What's up with Lifetime Fitness

The centreville location has a lot less people in it now. Before the summer the parking lot was pretty full at 4:30/5pm. Now it's maybe half full and quite a few of the personal trainers are gone as well.

Maybe the high rates and continuing increases finally made people quit.

Or perhaps a lot of the folks that went there were PWC commuters that aren't going in to work now because of the shutdown.

It was like this well before the shutdown. Really noticed it in early august.

They had to pay for the new carpeting, shower tiles, desks, disposable razors, and shaving cream somehow!!! None of which was needed.

When they upgraded they took out a lot of machines and only replaced a few. The gym is not that inviting anymore when you have to wait for the equipment b/c there is not ample equipment. They took all the "precor" pieces out. Look on the wall by the Smith machine facing the pool.....looks like mold is growing on the wall paper.

Noticed that. Looks like they made room for a lot of the Olympic lifting, new fangled crossfit bullshit that the trainers make people use, provided that the trainers have watched the latest P90X videos.

They should provide deodorant instead of razors and shaving cream - there are some stinky mofos that work out there. Makes cardio unbearable when one of stinky dudes gets on a machine next to you.

In the email discussing the new higher rates, they should include a PSA about personal hygiene...pffff

I've noticed that attendance has been down also. Has anyone sucessfully negotiated lowering their monthly dues? This place smells like shit and is not kept clean but it is convienent to me. Theres also a bunch of fags working there that blatently stare at you changing in the locker room. I wish I could go elsewhere but my options are limited. My dues are going up to $85 a month.

X Sport took a lot of people from Lifetime,Golds, and Sport & Health..But XSport is insanely crowded, if you go in the evening or on weekends you gotta wait for everything. Poor designed, no need for the "spa" services area that takes up a 3rd of the building and is always empty.

And Lifetime counterpunches with new carpeting, less machines, and raising rates at twice the normal rate. Great move, dipshits. Their only advantage is being open 24 hrs a day.

Unfortunately all the upgrades come from HQ. The showers do smell like someone took a shit in them. Heaven forbid you need to ask a trainer a question b/c they all are hiding in the offices unless they have a client. If you noticed Centreville is now an ONYX gym. Since joining LT it has run the gamut from sliver, gold, platinum and now Onyx. I guess when you take machines away machines and don't replace them and put in new granite counter tops on the sign in area you can charge more money.

What's the difference in being an onyx club? Nothing's changed from a functionality standpoint. They didn't add anything significant.

I think it has to do with them opening that really nice club in Herndon. If they keep rates the same all the people from the current clubs will be able to go there for a lower price.

Their newest club is in Reston. You have to pay even more to belong to that location, and cannot go there if you are a member of the other LTF locations. Kinda BS - but I guess they're trying to keep the riff-raff out of there.

Speaking of riff-raff - there is no way that all the people that go to LTF in Centreville are paying the high membership dues. There must be some people that get hooked, or maybe the gov't even subsidises gym memberships these days.

And seriously, how do the wet wipe dispensers around the gym ever go empty? With the exorbitant dues, and a million staff members, those things should NEVER be empty.

It's just a way to charge higher fees by making it sound fancier. From Washington Business Journal: "Life Time Athletic is the higher-end of the company's two brands, kind of like The Ritz-Carlton is to a regular hotel." If you look at their listing of facilities, about 2 dozen or so have this distinction.

BTW - the new Reston location is NOT 24/7. According to their site, they're open 4a-midnight.

Funny I stumble on this thread. I was wondering why my fees were going up and figured the new name was the excuse. Honestly, they've added nothing to the Centreville club of any substance. They've taken out quite a few of the weight machines to make room for a bunch of deadlifting/squat racks. They've added shaving cream and disposable razors in the men's room (along with some new hanging lights) and the desks and front layout are newer. Big deal. I wouldn't mind paying more if they added something of value. Anyone can take a Pinto and spray paint Cadillac on it, but it doesn't improve it or increase its value.

The only good thing is that the place has been at about 50% load for the better part of 6 months, so you don't have to wait for anything. People probably GTFO for cheaper gyms.

This is exactly why I belong to Xport Fitness. Open 24/7, great trainers, pool/sauna/steam room in locker room, probably the highest number of TV's per square foot in any building in the DC area, clean, and plenty of machines. Yes, $40 a month is a good chunk of change, but it's worth it for what you get access to.

For a fitness club, yes I do. Especially when you can do 75% or more of the things in the club at/ around your home. And plus, you pay $180 or something like that up-front for the sign up fee, first and last month etc etc etc

Whoever said it was crowded and you have to wait for machines, I don't get. I usually go on weekends (Merrifield) and later at night after work (8-9 PM) and it's less than a third full.

You have to know when you smell like shit right? I mean, how can you not smell that musky BO smell?

And again, there are soo many people/trainers standing around, the facility and machines should be sparkling clean. There should never be an empty wet wipe dispenser, and never be void of towels upstairs.

the need for television all the time is why people are fat. ever notice that when obese people come in to check out a gym the membership consultants always walk them over to the treadmill / tv area first?

YEAH SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DEAL WITH THE BIGGER ISSUE OF WHY YOUR FAT FIRST! If you can't go without tv for an hour to exercise the gym won't help

I go there because my wife likes it, but i think it's a terrible deal. They closed the place for several days recently to do a big "upgrade". The upgrade basically didn't change anything at all, but they saved some money having the place closed for a week. oh yea, they did re-varnish the floors recently, closing the studios, again saving some money. the floors didn't need anything done to them. they do this every couple years.

The group classes are ok, but i think i know more than most of the instructors about fitness. and that's not saying much. The classes really are the only thing about the place that i'd sort of recommend, and they aren't anything special, for the most part. a couple instructors are pretty good, to be fair. Anybody that goes to the place just for the treadmill and weights is nuts. the classes make it a little more reasonable.

The management is also poor. Sometimes they don't even have towels available. Basketballs, hard to find. For years the instructors couldn't figure out the sound equipment, or it wasn't working properly. They seem to have finally figured that out. One cycle instructor only played heavy metal music in his class. Another plays "music" that only consists of a beat, for 45 minutes straight. Several of the instructors are significantly overweight. that's inspiring.

They send me letters every year with price increases, telling my what a good deal i'm getting. I'd drop it tomorrow, but the wife needs something to do.

on the other hand, the magazine they put out is not bad. I don't think that makes up for the rest though.

Im happy with Fairfax Counties Rec centers all 9 of them but will agree that there not cheap .but no more then these private fitness centers. I dont use the weight rooms but they look like theres plenty of machines, TVs over them plus big swimming pools. No theres no 'towel service" so what..They have all kinds of classes spinning ,dancing you name it..

All that said... Sharon..get someone who knows what there doing to operate a floor scubbing machine in the locker rooms at Cub Run. Black crap all over is not acceptable with a facility thats what 6 years old..Maybe thats why people go to the other places...The Park Authority should take a course on basic managment of the places before they get so carried away with classes...keep it clean damn it..

Took a tour of the Centreville location this weekend. An individual membership is $110 a month. This doesn't include access to the new Reston facility. If you want to use Centreville AND Reston, it's $144 a month.

Another thing to add...

The high price was pitched to me as this facility isn't seen as simply a gym but a tad country club'ish. I'd accept this rationale, as it is different than other places, except there are too many stinky, weird, inconsiderate individuals. Why is that worth the high price?

I am paying $75 (just increased) going to the Centreville location. It is definitely less crowded. My GF is is going to Planet Fitness for $20 a month...basic no frills package....might check that out...anybody have experience there? Random musings/observations at Centreville:

- Koreans...everywhere...but mostly in the pool area/dry sauna and whirlpool. They do not seem to know how to swim as they bob up and down the first lane of pool for some reason. Can you please not lay down in the dry sauna and take up all of the room? Also, when wrinkles start to appear on your hand, that is a sign to leave the whirlpool...let's not spend an hour in there.

- Water aerobics at night....ummm, everyone in there is HUGE and the lady running the show is way too energized. How many calories can you burn jumping up and down in a pool, especially when you are floating most of the time due to your large size...maybe 10 in an hour?

- Men's Room - yes, agree with other poster, there are freaks in there that just stare at you....especially on the bench outside the sauna......if you are not drying off, move along....that bench is not a place to just hang out...freaks! Also, towels are available, no need to walk around like Adam. Do not take up about 4 lockers to dress/undress with towels on the floor, your crap all over the place, and then dilly dally for 1/2 hour.....there is no reason changing your clothes should take more than 5 minutes. There is also some freak who was just randomly clearning his throat and spitting on the floor while in the can....wtf? Finally, I am pleasantly suprised when I hear someone speak English....guess my country isn't gone yet...

The one good thing going for it is the hot girls at the front desk...for the most part. If they wore bikinis that would be even better.....would definitely improve my attendance.

This thread is making me LMFAO. Lifetime is the second coming of Bally's Total Fitness (RIP). I worked at one 10 years ago as a youngin' and it was a clone of LT, right down to all staff hiding unless there was a client. I worked at the front desk making 7.00/hr and had to hear members complain to me all day every day since the "managers" were harder to find than Waldo.

I'm with you on this one. I hate it when people strip naked, then walk over to the sink, go to the bathroom, walk back to the sink, stand in front of the mirror, and so on. I know it's a locker room, but some people take the nudity way too far. No one wants to see your old, wrinkled junk. And the hair dryers are for the hair on your HEAD, not your balls!

I can't enjoy my local LaFitness because of the pandemy, at least la fitness customer service warned me from visiting the gym, today is definitely an era of online training.

And I really like online training. This is great, because I also connected the children to these classes. And we practice together every day. Recently, I tried yoga online, which did not have enough time for so long. And I really liked it.

Started long ago at Lifetime with the Barbarians on the basketball court acting like complete asshats. Street ball and fights and lifetime employees run and hide so they don't have to deal with low budget trash that thought they ran the place. Nothing better than smoking them on the court and laughing while we said "next"!!

The doctor told me to take these capsules that they sell on this website, which are very good for skin regeneration. The truth is that they helped me a lot, especially to take care of myself and regenerate my skin without any problem. The problem was one of the things that I liked the most now that the recovery started, I noticed that my wound healed faster.
