downsizing experiences

What are the pros and cons of downsizing after age 50 (or after the kids leave the house)? What are the pros and cons of moving closer to the city or to an area outside of Fairfax County? Has anyone on here done it? What do you now enjoy and what do you miss about your single family suburban lifestyle?

Whatever you do, don't upsize. I've seen that too. Two years later, they're exhausted and putting the dream house on the market and moving to a condo in Florida.

Why the fuck would you stay in this area after the age of 50?
I do understand working until retirement, but if you have the resources get out of this shit hole and start living!!

Advantages:

1. Sell the larger house and buy something smaller FARTHER away from the city. Bank the equity and add it into your retirement nest egg.
2. Buy a one level home, wide hallways, with all of the amenities that you prefer and enjoy. Make sure things are handicapped accessible (future proof the home in case your health deteriorates.

No idea why you would want to move CLOSER to the shithole.

We are at the point where we are seeking a place to retire away from here. It is too crowded and expensive to retire here. The only good things are proximity to hospitals, airports, military facilities. We are retired military and want to be able to shop on base. While we like Virginia, Charlottesville area is not near any big bases.

Question, anybody care to recommend a moving company? We need to pack up a UHaul Truck but lack the muscle to move a bed, a couch and some boxes. Are there any starving student movers around?

We went to the 7-11 in Herndon off of Elden Street and hired three movers to help us. Total cost was $20 plus pizza and soda.

I knew a neighbor who moved into the city after he husband unexpectedly died because her job was in Foggy Bottom (GWU). People don't want to commute far when they're older. Ditching your car for more walking is probably not bad either as the loss of mobility will come in your 60s (14%) and 80s (40%). Another neighbor in her 70s moved into an independent living condo.

OP here---there are some really good thoughts here. I agree with JustanFYI on the idea of buying cheaper and adding to the retirement fund and also buying one level with wide doorways, etc. I also agree with the post about not wanting to commute and ditching the car for a more walkable lifestyle. I'm all for getting out of traffic. I am thinking more of a small town environment. Thank you for your thoughts. This area is stressful and financially draining as a person ages.
