Winner Announced In 2nd FU DWI Lottery!
Posted by: Radiophile ()
Date: December 19, 2008 08:06AM

Since tonight there will be at least one are DWI checkpoint at the Sully district, I figured time for another DWI checkpoint lottery. Here are the rules. Please predict

Number of people stopped
Number of DWI/DUI
Number of other MISC charges - everything from seat belt violations to outstanding warrants

Whoever is closest to the actual results without going over on any one of the three categories wins.

In case of no one winning, we will add the total number of all three categories and whoever is closest without going over, wins!

Cases of multiple checkpoints then we will have multipple winners.

Gravis - will you hold the money?

Ok, here's my entry:

Number of people stopped: 618

Number of DWI/DUU: 2

Number of other MISC charges - everything from seat belt violations to outstanding warrants: 8

Also, I think Cary used to have a paypal account for FU a long time ago, maybe we could just wager our money thru that and he could payoff the winners, lol

I do not think those numbers will be in the official press release, so we would have to rely on Westfields for the numbers. So accuracy could not be verified.

(I'm being generous with 1 DWI, since most of the time they inconvenience several hundred drivers and net a few suspended licenses and maybe a rejection sticker or two at best.)

In the press release I catch, though admittedly not every one, rarely do I see them making more than one or two DWI arrests. Sometimes it is zero.

I am seeing some very high numbers in the DWI/DUI category..... This could be interesting.

Exactly. I read the sun gazette most weeks and I've noticed that on the few times they've posted checkpoint results in the crime reports, it is like none or 1 or perhaps 2. I think the most I've ever seen is 4.

I remember one checkpoint over new years, either last year or the year before on Rt 7 in Tysons that stopped something like 700 people, zero dui, maybe 2 misc traffic and 1 other criminal offense, or numbers similar. That was when I realized how much of a waste of resources it is, as well as a major inconvenience for law abiding citizens. I think they average about 8 or 9 police officers and sometimes an ambulance crew on these checkpoints. So that new year's stop cost at least 32 man hours to hand out a couple traffic citations. Really good ROI, if you ask me.

Add in gasoline and other expenses, and that is probably at least $5k spent, to probably net around $1,000 in fines. I wonder what it costs the 500+ people who lose 5 to 15 minutes each of their time, and gas wasted while needlessly idling.

The Fairfax County Police Department will issue a press release, probably Monday Morning.

I thing we should stop taking entries 2 hours before the press release is issued. The press release will have a date and time issued stated clearly at the top.

You will be able to find the press release here

Do we have a winner Radiophile?

Approximately 800 motorists passed through the checkpoint at Route 50 and Pleasant Valley Road. One arrest was made for DWI. Seven traffic summonses were issued; four for driving with no operator’s license and three for driving with suspended operator’s licenses. Additionally, one misdemeanor criminal charge was placed.

I of course claim victory, along with the others that guessed one or zero DWI arrests at the DWI checkpoint.

Actual results 800/1/8 for stopped, DWI, and MISC respectively.

Bob picked 432/1/5
No Whammy picked 375/1/7

While Pgens said zero or one DWI you did not play the game so I cant count you as the winner.

Bob and No Whammy tied, getting one category exactly right and not going over on the other two. In case of a tie we add the total numbers of all the categories and see who is closer.

Winning number - 809
Bob - 438
No Whammy - 383

Since Bob is closer, without going over - Bob is the winner!

Let me say "congratulations Bob"! To everyone else - keep playing you could be a winner too.

See you next time!

Cool. (But, No Whammy was closer on the misc tickets/arrests.)

Damn, 800 people stopped, and only one DUI ... at a DUI CHECKPOINT!! Isn't it time they reassess this tactic?

The Police department issues a press release a day or two before the suprprise checkpoint. They sont tell you where exactly it will be.

The press release for Saturdays was released last Wednesday and said

The Fairfax County Police Department, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are dedicating a multi-agency sobriety checkpoint held in memory of a woman who lost her life last year when she was struck and killed by a drunk driver. The checkpoint will take place in the Sully Police District on Friday, December 19 from 11:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

the point of these stops are NOT to find drunks, it's a PR gig. have you noticed they hand out fliers to people when they go through and give you a little speech?

Then they should stop calling them "DUI Checkpoints" and call them what they really are, "DUI Awareness Roadblocks" -- I bet more people would be against them if they called them something more accurate.

They have to keep up the facade of stopping drunk drivers, I guess.

Maybe we could set up a mobile alert - someone would see a roadblock and magically be able to message all at FXU to avoid that area like the plague.

Heroine with an "e" at the end refers to woman admired and emulated for her achievements or the principal female character in a literary or dramatic work. Without the "e" it refers to the narcotic drug. The level of illiteracy on this site is shocking
