If your wife has been teaching 20 yrs and has a Masters than at a minimum she is making $84,000, possibly as much as $88,000. I'm all for teachers making more...just be accurate with your info!

FCPS pay scales are all public domain on fcps.edu

And is $84,000 for 9 months worth of work? If so, that's an annualized salary of $112,000, which sounds pretty well paid to me.

Any teacher that only devotes 9 months a year to their profession will never achieve that type of salary.

Plus, if you divide the number of hours they work in those 9 months by their salary, it ends up being just a fair wage. If you think teachers only work from 8 to 3, 5 days a week, you are being simplistic and don't know anything about teaching.

Teachers have to grade papers and tests, create tests, create lesson plans, as well as deal with administrative tasks. Every person I know who teaches spends at least 4 hours a night doing grading, reading reports and grading them, coming up with new lesson plans and all sorts of other things. Then during summer vacation, they go to conferences, take courses and do other things to improve their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge, often at their own expense.

All I know is I wouldn't want to be a teacher. Anyone who thinks they are overpaid should shut up and try it themselves. I almost feel sorry for my friends that teach.

They're free to quit and find another job if they aren't getting paid enough.

Follow threads much?

My comment was in response to "wondering's" comment:

"And is $84,000 for 9 months worth of work? If so, that's an annualized salary of $112,000, which sounds pretty well paid to me."

As well as the overall topic of this thread, that teachers are overpaid.

Way to come in and make a comment that you think was relevant to a discussion about bitching about teachers being underpaid. Also, notice that I said their wages end up being fair when you consider all the hours they sepnd doing their jobs (because "Wondering" thought you could annualize an $84,000 salary "for 9 month's work" to $112,000.)

So you know how simple minded people are who try to claim that teachers get paid well considering how they only have to work "9 months out of the year" and all their other lame, uninformed remarks.

I bet she also spends her summers advancing her teaching skills, most likely at her own expense. Or teaching summer school or doing tutoring to earn some extra money.

I'm surprised nobody commented on librarians making $90K+.

Well, maybe for PW county, that might be a bit high, but for this area in general, that's not exactly an exhorbitant amount.

That is not small potatoes. I doubt any teacher does the job simply for the paycheck, but that is a rather well paid deal. There are teachers that want to make more, but so do I. That summer off deal is pretty good. While some may choose to teach summer school, take classes & go to conferences, most take on summer employment to combat boredom. Most enjoy teaching and children.

Just like GM and Ford the teachers unions are going to bankrupt us.

Salaries are 85% of the FCPS budget and they demand these 5% raises every year. Do the math-flat budgets, yet 85% of the pie keeps increasing 5% every year. Pretty soon they will be 95% of the budget and then what??

No money for anything else. Enough is enough. 75% of Fairfax County resdients don't have kids in school-they are not going to keep writing checks for this black hole.

We have got to reign in these outlandish demands for salary raises and pensions.

Get a 401k like the rest of us and pay for your retirement yourself!

Yeah, get a 401(k) like the rest of us and watch the free-markets take it for 35% of it's value in 10 months. Hell, I don't blame people for working in the gov't or supporting socialism now. I used to ridicule their lack of ambition, but look who's safe and secure. LOL.

I find it hard to believe that 75% of county residents don't have kids in public schools.

Granted, if I ever have kids, I won't be sending them to a public school because it breeds an institutional mindset of dependence on government, but I'm pretty sure most parents in this area are lulled into believing that it's okay to send their kids to these conditioning and institutionalizing schools because they rank 2nd, 3rd or 4th nationwide every year.

My 401(k) only lost about 17% this year, year-to-date. But then again, that is peanuts compared to my private wealth management account at Morgan Stanley. I lost about $215,000 year-to-date, or about 23% of my portfolio.

Unless this goes on for more than 3 years, however, I'm not going to panic just yet. I don't need the money for at least another 15 years, more likely 27 years.

BTW, if you intend on cashing your social security check when you qualify to receive one, YOU SUPPORT SOCIALISM.

I would like to comment on Teacher's Salaries. Before I met my wife I was with the school of thought that teachers get paid way too much. But after seeing the amount of time and money she puts into being a teacher I realize I couldn't have been more wrong. It is not possible for my wife to sit down on the couch at the end of the day and watch TV without feeling guilty about not planning or grading. Imagine that - Feeling guilty about not working when you come home from work. Then there's the money issue. After seeing how much (of our own) money went to purchasing supplies last year, I asked her to keep a tally for this year. We are already at a couple hundred dollars. They get $100 reimbursed at the end of the year and I would be shocked if that was still in effect next year after the hack job they're doing on the 2010 budget. There is the benefit of summers off (which is not quite 3 months - 10 weeks) however, being that she never misses a day of work it's not that much more than what I get working in private sector (6 weeks counting holidays).

I think the thing that gets me the most is the 0% COLA. At a time when inflation is 5%, her salary is actually decreasing.

All this being said - How did we get here? The housing situation. More Forclosures = Less people paying taxes = Hack job on budget.

I just want to say thank you to all those morons that bought a house even though they couldn't afford it. My wife and I are financially responsible (scrooges better term), big savers, make 100k year and even with houses around our area going for 100k less this year than they were last year, we know we still can't afford it. How ridiculous is that?

Not that I question the $$ teachers make and hours they dedicate, but gotta mention that there are other professions that require much more that typical 8 hrs/day & 40hrs/week. Ever been travelling out on Sunday nights and coming home back late on Fri or even on Saturdays, like many IT consultants do? And it's not like they all make $100K/yr or more.

I don't think you're quaranteed a 5% annual raise in any industry; these days any raise is a miracle. My point is, in good times we're all glad to pay teachers any $$ they want. In bad times - sorry, all have to share the troubles.

Ok. I looked it up and it seems a teacher with FCPS with 20 years and a MA makes $81,727 (assuming I am reading the chart correctly).

http://fcps.edu/hr/salary/pdf/fy14/14JanScale/Jan%202014%20194%20day%20teacher.pdf

Yes, they get a pension, but the OP mentions "free healthcare" which is not true according to this chart: http://www.fcps.edu/hr/benefits/publications/2014/PremiumsMedicalDental.pdf They do have some premiums to pay.

This talk of 5% raises. When was the last time they received a 5% raise? Over the past 5 or 6 years it's been nothing or what...1%? 2%?

Yes. 194 days=38.8 weeks. So what's your point? What are you reading into what I wrote? I didn't say the salary was high or low. I only posted the salary since previous posts were bantering around different numbers.
