Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
And an even better question is why are we still paying extra "fuel surcharges" on everything from taxi rides to and from the airport, to airline tickets to electricity? For a while, it seemed as though fuel prices were used to justify all manner of price increases. The price of gasoline has gone down significantly but the other prices seem to remain.
Last week, I took a Washington Flyer cab from Dulles to home and I still had to pay an extra $2.50 "fuel surcharge" in addition to the normal fare.
Business is about making money. As a business owner, i wouldn't get rid of the fee either. People are paying it, so why rescind it? In fact, the minute gas goes back north of $2 I'd double it. Whaddya gonna do about it, complain to someone whos getting a piece of the action? Hah! Taxicabs usually have a monopoly in the market they serve, so its not like you can go across the street.

A lot of prices and fees are "sticky" - that is they're in place until the regional government or board rescinds them. Consider it a balance for the 3 to 4 months in which they were paying $3.50 a gallon and charging fares based on when gas was $2.00 a gallon.

How about the BP in Vienna which is still close to $2.00 a gallon. I rarely, if ever, see a car stopped there.

looks kike the Exxon is now closed and Shell is still at $1.89
Around 2005, BP decided that they were going to divest of their real estate holdings and offered the current lease holders the option to purchase the properties. It was a pretty great deal and they were able to purchase the real estate for a price that was a little on the low side. There was one snag. They had to sign an agreement that they would continue to purchase their gas from a particular BP distributor. Well once this distributor had them by the balls, they really put the screws to the dealers. These stations are paying up to $.70 more a gallon than they would pay a competing distributor. There are some lawsuits floating around out there, but many dealers have already gone out of business. Without service bays, these stations are doomed. Just an FYI so you don't hate on the dealer.
It's 1.69 in Chantilly (or was in the morning). I would expect if the people running the stations were honest, the price would be noticably different on my way home.
I am not sure if all the real estate holdings were sold. I know there were some dealers unable/uninterested in purchasing the property. If BP still owns the land, the pricing for the dealer would still be competitive.

You're just a young 'un. I remember .28 cents a gallon.
Until the government started targeting big oil with excessive taxes and regulations they were very reasonable.
In April of 2008 on the campaign trail Barack Hussein said "under my policies energy costs will necessarily skyrocket"!
You haven't seen anything yet if you think gas prices are high now.
Hussein's goal is to bring this country down! Wake up America!!!
Many American's will be dieing of hypothermia in the winter and heat stroke in the summer in the coming years. People who are just barely making it now just won't be able to pay for heating and air conditioning.
It's all a part of the agenda 21 culling process along with Barry care.
Ray LaHood announced today that America is one big pothole; an Obama appointee. The roads are terrible. The people who have purchased the most fuel efficient vehicles have the greatest service costs for wheel, tire and alignment costs are tabulated.
Live close to work, shop Amazon, and buy off road vehicles for your daily driver. You'll be happy you did.
