The new noise ordinance for Fairfax county now says if I can hear you dog(or any noise) in my house you can be fined!

So put a muzzle on little noise and shit maker.

Although Fairfax police said they could resolve most noise complaints without a legal summons, the increasing number of complaints made them seek the enforcement tool in advance of the holiday season. The new law defines a noise violation as any sound “that is audible in any other person’s residential dwelling with the doors and windows to the other person’s residential dwelling closed.”

Under the new rules, a first offense would be a Class 3 misdemeanor that could come with a fine of not more than $500.

Residents who live near the Reston dog park said the new law “ignores the impact of noise coming from outside the neighborhood,” said Robert Sawicki. Animal noise in general is not defined, and Betsy McArdle of Springfield said she had a neighbor with a rooster that was up before dawn. She said she now sleeps in her basement, her husband can’t make business calls and her windows have been sealed.

What about all the HS that blare the loudspeakers during games? Those things are cranked up so loud you can hear them over half a mile away. They also never pull a special permit.

Keep in mind, even with the new law, that generally someone has to complain for you to get a visit.

1) Does anyone have a link to the exact language of what was passed?

2) Just going off the article it does seem like people have mentioned above.. mowing a law, blowing leaves, or having a birthday party could all potentially be violating the ordinance and result in a fine .. wtf ?

3) I'd like to see #1 because I am curious how this gets enforced. I assume a person has to be a plaintiff, right? The law pertains to being able to hear a sound inside a home with doors/windows shut. Someone would have to be in a home with the doors/windows shut and be bothered to levy the complaint. Then the police have to show up ... and what? Do they have to go into the home of the complainant and also hear the sound to verify? Do they just take the person's word for it and hand out a fine?

Seems weird on how this would be enforced. Even if cops show up and hear a barking dog.. that doesn't mean it's audible from in a home nearby. This thing is a bit fishy to me on how this would work exactly.

Yes, here it is. It's really astounding that people think they can disturb others with impunity. Hopefully the noise ordinance will be effective.

I'm assuming some degree of common sense applies here. Don't be an asshole to your neighbors and they will presumably return the favor.

If that's true it will never get enforced on a regular basis.

This is latest ploy by code compliance to justify their existence. They will enforce this, and also look for other wonderful violations like burned out lightbulbs on your front porch and grass that's too high.

In my younger years I use to crank up the music all time. I was good friends with all my neighbors and told them to please call if they wanted the music turned down.

I only got one knock on the door from a policeman. That was a trooper who happened to be in the neighborhood who heard the music in his cruiser and decided to tell me it needed to be turned down. He didn't write me a ticket just politely asked me to turn it down.

As second place I lived I intentional cranked my music as loud as it could go at about 3am over parking spot dispute. Two cruisers showed up. Pretty much the same deal. I explained the situation. I was given a warning told that if they ever returned on noise complaint they would then write me a summons. I thought that was more than fair and agreed I was being an idiot at 3am in morning.

FYI- After my drunken state wore the next day I apologized to them and this started a good relationship with them.

Fairfax county ordinance restricts "non-relatives" in a dwelling to four.
