Fresh Seafood

Where is the best place to purchase fresh seafood from reliable (safe) sources? Grand Mart and all that looks okay but I suspect much of the seafood is coming from toxic canals in Mexico.

I second that...

the fish market on Maine Ave in DC is the best. it's right by the river, near the Jefferson Memorial.

The crab legs I bought at Maine Ave 2 weeks ago really sucked. You can always tell they aren't fresh when you can't get that nice leg meat out in 1 piece.
I think it was the Pruitt boat I bought them from.

Super H on Rt 50 across from Paul VI HS. They even have them live in the
tank if you like. Cant get any fresher than that.

I worry about the Grand Mart/ Super H sources. They do have relatively fresh seafood but I just have to believe they come from the toxics...

Is there one boat/stand at the DC Waterfront that is better than another?

tnx

The Maine Ave Fish Market is just for show....those "boats" are non-powered barges and never move, except to sink. The fish is trucked in just like any other place that sells fish. It may be good or not.

If you want real "fresh off the boat" seafood you have to go where the boats actually come in to unload their catch....like Gloucester, MA or Cape May, NJ, etc.

Maine Ave Fish Market is hundreds of water miles from any actual fish port.

I agree about Maine ave it always seemed cheezy to have it on boats (from trucks) on the stinking potomac. Peps swear by the freshness though.

While Grand Mart/Super H Mart have a good selection, these places smell way too "fishy" for my taste and the best fish mongers really don't smell that way. For reasonably priced retail I like Wegman's - they had yellow fin (yellowfin?) tuna for $14.99/lb and they were cutting it right off the fish. Not sashimi grade, but still very nice on the grill. I also buy sea scallops and flounder there a couple of times a month and have never been disappointed. Whole Foods is also very good and they tend to have a larger selection, especially if you want a whole fish.

Maine Avenue is good, but too far out of the way unless I am planning a crab boil in the summer.

Just about every source has some sort of toxic aspect to it. Even
fish from the Potomac or the Chesapeake. Unless they're farm raised,
its very difficult to avoid. I stopped worrying and started eating.

Farm raised tend to have high Benzine levels - dont eat farm raised fish. I sure as hell would limit fish consumed from the Potomac.

The Potomac empties into the Chesapeake which empties into the Atlantic.
The right grade of Benzine gives it a distinctive flavor. If you put it
on a charcoal grill, you wont even notice it. Be sure and start the
coals with lighter fluid.

Fresh crab legs by how the meat comes out? Umm.... that means you overcooked the legs you idiot.

Maine Ave Fish Market - you are correct, no boats come in to the barge and delivers, as for one, its a small waterway really, its a tributary of the potomac. As far as freshness, there is no middle man, its coming from the docks and trucked to the spot.

As far as "docks" only NJ and Maine, well thats just stupid too. So stupid I wont reply.

Carry on retards.

Duh1 your acerbic yet focused contribution is valued. Mostly I agree. I have never had fresh crab legs as they are almost always frozen (unless you live in Alaska or have them flown in in season).

You're the idiot...the Maine Ave fish market is on the Washington Channel, a waterway that was created by the construction of East Potomac Park in 1942. Prior to that Maine Avenue area was on the east bank of the Potomac River....you could look straight across the River at where National Airport is now....Haines Point didn't exist.

Yeah, I should have qualified the Gloucester/Cape May remark...they were the first two ports that popped into my mind, maybe because I have personally bought fish off the boats there, having tied my own boat up there during vacations. Of course there are MANY more fishing ports in the USA than just those two. However, the nearest commercial port to DC that I can think of is Crisfield Md and to a much lesser extent, Annapolis...but they mainly handle crabs and the few oysters that are harvested in the Bay nowadays.

I'm not including the striper poachers that were busted recently....
