Fairfax Pet Owners Beware - Pill Pockets

From my FFX neighborhood post

My black lab has been in the hospital since last Thursday after having ingested acetaminophen during her midday walk. It is unclear why or how this happened since I was at work. The vets at Friendship Hospital recovered pills totaling 22,000 milligrams. More frightening is the fact the medication was in pill pockets. I live in a Condo, there is no yard that the perpetrator could have thrown pills into. Our lab had to pick this up on her midday walk through N Street, Vermont Ave, 13th Street, and Logan Circle.

Fortunately, she threw up most of the medication at Friendship Thursday evening and is expected to recover. Our little girl has spent the last week going through ups and downs each day, solving one issue then another one surfaces, and a blood transfusion. It will be another 2 days before we can finally bring her home. We are so thankful that she is going to pull through.

The MPD informed me that I cannot file a police report because the dog is considered property under DC law and we don't have a witness to the crime. I'm beside myself on the logic, but that is a fight for another day.

It has certainly been an extremely expensive lesson for my family, and heartbreaking that our docile lab was subjected to such a dastardly dead.

I hope this post will alert owners to the incident and remind us of the importance of keeping a close eye on our four-legged friends as they are out and about.

How could your dog have eaten 22 THOUSAND mg of tylenol without amyone noticing? Isn't that over 40 pills? I feel stupider for having read this post.

Yeah and that's assume it's extra strenght too.. otherwise you're looking at close ot 60 pills. Also, how the hell are you coming to this conclusion on dosage anyway? SOme digested.. some threw up? How the hell would you come up with this number? Also.. that'd 44+ pills covered in fake dog food.. that's a lot of eating.

This is a serious crime, and what is FFX PD doing, giving out parking tickets?

This is another clear reason why The FAIRFAX POLICE DEPARTMENT needs to be HELD ACCOUNTABLE to the citizens and TAXPAYERS of Fairfax County.

Get with it, Bulova and Long!

huh? Even as little as two x-strength per pocket that would only be 22 'treats' or pill pockets. Even a small dog could eat that amount in under a 30 seconds. My suspicion is that they were hidden in ivy where the dog owner could not see them but the dog could sure smell them. To the owner it might just be the dog rooting around in the ivy (esp at night). My guess is also that the ivy was more than a few feet away from the walk. An owner would notice doggy chowing at their feet. Hence the saboteur probably put them in ivy/bushes well in their yard because walkers with those long leashes were letting fido crap there.

This is an even weirder response than the OP. Beat it creep.

I'm so tired of this shit. Your dog is not human, nor is it in any way a substitute for a human child. Fuck you and your "little girl". As for the story itself, sounds like a bunch of bullshit. I strongly suspect Münchausen syndrome by proxy.

If somebody did it on purpose to harm animals, they wouldn't be in enclosed pill packs. They would roll up some ground beef or some dog food and put them inside.

A similar story recently made the news. People that intentionally harm animals eventually harm humans. This crime should be taken seriously folks. Need to find this sneaky and evil person!

You apparently do not value living creatures. You are sick and twisted. Seek counseling or kill yourself.

If you feel so strongly about the issue and the only one who seems to care, why don't you take it into your own hands to find the person which committed the "crime?"

So many tiny issues/special interests people get so worked up about these days!

I did not know cops here in VIRGINIA have anything to do with DC.

But hey, if this was to happen in Virginia, a dog is property. If you don't like it then feel free to march on Richmond to demand a change to state law. Good luck.

WTF? "Our little girl" "She is"

It's a dog! Not a child.

When did people starting pets as if they are kids and having operations that cost $10,000.

In the old days when a dog got expensive you took it out to the wood shed and pulled an old yeller.

Believe me there are vet hospitals and they will milk you dry for your beloved pets care. We are not in a financial position to spend thousands on a pet so when our pets get very ill its time to put them down. It sucks but 9 times out of 10 they will die anyway - might as well keep the $$$ and get a new pet.

Excellent!

And throwing in the "Munchausen Syndrome by proxy" knockout punch...made my morning!
