Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I remember when I was a kid growing up in the back in the 1980s they where tons of Fireflies. Last night I was in bed talking to my wife about them. My daughter is 5 years old and I don't thinks she ever saw a fire files. My older children who lives with x did have experience with fireflies. any reason why they gone?
Plenty around here. Maybe you just live in a place with too much concrete and light to see as many as you did elsewhere. Or put down things like grub pesticides on the lawn. Or maybe your kid just has been a little young to be outside looking much after dark.
They usually first start coming out in early June. More over the next few weeks. Peak around early July. Then they'll start to taper off as Summer goes on. Also there are are more than one kind so you'll have different groups surge at different times. And the population varies from year to year.
Thus far I'll grant that this doesn't seem to be a big year for them yet. Maybe be a little behind schedule because of the cooler and wetter than normal Spring. I have seen quite a few though over the last few weeks.
There are some in my Centreville area but for sure not like "I remember when I was a kid" (*).
Then again, I just spent an hour on my front porch feeding the various semi-wildlife and saw =one= honeybee - and that's the FIRST honeybee I've seen this year (plenty of carpenter bees, a few bumble bees...ONE honeybee).

(*) As a kid, of course, the (usually successful) goal was to collect jarS of the lightning bugs; I've only seen, like, 4 so far in my area.
