Man Dies in Reston area Crash


Reston Police District - Fairfax County Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on Sunrise Valley Drive near Commerce Park Drive.

An 82-year-old woman was driving a 2000 Subaru Legacy when she struck the rear of a Fairfax Connector bus while she attempted to change lanes at around 7 p.m. Friday, August 23.

The driver and her 82-year-old passenger were both transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The passenger, Webster Griffith of Fieldstone Lane in Reston, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. No charges have been placed. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are continuing the investigation.

She was going 45-50 mph per hour in the right lane, was far behind the bus but didn't notice it had stopped. She came too close at the high rate of speed, swerved into the left lane a little too late, didn't clear the bus and the passenger side got nailed in an offset crash - the most brutal kind of front end colission.
