Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I just got a job in the afternoons downtown which means I have to take the metro every morning. One problem. There's never any parking in the Metro garage or surrounding area and I don't make enough money to pay $20 a day in DC. What can I do? Seems kind of short-sightedness to have the metro and such a limited number of parking spaces.

Easy... Find a bus route that goes to the Metro. There are Park and Ride lots at many bus stops. If there isn't a Park and Ride lot, often you can find a residential area type street where people park on the shoulder, and you can park there and hop on the bus. The bus is I think 60 cents with a transfer to the metro, something like that. Maybe 80 cents.
Or you could bike part way. If you work from 10am to 2pm, you are off rush hour times, which means you are allowed to take your bike on the train.

Sorry, read that wrong. Rush hour in the evening is 4-7pm. You can't enter the system with a bike between those hours. If you enter at 6:30pm and get off the train at 7:15pm, no one will bug you. 10pm is fine- you will just need lights on your bike, but you can get a light kit at walmart for $10. Downside of biking to the Metro at noon in July is that you're probably gonna be sweating unless you pedal easy. Also, you have to use the elevator with your bike in the Metro. They aren't allowed on escalators unless the elevators are out of service.

I mean, if you enter at say 3pm and and get off the train at 4:15pm, no one will bug you.

Point...OP.
And we'll played, I might add...
Nothing like seeing someone with a big mouth getting snow-dragoned on the Interwebz.
Stabitha, by rule...one more point and the OP wins. I'd recommend the leg sweep...

Somebody posted a thread about this a long time ago. Drive to west falls church and park there. There is a private lot across the street that charges the same rate as the metro lot and it never fills up.
Trying to take the bus from the commuter lot off-peak would be a nightmare.

Depending on when you arrive, there is "reserved" parking in the garages that is free for all from 10am to 2am. If you arrive after 10am and there are free spaces, one of them can be all yours. You still get to pay the parking fees, and the spaces are not at all guaranteed.

That's great in the morning, not in the afternoon. I've looked into this already.

Vienna metro on the north side, towards Oakton HS. There are some residential streets there you can park on. Get a cheap bike or scooter and chain it up at the metro, or walk it.

Where I marked in red... I drove by today and there wasn't a single car parked there, probably because school is out. You can park there though. It's even in the shade.
