Gunsmiths in NOVA - any recommendations?
Posted by: custom job ()

Hey all, I'm looking for a gunsmith in the area to do some work. Never used one before, so I'm looking for some recommendations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Northern Va Gunworks...professional and expert gunsmiths. They have odd hours so call first. If you want your hand held and sweet talk, go elsewhere. They're not into BS, but do quality work and are honest. Decades of experience and do a lot of work for a variety of agencies and Fed's.

Is this typical, or are these nickel and dime add-on charges? $15 extra charge because they have a similar model in stock, regardless of price?? Seems shitty.

Inbound Transfer Fees (per transaction / background check):

One Firearm $35
Two Firearms $65
Three Firearms $90
Four or more Firearms priced on Individual Case Basis
Assault Weapons: $50, applies to new production Assault Rifles or Shotguns (as defined by VA Law)
The following Inbound Transfer Surcharges also apply if applicable:

In-Stock Inventory Surcharge: $15, applies to new production firearms that we typically carry In-Stock
Wrong Address Surcharge: $15, applies to inbound transfers shipped to the wrong address --- all firearm shipments must be addressed to our FFL Premises in accordance with our instructions: Sterling Arsenal 201 Davis Drive, Unit FF, Sterling, VA 20164; Firearms shipped to our PO BOX mailing address are subject to the surcharge.
"Packing Peanut" Surcharge: $5 applied to inbound transfers received with loose packing peanuts. Please instruct your seller to not use loose packing peanuts. Packing peanuts make a huge mess and can result in lost items during the receiving process.

What kind of work do you need? Some places are better at certain jobs then others.

i AM SCARED OF GUNS AND CONFRONTATION - THAT IS WHY I HIDE BEHIND A KEYBOARD AT HOME WHERE IT IS SAFE AND I HAVE MY MOM TO PROTECT ME.

Try Blue ridge arsenal. They recently got a new gunsmith from the west coast who I've heard about on AR15.com. I don't have any experience with him but I've heard hes pretty good.

Those transfer prices listed are atrocious. QT, Quantico Tactical in Woodbridge (near potomac mills) does 15 dollar transfers if you become a member of their club. 2nd transfer is like 5 dollars extra or something like that.

Transfer fees look pretty good.
I've never heard of a dealer charging extra for a gun they have in stock.
Nor for packing peanutz.LOL.They can be a mess.I'd rather have them than a damaged gun.
I dunno about deleivery to a wrong address. How would they know? Its not right to charge me or you for ups deleivering to the wrong address. And it happens far more than you might think.
I can't figure the extra for an assault weapon,it doesn't cost any more than a regular rifle.

Do it yourself. 1911's are easy.

Go to Hatfield's in Manassas.

For a 1911 I would try Hatfield's first. They worked on a Sig for me. I got the gun back faster then what they quoted me. Heard good things about the new guy at Blue Ridge but have never used him. Not sure if he is certified to work on 1911s or not,

By change do you mean just swap out or alter existing parts?

If you're just swapping parts, then anyone can do it. You can do it yourself fairly easily.

If you're looking for someone to alter angles, etc., then I'd go with one of the on-line guys who specialize in that. They have jigs, et. al. set up to do it right every time versus even most good gunsmiths who don't necessarily. That is unless you can find someone who does a lot of that around here.

I also vote for Hatfield's in Manassas and trust me, with 1911s you NEED a gunsmith like Sam to get it done and get it done right no matter how easy it may seem. They are backlogged quite a bit on 1911s but that is EXACTLY what you want in a gunsmith. Blue Ridge has done horrible work by their previous smith who had no idea what he was doing, I saw some of the work he had done to a shotgun and how he drilled through the barrel to replace a blade front sight then filled it up with silver sodder. Go see the guys at Hatfields and just be prepared to leave your gun there for 4-6 months easy but when you get it back you will not wonder why it took so long. He has done 3 of my 1911s and 4 of my glocks and has always given me a fair price. Glock stuff I got back much faster (a couple weeks) btw.

Why so scared? So many guns.
Someone who collects should also have some armorer experiance.
Or are you one of them boys with toys kinda guy.

I think you are one of those guys who will eventually talk about the size of penis, because all you can think about is cock.

As a Stoner owner, I've put in quite a bit of time on the bench, and the only way I could get it to Israel was of course by flying El Al.

I disagree with Jack's choice of weapons, but not the number. A Glock is a double action only pistol with a bad trigger, and their "triple safety" boils down to "DON'T PULL THE TRIGGER". That's why they're issued to DC police. It was an attempt to make a gun that's idiot-proof. Failed.

Speaking of fail, the question you missed is "why do you have 7 guns that need work?"

They do great trigger and custom-fitting work to Glocks, and I have multiple guns because I like to have multiple calibers and sized models which I know is hard to understand. None of them (except for the 1911s) NEEDED work, but no 1911 comes from the factory with the internals correct and in many cases only one of the hammer hooks were cut correctly to begin with and is touching the sear. My genitals are enormous (almost hysterically large) so really I just enjoy the weapons for all the reasons other people do and a few reasons of my own. I'm not sure what a "boy with toys kinda guy" is so I cannot speak to that, and I am a certified Glock factory armorer but that doesn't mean a whole lot because of how easy they are to dissassemble and service. However I would not trust Jiffy Lube or some guy off of Craigslist to work on/customize my car and the same goes for my weapons but to each his own.

And I apologize but I feel I must drive this point home; it is almost impossible to describe, accurately, the sheer size and volume of my genitalia. I am not "compensating" nor am I bragging, however I really just cannot find a way to convey the situation down there to other people who have not made time with my package. It really is something that you must drink in with your eyes to understand and my legend is well documented through local stories passed along in local poolhalls and dive bars. My soon-to-be ex-wife needed to have a train run on her by all her co-workers at the firehouse to even begin to simulate the nights we spent together before the hatred and disgust for each other set in.

I normally do a lot of stuff myself, but the "cylinder & slide" brand sear apparently comes with extra material on it, to be filed down during installation to create a flawless match. The idea is that the custom fitted sear will hold the hammer perfectly. Like I said, I don't mind installing stuff myself, I'm just not too keen on taking a file to gun parts without any experience.

Also, I was wondering about local places, so I don't have to send the pistol off... etc.

I think I'm going to check out that Hatfield's.

Thanks.

I've only used one pistol for the last 44 years. Never modified, but abused and used for only one purpose. It's travelled the world, had every type of substance inbedded in it's cracks and crevices. A little spit, oil and polish and has never failed when I needed it. Now retired my 1911 has aged a bit but I still like it.
I would never lower it to shooting paper and glass. Or put in a case. My one friend to the end.
Nothing like age, character and scars. Things you have to earn.
