where are the closest backwoods areas to FFX county, or are there any left in the southern or western portions of the county?

The FFX Cross County Trail has areas that are still heavily wooded, some admittedly are adjacent to neighborhoods.

Areas along the Potomac River in the local parks; Also across the river in Maryland along the C&O Canal towpath, goes all the way to Cumberland, MD. Passes through some wilderness areas and national forestlands here and there.

there are some remote areas in Hemlock Overlook/Bull Run/Fountainhead parks but you can't get too terribly lost. short of driving a couple counties west, try some of the lesser traveled sections of Mason Neck State Park or Prince William Forest.

Patuxent Research Refuge

1/2 way between baltimore and dc. couple miles from bowie state university and the bowie marc train station.

Also, Prince William Forest Park adjacent to Quantico.

Also Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge just south of Lorton

Absolutely nothing beats The George Washington National Forest.

The area is often refereed to as the Switzerland of the US.
