Willard, Virginia

i was wondering if anyone had any pictures or stories about Willard, the town which existed before Dulles was built.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willard,_VA

"Willard was located at the intersection of Willard Road (now Stonecroft Boulevard) and Sterling Road (now Horsepen Road). This intersection was surrounded by extensive farmland, housing, schools, places of worship, the Willard store (until 1907), and Blue Ridge Airfield (1938-1951). Willard stood west of Floris, north of Pleasant Valley, and south of Farmwell (now Ashburn). Willard was regarded as a crossroads and a distinctive community until 1958, when construction of Washington Dulles International Airport began."

It was the birthplace of Willard Scott, the famed weatherman.

The amazing thing is Dulles was originally proposed to be built in BURKE!

How different the Fairfax County 'burbs would have been if that had happened!

I just heard that recently and thought that it was a joke. When did this discussion take place? My understanding that it was essentially where Burke Centre is today. I would appreciate a link to any publications that discuss this as it sounds like an interesting part of local history. Was there a name for the airport before it was called Dulles?

I thought it was a joke as well when I first heard about it...in 1980. My 7th grade history teacher told us that story on the first day of school. (Mary Lipsey?) I believe she's involved in the Braddock heritage resource listed as well.

Just went over to the heritage site and this was highlighted on the front page:

"And get off my lawn!" Johns was heard screaming.

(Or that's what he would've said had it been today vs. 1951.)
