Law on radar detectors...

Ok so if i buy a radar detector and get pulled over for havin one, but not because i was speeding, how much is it?

i thought i heard that its alot better to not be speeding and get caught with a radar then to get caught speeding.

Also, isnt this really easy to do? once it beeps at u, turn it off, go normal speed for awhile, then turn it back on?

is it that easy?

I don't speed but I have a detector I like to hook up when out of Virginia. Not because I speed and want to get caught, but because it is a cool gizmo to hook up. Can anyone recommend a Velentine One model? My old cobra is well, old.

Whatever is currently being sold by Valentine is in theory the best out there right now. Although there are older versions that are just as good for what cops on the street are using.

Dude...get one, well worth the investment.

The penalty for RD use is $35 + court cost = $80 max

Speeding ticket = $100 + 3-5 pts and hundreds of dollars in insurance increases.

I've been sportin' the Valentine 1 since 2000, if it goes off, I just slow down, proceed to the right lane and do the speed limit, if the trooper pulls out, I take it down from the windshield and throw it in the glove box.

I've been "busted" before by the Spectre Radar Detector Detector that a State trooper had (saw it attached to his dash in my rear view) I simply didn't give him consent to search the glovebox and he threw a minor hissy fit but had no choice but to let me go...no ticket...nada! ROLF

I pulled back on 66 and got on 495, turned it back on, put it back on the dash and continued driving.

Valentine 1 FTW!

There is Virginia case law on the books which states that he didn't need your consent to search for that radar detector. You should be glad that the trooper wasn't familiar with the case law. A radar detector is an awfully small item. Just think of all of the other things a law enforcement officer could find while looking for that detector. With any luck, one day you'll run into the right officer and he'll seize your detector and write you a few tickets you so richly deserve.

Ah... unlike the other 49 states that don't outlaw them.

And if he happened to get his glove compartment locked and key back into the ignition by the officer got to the door... "A person shall not be guilty of a violation of this Section when the device or mechanism in question, at the time of the alleged offense, had no power source and was not readily accessible for use by the driver or any passenger in the vehicle."

Of course, if the officer sees him making furtive gestures and movements while attempting to cram the radar detector into his glove box while being stopped the officer can look anyway.

What a sensible reply. Maybe try again with something a little more realistic given current events in the county:

"Of course, the officer can just pull his gun if he's in Fairfax County, accidentally pull the trigger, mutter under his breath 'I'll betcha he gambled too,' and rest assured Robert F. Horan Jr. won't even send the incident to a grand jury."

Warm regards Jim.

pgens,
im suprisedt they havent just started shooting at cars when they start to pull them over. maybe they are just going to start running cars off the road. "anything could happen," so why risk injury when you can kill an extremely violent criminal terrorist on a killing spree. oh yes, they are all terrorists. shoot on sight.

I don't think it has gotten to that point and hope it never will... my hope is that the problem lies in training, which can be fixed. And some policy changes to affect decision making. Both the IHOP death and gambler death were caused by someone making the decision to escalate force where it wasn't necessary.

but by not prosecuting the police officers, the state is inherently saying that the police did not do anything wrong. people now will begin to accept this as ok to do

I don't think people are getting a real chance to accept it. The stories are too buried in the papers.

Looks like I struck a nerve and the despots has crawled out from hiding to reply rolf.

Valentine ONE, 6 years and counting junior!

"A fool and his license are soon parted" - Fat chance!

"With any luck, one day you'll run into
the right officer and he'll seize your detector" - This section shall not be construed to authorize the forfeiture to the Commonwealth of any such device or mechanism. - Reading is fundemental...Mr. "Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney" junior! ROLF

i laughed too. im a bit concerned that i may be shot for doing so... you know, a cop might "accidently discharge" a gun in my face by accident. clearly my maniacal laughter means i have a high potential of being a terrorist. no problem with that, right jimbo? super.

cops cant sieze the detector, they are held as evidence and then released after the court date and chance to appeal the case has expired. So if he takes the detector you will be able to get if back after a few months

Valentine one for 20 years. What an incredible device.

The whole Virginia law is absurd. How can it be illegal to receive a freely broadcast radio signal that is openly aimed at the public? 49 states realize this. Would be nice for someone in Va to challenge this law.

While the Valentine 1 is a great detector, the escort redline makes more sense in VA as it is undetectable. It beats the V1s range and has better filters, the V1 is better at detecting instant on. The best option is the beltronics stir+

I've wondered that myself.

Yes, I realize it's a different country, but note that in the U.K. you need a license to watch TV (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licensing_in_the_United_Kingdom). There might be some interesting (though obviously not probative) case law there.

Why don't you file suit?

The VA law is covered by a little know FCC rule that allows the public to only listen to broadcast stations and ham radio operators. Disclosing any other radio transmissions without the FCC licensee's permission is subject to civil prosecution.

That's why Radar is government's most profitable electronic invention
