Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I just moved to Fairfax county from Arizona. My AZ family is all visiting next week and they think the east coast is going to be all snow. How far west do I have to go to hit snow and find a good place to sled? Any suggestions?

It's doubtful there will be any snow around here by next week. Tell those yokels to go back to their painted desert.
The best place to sled in the local area is Mt. Reston in Reston, VA. Its off of weile drive past sunset hills before you hit baron cameron rd. Its at the Unitarian Church that is there. however, as a born and raised local to this area, I can tell you that there won't snow anywhere near here for a while. You'd have to go out to Winchester for sledding or one of the ski resorts for such things.
Just go to an area ski resort and go tubing. That's pretty inexpensive and only a 1-2 hour drive. You could drive to West Virginia about 2 hours away and I'm sure you'll find some snow just over the mountains.
If there is sufficient snow, (which there rarely is around here)
Van Dyk Park in FFx City was good for my kids sometimes.
Other than that, the GW Forest has some great places that are
free. So does the Shenandoah. Its free there too. Small towns
around and some very nice restaurants.

Be sure to wear your bolo ties, cowboy hats and Tony Lamas while in the Shenandoah. That should go over well with the locals.

Whitetail (www.skiwhitetail.com) and Liberty (www.skiliberty.com) are both under 2 hours from Fairfax and have snow tubing. It isn't cheap, but it can be fun. FWIW, I think that the drive to Liberty is a bit nicer.

Make sure you yell out, "I want to ski some blacks." That should go over well.
Suicide Hill, in Alexandria (Martha Custis Dr. & Preston Rd). Shorter, but very steep. Plus, the risk of slamming in to the condo buildings at the bottom. Scary, but very thrilling.
However, as mentioned earlier in this thread, the Washington DC area doesn't get snow any more.

LC rocks! I used to sled that hill as a wee lad in the 80's LOL.
It's further out, but there is a hugeeee hill comparable but longer to LC in Manassas, off of Ashton Ave by the Shoppers in Bull Run plaza. That place gets PACKED when it snows, and its also entertaining. It's the only place I have ever seen so many hispanics with makeshift sleds (trash bags, trash can lids, I even saw a LAUNDRY BASKET one year). Fun stuff.

I was going to propse the hill at the Masonic Temple in Alexandria. Just be sure to stop before you become Road Pizza on King Street.,
The hill at Washington Irving Middle School (Old Keene Mill Rd. in West Springfield) is always good, but probably only today/ tonight before the snow washed away.
everytown seems to have a place called suicide hill
ours was this big ass hill right alongside dulles toll road behind the hutchison soccer fields in herndon.
if you hit the jump at the bottom just right, you would launch onto the toll road itself
also, in sterling, there is a church on N-Hill overlooking the costco. sled down that and if you hit that one just right it will launch directly into the side of the building.
blarg, the first hill you mentioned was always 'the" suicide hill around here when I was growing up. I went a few times and saw some entertaining.. mistakes. Didn't have the balls myself.
lots of these spots are good, but there's a perfect spot in vienna that no one's mentioned - and so i guess i won't give it up, either. it's legendary, though, and it's worth trying to find, so in the spirit of sledding comraderie and fun good times, i'll say that it's in vienna somewhere between route 7 and the dulles toll road. it's a park, but different from the rest. go find it and then keep it a secret, too!

I can vouch for Mt. Reston. If you got up enough speed you could jump the creekbed at the bottom...
Moving from MA to VA, I miss the constant weekends of sledding.
There are not a lot of great hills around here. I like the hill at the battlefield in Manassas near the 234/29 junction at the old stone house. But lousy parking and do not park on the street. When I was there, they were charging for parking and if you park wrong, you will get towed.
For smaller kids, Neabsco Elementary in Dale City has a smaller hill (though my 11 year old enjoys it) that is long that borders the parking lot. Not a bad way to kill some time on a snow day.
Bel Air Elementary has a decent hill in front of the school but it will go into the street so be careful!
I am not sure if the hill at the steps behind Dale City Rec Center is open for sledding. That hill is GREAT but have not tried sledding it as I am not sure if they would allow it. If anyone knows, please post!

how could you bring up neabsco and bel-air without mentioning godwin middle school, down darbydale ave?
I'd like to find the Mount Reston spot tomorrow. Where do you park to get to the hill? I think I found where it might be (behind the Children's House Montessori school?). Any helpful tips?
I'm reviving this thread on 2 Dec 2011. I realize there hasn't been much cold weather so far. I live in Arlington -- anyone have an idea where the closest snow (and hill) would be that is sufficient for sledding? Doesn't need to be a resort as my kids are 2 and 3, so even a small hill would be great. Thanks

Pinecrest golf course is a golfing facility and sledding is prohibited. Anyone sledding is trespassing not to mention sledding creates a tremendous negative impact on the grass. Those “caught” on the course without permission can be ticketed by Fairfax County Police.
This thread may be over 5 years old, but it still steered me in the right direction! Had a lot of fun at Lees Corner Elementary in Chantilly last week. There's a nice hill between the field and the road and a steeper one right behind the school, which was the most popular. If the conditions were right you might wind up in the road, a stream, the woods or going over a footbridge (which was my goal), but the hills taper off at the bottom so it would be easy to bail if you had to. I think the length of the hills is perfect. Long enough to get up some good speed, but not so long that the walk back up the hill isn't too much.

Dude, is been fucked since the early eighties when it got developed. Don't know that the prez ever made it out there... That said, remember a dude getting severely injured on a toboggan (I think) there late seventies early eighties? Bunch of folks got jacked up sledding there back in the day...
Pinecrest in the late 70's was the best sledding hill in Nova. We had bonfires and burned busted sleds. I remember a car hood and giant truck innertubes making it to Old Columbia Pike.
