McCormick Weighing Move to Northern Virginia?
Spice company is looking to move its headquarters and a handful of states are on the menu, according to a Business Journal report.

Does Northern Virginia have the right flavor for McCormick & Co.? The spice company is looking to relocate its Maryland headquarters by April 2018 and Virginia is a consideration, according to a Washington Business Journal report.

The paper notes the maker of Old Bay Seasoning also is considering large sites in Maryland, Delaware and southern Pennsylvania.

The company currently employs between 600 and 700 workers in Baltimore County, the Journal reports.

McCormick was founded in Baltimore in 1889, and sold root beer extract door-to-door from a horse-drawn carriage, according to a May release.

"Today, McCormick has a leading share of the estimated $10 billion global market for packaged spices and seasonings, with many consumer brands holding a leading position in markets around the world," the release notes.

And The Motley Fool website had kind things to say earlier this week regarding McCormick's investment potential.

"One of the more interesting aspects of this company stems from the high degree of inside ownership--McCormick's employee 401k plan owns 20 percent of the company," wrote William Bias.

Interesting that McCormick would consider moving after all of these years.

Must be issues within MD with taxation and benefits?? Healthcare costs?

Maybe it also has to do with attracting employess due to the local school systems and neighborhoods??

Tysons Corner would be a likely location unless McCormick needs warehousing/

If it was due to taxes, etc, then why would they be considering other sites in Maryland?

My guess is they were offered gazillions for their current property.

Plus I believe it is a factory operation, so if they move to VA, it won't be anywhere around NOVA.

That's a piss-poor article I guess just to draw headline interest. Which I supposed that it did.

The primary reason is to expand current space and consolidate 600 -700 employees that are scattered across various current locations. These are HQ operations not factory. They have some 10,000 employees total with plant operations elsewhere. Stated preference is to stay and build on the same property but they are open to looking at other options.

From a better article:

"The possible move would involve four McCormick locations — the 87,000-square-foot corporate headquarters at 18 Loveton Circle in Sparks; the 126,000-square-foot divisional headquarters for its U.S. consumer business at 211 Schilling Circle in Hunt Valley; the 81,750-square-foot divisional headquarters for its U.S. industrial business at 226 Schilling Circle and 13,000 square feet at an employee wellness center at 215 Schilling Circle.

Moving those employees into a single location would promote better “synergy,” Wilson said. McCormick owns two of the locations, but rents its space at 226 Schilling Circle and 215 Schilling Circle."

But when I did the same thing for FCPS, it was an outrage.

Go figure.
