I heard Kate's lost their lease and is closing. What a shame It was clearly a bit of a dive but I hate to lose any watering holes in the area. They had some good people working there. I will miss them.

Kate's has been a staple in Springfield for years. What's not needed in the neighborhood is the lousy disrespectful Hispanics and the disgusting Commerce St apts.

I wonder why Kate's would lose their lease? That same center has the long-vacant Fischer's Hardware and Boater's World stores.

I remember when it was Generous George's. There was one in Annandale and Alexandria on Duke St. too. They were at least different.

There's still a Generous George's...of course it's way the fuck out in Herndon in a professional park and you'll never find it but, it's there.

Generous George: In another discussion here a couple of years ago, I think someone said George (last name Mansy?) had suffered a stroke, wasn't doing well, and was no longer living in the area. I liked the Duke Street / Alexandria location and used to see him in there from time to time. Thought the place really did have a weird but positive vibe, which was what George was going for. Sad to drive by and see the sign and the pink building that's still there but vacant.

Ok I'll bite. Long before the vikings there were the Picts in Scotland and the Gaels in Ireland. The Gaels migrated to Scotland and interbred with the Picts and became the Scots. Actually the Norse ended up in Scotland, Ireland, England, and just about everywhere else. Arguably there were more vikings in the lowlands. But basically the Scottish people share a lot of common ancestry with the Irish.

In the overall order, long before the Vikings/Danes, A few Britons were thrown in to the mix, then the Romans came, then the Angles, then the vikings, then the Normans.

By the way the kilts worn today are a relatively modern invention. They really only became popular in the 17th and 18th century.

I drove by there yesterday and there is a Greek restaurant there now, where Kate's was. Seems a lot of construction was going on in the shopping center. Eleni's Greek Taverna is what is there now.
