The federal government late Monday announced unscheduled leave for employees in the Washington region as a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain heads our way.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for most of Northern Virginia ahead of a coastal storm expected to bring snow, sleet and freezing rain early Tuesday morning.
The advisory goes into effect at 4 a.m. Tuesday and continues to 1 p.m. for all counties west of Interstate 95, including Prince William, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Arlington, Stafford and Spotsylvania.
Forecasters say precipitation will start with a brief period of snow and sleet, changing to freezing rain by mid-morning Tuesday and lasting through the early afternoon.
In the western suburbs, up to an inch of snow and ice are possible. The freezing precipitation is then expected to turn to heavy rain, with two to four inches possible through the day.
Precipitation is expected to start between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.
The weather service said road conditions will be slippery and visibilities could be low early Tuesday morning.
The federal government says employees have the option of unscheduled leave or telework Tuesday. No school system had announced any closures or delays Monday night.
The Virginia Department of Transportation on Monday was treating roads with salt and sand ahead of the storm.
