I was at the parade and the Dems had a bigger turnout than the GOP. They seemed to push clean energy and the LGBT agenda as well as their individual candidates. I am a tea party-leaning GDI and no fan the current slate of Dems; I will probably hold my nose and vote for the Cooch in November. That said - - and realizing this is just FFX - - I have to admit the Dems looked better organized and more confident than the GOP did today.

This one actually makes an interesting argument, and I will honestly give it some thought. As of now, I'm far from convinced that this isn't revisionism for the party's sake, but I'm open-minded, and my perceptions can be changed.

Regarding the "new strategy": I somewhat suspect that Herman Cain was simply an attempt to alter the image of the party. He was far too insane to be elected, but he did broadcast the message to potential black voters that the GOP was willing to embrace African Americans while leaving the safety-net of knowing that he would never actually carry the party's nomination. Calling attention to his insanity even gave some Conservatives the chance to level charges of racism against the media and any Democrat critics (even though that made no sense at all, since if they were anti-Cain, they must be pro-Obama).

Again, it will be interesting to watch this evolve. I wonder why it wasn't until the last decade that the GOP showed any interest at all in distancing themselves from the perception of racism? And now that the interest exists, it's fascinating to see 50 years of history being recharacterized in a different light.

The first link that I gave you above which you dismissed as "two guys who did a study" was a NYT Magazine article re a study by two political science professors who used empirical results from voting and voter surveys to disprove one of the central tenets of the mythical "Southern Strategy."

The second, while from a more conservative leaning site walks through most of the central disconnects in the story as it now exists in a fairly easy to follow manner supported by fact without a lot of BS otherwise, which is why I posted it.

There are many others if you want to look. Which is doubtful given that you're already invested in it.

And apparently you're not smart enough to understand that you're talking to more than one person here. The only posts that I've made in this thread were the two above re the "Southern Strategy." The first link you posted was utter crap. Trying to form a conclusion based on surveys which try to figure out what motivated people 50 years ago is ridiculous... I would have a hard time explaining my own motivations for all that I did even a decade ago, and expecting people to give honest answers about their own racism is ludicrous on its own face. Many who were die-hard racists in the 60s have broadened their views since then, and even if they could precisely recall their mindset at the time, expecting a decent portion of them to admit what shames them now would be foolish at best. If you think it was "easy to follow" then you made no attempt to read it with a critical eye.

There was a lot of "this (questionable fact) ocurred, therefor this (questionable conclusion) must be so". I'm not saying that it was wrong... it would just take a lot of effort to truly understand and/or validate it in its entirety. I was tired, and I did intend to come back and read it again. And no, I wasn't just going to look for one little point of disagreement and declare the entire thing to be invalid... I still might do it at some point, because yes - the "Southern Strategy" is regarded as fact, and seems to match up with observation, but unlike most Conservatives, I tend to question things, even when I've found the source to be trustworthy in the past. I do like to have a firm grasp of the facts, even when they aren't convenient for me.

If you really think that Cain was a great candidate, then I think it speaks volumes about the value of your opinions. Sure, against the likes of Palin and Bachman, he might not look quite so crazy, but to say that he was the best candidate that your party could field - well, I'll just leave the punchline to your own imagination. In comparison, Romney looked like he'd been groomed from birth for the role, and even he openly believed that 47% of Americans were of too poor of a pedigree to be interested in more than hand-outs.

And yes, I spent some time processing all of this today. I'll still keep a question-mark beside the "Southern Strategy" argument for the moment, but there was a genuine realization on my part that we're dealing with a segment of the population which turns unflinchingly to a news source that's proven wrong time and time again, without any recognition or concern for glaring a provable inacuracies. They tend to support their party as an entire package, where Democrats find many faults and disagreements within their own. It's a difference in mindset that Conservatives seemingly can't comprehend... that's why if you're a "Liberal", you MUST be against the 2nd amendment, and you MUST be for limiting soda sizes, and you MUST be for Obamacare. The fact that non-Conservatives break the party line so often seems to be totally lost on the GOP's favorite talking heads.

I have no respect for the name-calling, and I see it as the bastion of shallow minds (on both sides). I also doubt that I'll be wasting any more time on this thread. It's not just punctuation -- you actually have difficulty forming sentences correctly. Neither of you have had a halfway intelligent contribution since the "Southern Strategy" links (which were simply copied from another questionable source), so I felt that this thread was due for some content which might actually help somebody learn something.

I can understand that... you can't type much without making me laugh, either. For what it's worth, the failure to distinguish between the word "believes" and "beliefs" goes far beyond a simple grammatical error. I can certainly understand why you post links to the words of others instead of attempting to pose an intelligent argument of your own.

Let me clue you in about something: if you're unable to paraphrase or explain something that you read, then you did not understand it. I'm sure that you can find words in articles that make you feel good about yourself, but there's a lot of surrounding content, too. I do realize that many of your talking points require a complete lack of context in order to seem sensible, though, so I won't harp on the point.
