Reston Police failed two nights in a row to catch suspects in a string of robberies. One robbery happened while Reston police were two blocks away investigating the first.


Saturday night - Fox Mill Giant -
Attempted Armed Robbery and Abduction in the Fox Mill Area
Two men hid inside the Giant Food store, located at 2551 John Milton Drive, on Saturday, October 4 and waited to rob employees after they closed the store. Around 11:10 p.m., two store employees, 19 and 33-year-old Herndon-area women, locked the doors and began to clean up when the suspects appeared wearing masks in one of the aisles. They reportedly brandished a gun at one of the victims and assaulted her. The suspects took both victims to the office where they bound one of the victims and demanded money. Before the victims could comply, the suspects received a phone call and fled. The victims did not require medical treatment and no money was taken.

The suspects were described as black. They were both wearing masks and latex gloves. The first suspect was approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds. The second suspect was approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds.

Two Robberies at Hunter Woods Plaza
Police are investigating two separate robberies that occurred within minutes of each other on Sunday, October 5 in Reston. Officers were initially called to a church in the 2300 block of Hunters Woods Plaza at 8:56 p.m. for a robbery. An investigation determined the victim, a 22-year-old Reston man, was sitting alone on a bench outside the church talking on a cellular phone. He was approached by a man who brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s money. The victim complied then ran inside the church. The suspect fled on foot.

The suspect was described as Hispanic, in his late 20s. He was about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

While investigating the first robbery, officers were then called to the area of Colts Neck Road and Winterthur Lane for a second robbery. Officers determined the victim, a 34-year-old Reston man, was walking near the intersection around 9 p.m. when he was approached by a man. The suspect brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim complied and then noticed a second suspect waiting in the distance. Both suspects fled the area on foot.

The first suspect was described as Hispanic, in his 20s. He was about 5 feet 6 inches tall. The second suspect was described as Hispanic, in his 20s. He was about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 155 pounds.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that these two robberies may be related.

But you can bet they will catch EVERY Sticker violation within 15 miles

In all fairness to the County police, those familiar with the Reston trails are a two-sided sword. They offer a handy get away for criminals but also, as Reston's "highlight" are in use by dog walkers, runners, bicyclists and strollers throughout the day.

With yesterday's "noonish" shooting, for police to charge into the wooded area after a couple armed men, even with dogs, would be reckless and could be dangerous, maybe even deadly for innocent people using the trails at the time.

Apartments and Homeowners Associations have a responsiblity to work WITH Police to ensure the property is maintained in a safe and secure way. During interviews, members of the community complained that areas of the complex had become "seedy" and frequented by "unsavory" people for quite a while. When conditions like this are allowed to fester, its just a matter of time before it erupts.

The police can't be everywhere but communities working together can effect change.

As for the Herndon and Vienna Police track record. Has anyone bothered to check out the crime stats for these two towns? You need only drive down Elden Street (at Alabama Dr) to see that Herndon "has a handle" on the vagrant immigrants.

I certainly wouldn't want the Reston District police to feel uncomfortable or to encounter anything dangerous. The point is they seem to easily lose these criminals. The pathways and wooded areas of Reston have been around for over 40 years. Over those 40 years the Police have had many strategies, including bull dozing a hill and a police sub station in that exact apartment complex.

As for the poster who said the police can't be on every street corner, no FFX police can't, but when there is crime spree in one area you increase patrols. In the above case, the police had a perimeter setup and a crime was committed in that perimeter.

Time to put those bicycles, dirt bikes and the new FFX Police ATV into action.

Junes - you make a fair point. The trails are in fact used by many in the public, and are a key element of the utopian vision of Reston as a community. But it also brings up the irony of Reston. Despite world class nature trails, fantastic recreational facilities, social programs of all types, efforts from all sorts of reasonably well heeled religious and charitable organizations - you name it - Reston is socialism at its best - the Section 8 recipient populations in Reston continue commit a grossly disproportional and outsized number of crimes. Depressingly, despite all of the area's wealth and assistance available to them, they also continue to lag significantly in educational achievement and generally make life choices that make life much harder and far more dysfunctional. There is a culture of poverty that is causing these problems. Let's quit feeding it.

I drove by Glenvale about an hour ago and there are two cruisers at the Condo Assoc, and I don't doubt undercover will be working the area.

Even though no one has said anything publicly, we all know this is gang (and probably drub) related, which brings it up a notch.

Police have identified the second victim as a 22-year-old man. Both victims are from the Reston area. The victims’ injuries are life-threatening. This investigation is ongoing as police continue to follow up numerous leads. Detectives are looking into the possibility that this incident is gang related.

Several weekday mornings recently there have been Fairfax County police checkpoints on Algkonkian Parkway stopping Cascades (Loudoun County!) residents with expired tags, inspections, etc. They setup right on the county line of Fairfax and Loudoun, and the people they're ticketing are your normal working citizens. Why the hell are they not spending their time a couple miles down the road in Reston putting the boot down on these gangsta douchebags?

He was making a direct reference to the post that "Fuck reston liberals" made. "Fuck reston liberals" implied that Bob is a "bastard" and Obama is a "socialist nigger pig."

What Bob did in the first sentence of his response is say, "I like Obama." He then goes on to take "Fuck reston liberals" to task for using that phrase to describe Obama, which is evident by all of the white trash redneck trailer park references that Bob made.

But then, since I am probably Bob pretending to be another guy defending Bob, I doubt my explanation will clear things up for anybody without an IQ of at least 12.
