Under Fairfax plan, vets will remove deer ovaries

FAIRFAX, Va. - Fairfax City wants to become the first community in Virginia to use surgical sterilization to control its deer population.

All that's needed to go forward with the experiment is final approval from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and approval looks likely.

The man who will lead it, wildlife biologist Dr. Anthony DeNicola, has run similar programs in other parts of the country.

He estimates the City of Fairfax has between 50 to 75 deer within its 6 square miles, fewer than he initially expected.

Under the five-year program, the female deer will undergo surgery to remove their ovaries, with a goal of having all the does sterilized by the second year.

"The reason we target females in deer is they're a polygamous species. Meaning one male will copulate or breed with multiple females," DeNicola told city councilmembers this week.

He said the city's density will actually help researchers get their job done.

"Your deer are used to seeing cars. You probably pull in your driveway, you see them, they ignore you. We take advantage of that."

"When we come along ... usually escorted by an (police) officer, they can't differentiate our presence from anyone else's or obviously our intention."

DeNicola said when conducting sterilization programs in other cities, they've typically stayed on public roads and in parks.

"We'll only engage deer if we see them on a front lawn, in a park area, some type of road frontage area," he said.

Does will be shot with tranquilizer darts, carefully transported to a central location for surgery and given numbered ear tags before being released.

Some does will be fitted with something else.

"We'll have 20 individuals that will have individual radio collars that are trackable."

Nicola said in the past, he's used six different trusted veterinarians to conduct the procedures.

"We feel comfortable that the animals are treated humanely, and that we can do this in a reasonably efficient manner."

DeNicola said typically the cost of the sterilization program is about $1,000 per deer, but that can drop to $500 per deer if volunteer veterinarians are used.

In Fairfax City's case, grant money will cover many of the costs.

DeNicola said this is a good time of year to start the program and pending final approval, it will launch within weeks.

This sounds like a great deal of wasted time and energy. Having a police officer with these folks while they tranquilize them is a complete waste of time. I think this guy sold the city leaders a deer in a poke. A deer population of this size in the city does not need this. Doesn't the city have other issues that need to be looked at. Most people who claim to have some kind of moral objection to hunting are completely full of shit.

Instead of removing the ovaries, remove the head! Why not a controlled hunt and send the meat to feed the homeless or whatever feeds a bleeding liberal. CURRENTLY, THE HERDS ARE TO LARGE. I guess we'll have to spend millions on the Great Fence to keep the
deer contained in Fairfax City and keep the others out. We will also have to
put up signs for the deer along Pickett to inform Falls Church does not to
cross over. Ever see how many deer are in the woods over there and behind
the Virginian? Hundreds maybe?....

I don't think the Fairfax City deer will stay in one place besides 50-75 is a ridiculous number. At least three times that if not more. $1,000 a deer, I mean come on now.

There appears to be the idea that once hit with a tranquilizer dart the deer will drop immediately in place. Doesnt happen, they will have to give chase and I hope the cops are in good shape for running after those deer.

Looking at their website, it appears that they offer a variety of deer management options, including culls. The city council voted on it, but it came out as 3/3, so it didn't pass.

I Googled White Buffalo Inc + lawsuit and see what you mean.
They must have quite a team of attorneys considering the amount
of time they're spending in court. Next thing you know Silverthorne
et al will be hiring the Obamacare.gov contractors to do IT work
for the city.

I'm hoping that the massive deer population will bring about a larger amount of mountain lions. I can just picture them running down deer in the national parks here in the county and eating them. Those poor liberals won't know what to do.

They are almost tame. They come onto my back patio to eat my plants and get within 10 - 15 feet of me standing in front of them. I could easily take one out with a good-sized rock.

I think ffx county would be better off if most people on this forum were sterilized. Well most people in ffx in general too many snobby, racist, low intelligent type. Any idiot knows that IF this happens to the deer it will only OK other inhumane treatment to these animals. Its not fair to them that their homes or forests are torn down to make more mcmansions or more ritzy hotels that will overcharge you. Capitalism at best. Fairfax City pursues deer sterilization program

Officials in the City of Fairfax have signed off on a non-lethal approach to managing the city’s deer population.

The city will support a grant-funded research program that uses surgical sterilization of female deer as a mechanism for controlling deer population.

Last year, the Fairfax City Council determined that it did not want to allow hunting within city limits. Surrounding Fairfax County uses managed hunts as its main method of deer population control.

Dr. Anthony DiNicola, of White Buffalo, Inc., will coordinate the program. He estimates that the city’s deer population is between 50 to 75 deer per square mile, which is lower than areas considered to have a deer crisis.

By comparison, some of Fairfax County’s large parks were estimated to have population densities of more than 200 deer per square mile before the county started its deer management program.

Most jurisdictions wait until the populations reach a crisis point before trying to thin the herds, DiNicola said. He is interested to see the effects of a more proactive approach.

“I can’t guarantee that deer are going to become a problem here,” DiNicola told the City Council last week. “But you have the right formula … it’s coming.”

While it might not be a crisis, Councilman David Meyer said deer are a big problem in his neighborhood. “The impact to our little area is significant,” he said.

Using this method is a slower approach to population control, DiNicola said, because the population isn’t reduced until deer die of natural causes or in collisions with vehicles. Some jurisdictions opt to combine sterilization and managed hunts for more effect, he said.

While it hasn’t been used in Virginia, White Buffalo has used this method in Cayuga Heights, N.Y.; San Jose, Calif.; and Phoenix, Md.

Under the program, does are anesthetized using a dart and then transported to a central area where veterinarians will perform surgery to remove their ovaries.

“From start to finish, the animals are on the table for about 11 minutes,” DiNicola said.

The veterinarians take all possible precautions to ensure that the deer remain sufficiently anesthetized during the procedure and that they don’t feel pain afterward, he said,

All of the deer receive an ear tag to mark that they have been captured, and a few will also have radio collars put on so researchers can continue to track their movements.

The procedure costs about $1,000 per deer, according to DiNicola. However, he said, he was able to cut the costs in half for a deer sterilization program in Maryland by securing volunteer assistance from local veterinarians. The program will be funded by a grant and not city funds.

DiNicola said he believes permanent sterilization is more effective than injecting deer with contraceptives because you only have to capture the deer one time. The contraceptives that have been used on deer in select studies nationwide have to be re-applied over time, like a vaccine.

The researchers are waiting for final approval on their plan from the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries before proceeding with sterilization.

Why not declare Fairfax City a Sanctuary City for Sasquatch families and import a bunch of them into the city to take care of all the deer issues? No need for taxpayers to have to pay for free townhouses for them, and they will serve the needs to have much greater diversity in the Fairfax area population. No foodstamps needed, no free education vouchers needed, no social services, and as the deer population in the surrounding areas keeps on moving into Fairfax to replace those eaten by the Sasquatches, Fairfax will then be doing the whole NOVA area a greater service too!!!

Until you have run into a buck chasing a doe in front of you while driving, you might want to reserve comments. I don't know the answer, but I do know that having hooves and antlers coming through your windshield at 40-45 mph isn't the answer. You are also prone to swerve to avoid hitting Bambi and dart into the path of a oncoming car.
