you're talking about.
"required certification of their skill level at hunting"
You're obviously not familiar with hunting or hunting laws. I suggest you do
some homework before posting such imaginary bullshit.

Yes there are other people as stupid as those in Fairfax Cit that want to sterilize deer!

NY Town spends $2,984 per deer in sterilization program...any guesses where? Hint a ultra liberal college town on the south end of Cayuga Lake....but it feels good!
