Ain't it funny how when your tires blows out on I-66, it's ALWAYS during rush hour at the time when traffic's clear to run on the shoulder? And if that coincidence ain't bad enough...ain't it even more funny that not only does your tire blow during rush hour on I-66 when traffic's clear to run on the shoulder but it also blows in such a way that you can never quite make it to the "conveniently" placed and named...EMERGENCY pull-offs? Ain't that a bitch?!?!?!

I've got the body count at 30 on I-495 'fore they up and cancel traffic runnin' on them shoulders. 'Course...you wanna' take the over on that? Cain't say I blame you...not in the least bit.

Buy runflat tires. I never have to pull over for a flat. I drive directly to the dealer and have it replaced.

Yup...I've got 'em too. Too bad a flat tire isn't the ONLY thing that could cause you to have to pull over onto a shoulder that's been cleared for traffic's use.

The point of a shoulder ESPECIALLY on a highway is to give motorists and potentially first responders if necessary, a safe place to pull over at any moment should they need to do so.

Also, a guy down the street from me was killed changing a tire on I-66...you know, back in the OLDEN TIMES. LONG before run-flats were invented.

Too bad run-flats suck other than being able to run flat.

To bad that the 495Expressway was a complete failure in relieving traffic congestion in the Tysons area. Why don't we drive the shoulder, instead of figuring out a real solution to this problem.

really? cause I have to admit 495 seems to run more smoothly thru the area. Back only seems to happen at the hotlane merge to the north and on the 66 ramp itself on the southend............

Thank you Terry McAuliffe for making this happen. You have been a visionary on transportation for years. Without you there would be no Virginia Transportation planning at all.

Wait the hot lanes did not help traffic congestion? It would be better to take the hit, remove the white "sticks" and have a aditional two lanes from 95 to tysons.

Does anyone else think it is funny that Gov. McDonnell must make an offical proclamation to tell everyone about 1.5 miles of shoulder lane being opened for use?

It is taking 20 million dollars of state money to convert pavement that already exists! Approval for such an expense has to come straight from the top.

well, seeing as it's been shoulderfied on 66 for like TWO DECADES now and not enuf bodies (as you say) have dropped there..........................well, then it seems you are CONFUSED as to how dangerous they really are then o_0

From the state's point of view, they don't give a shit how many people are killed...they want to give the public the impression they are "keeping traffic moving".

From the public's point of view, one child's blood painting 66 is one unnecessary death too many. I've travelled a lot through the US...and I've never encountered a variable shoulder situation. It's dangerous but we can disagree about that without being disagreeable.

Extending a merge lane for 1.5 miles will do nothing to ease congestion. All it will do is allow for a-holes in the regular lanes to move over to the merge lane to bypass traffic. Then more cars have to merge at the end, leading to even worse congestion. Its the same deal where Spout Run Pkwy merges into the GW Parkway. This is also what happens at the new auxillary lane between Ballston and Sycamore Street. Traffic is worse there now then it was before they opened that lane because of this. Also, why the hell is this going to cost $20 million? Its just paint.

All that being said, why would anyone be worried about safety here. This is the left shoulder and there is no left shoulder for the entire length of the HOT lanes anyway.

I disagree with that whole "states point of view" cause an unsafe road and lotsa death will hurt a credit rating down the line, y'know? And if there's one thing I DO KNOW about, it's that Gub-mints LOVE their credit rating LoLz.

that being said, yr right about the 66 shoulder being stupid and one unnecessary drop of a kid's blood on a roadway being one too many. But there are shoulder lanes elsewhere. Atlanta has them. MTA buses in Chicago do it too.

oh, and Gordon Blvd is ALWAYS disagreeable , ask around =)
