Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Improving Fairfax Underground
Posted by: Rafael Bloomberg ()
Date: October 31, 2013 03:31PM

I found this site a few weeks ago after having lived in Northern Virginia most of my life. I think it's interesting, informative, entertaining, and helps maintain a sense of community - something that I haven't really felt in Northern Virginia as a whole.

While many posters here consistently write informative, non-offensive, educative material (and I applaud them for it), it seems that almost just as many do the opposite. I love a healthy debate and think it's great to see it on here but name-calling, shutting other people down, making fun of people for their comments is not debate. It's making this site look bad, and more importantly, it's making our community look bad.

I call on everyone to improve our communication ground by posting more respectfully and intelligently. Think about what you want to say and make sure you're on topic. Before you hit 'Post message', make sure your post is relevant to the topic at hand, non-offensive is of some value to others or at least interesting in some way. Post something that you would actually say in person to someone that thinks highly of you, or someone that you think highly of.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's wrong to be opinionated or feel strongly about an issue, but there's nothing to be gained by posting offensive comments just because you disagree with someone.

Cheers, here's to a better Fairfax forum.

I care more about how this site "looks" than the shitfest that is Fairfax County. They "look" bad without any effort from this site.

Why is everyone name Bloomberg always trying to control people? Are you a Nazi?

OP would no doubt appoint herself to serve as the free speech coordinator here, deciding what may or may not be said. Another typical lib (or religious right) dictator-wannabe to enforce political correctness. Fuck off.

While I appreciate your concerns and desire for decorum, people gravitate to this site precisely because it is a free for all. And you haven't seen the worst of it. Political debate has dominated the board lately, and Eesh (our resident pervert) has been largely missing. It can get really ugly around here.

I'd appreciate a calm voice of reason around here, but you might find Citi-Data more to your liking.

@Gramps & Get out... - Thanks, you've made excellent examples of yourselves.

@gerry3 - Fairfax isn't that bad, are there any parts in particular that are a "shitfest" to you?

@Free Speech - I'm all for free speech, I cherish the First Amendment. However, bad speech should be discouraged, and if it isn't we as a society will continue to degenerate.

@ynotregister - Right, then my name will be linked to how many posts I've put up. How will that make my posting any different? I may end up doing that, but being registered or not shouldn't make me any different. That's why there's the option.

While I agree that there is a lot of racism on here, a lot of it that I have seen are meant to be jokes. Hell, half of it could be the same poster using a million names. For as long as I've lived in Fairfax, most people I've met are hard-working decent people. Don't write us all off just yet.

Can the Phorum server software be configured to have the "Started by" column work like the "Last post" column?

If you could see the first posting date as well as the first poster name it would help folks to ignore or not make current comments on an ancient thread. It would also help to expose those who bump up old threads (like thisnone) or try to push stuff off the first page.

OP... This is a nice suggestion... particularly on Helloween.. I agree with you, there are so many racists, bigots, sexists, but more than anything else this forum exists to disgust. Every fucking time I meet someone on the street I'm always reminded of the thinly veiled, vile, vulgar citizens from here. You're all nasty.

Let's say the changes you propose are lauded in favor, things change; guess what, you and I will be the only two people left on FFUG.
