They're in NoVA for the same reason there's a growing number of liberals in Texas and other economically prosperous areas.

You see, liberals are like locusts. They vote for politicians that economically destroy their states (CA, NY, MA, IL, MD, etc) and then they move to a another state with a good economy and proceed to vote for the EXACT same types of politicians. The new state gets ruined too and then they move to the next one, and so on.

Fairfax is actually the 3rd wealthiest county behind Loudoun and Falls Church City (is that a county?). But that still makes it #4 in the country.

No, Falls Church is a city. It is not part of any county. The Commonwealth of Virginia is unique among the 50 states in that respect -- cities and counties are completely independent of one another.

As to why there are so many liberals in Fairfax County -- a troll question if I ever I saw one -- it's simply because of the education level of the population. Fairfax has the highest number of college graduates in the country. The more education a person has, the more liberal he/she tends to be. There are no Tea Party members on the faculty at Harvard or MIT. There are no liberals on Social Security ranting about the evils of big government.

That's basically correct.

Contrary to what liberals like to believe, the only advantage to the Dems/Libs is a relatively small number of persons with advanced degrees.

The next step down, among those with college degrees, there's a small advantage to Republicans/Conservatives.

For those who are high school graduates, again the advantage goes to Republicans/Conservatives.

The greatest numerical advantage is among those who did not graduate high school which trends Dem/liberal by a wide margin (~65%-35%).

So, the Dems have a few more of a smaller number of people with advanced degrees at the high end which is greatly offset by a ton of dummies at the low end.

As a result, Republicans/Conservatives probably "win" that talking point battle in terms of the overall average since they tend to be more center-weighted and that's where the greater numbers of people are.

Additionally, they tend to "feel badly" for groups that have been "discriminated against," despite the fact that these groups have discriminated against the public just as much as the public has discriminated against them. I consider myself a Democrat, but I am not a modern-day Democrat. I think the government has become too large and that the country is more polarized than ever.

The area gradually turns a shade of purple as taxes are raised for "common sense" purposes like widening roads, impacting swamplands for suburban development, and investing in schools "for the children." This is probably the best balance BTW of progressivism...decent infrastructure, your kids aren't learning about Jesus in schools, but the cancer continues to spread as they start bringing along their brown friends to do yardwork (after all, what good is a community without strong HOA rules?), housecleaning, and all of the "work" that the libertard is "too good" to do hisself. This is the point of no return because the libertard is not willing to shell out more than $10/hr of their own money to these workers, but is fully content to raise taxes on others for social programs that will help their struggling brown friends have their "fair share" of the community pot. Unchecked government results in runaway spending that bankrupts the citizens and results in the immediate area becoming a blue-voting trashed hellhole (think Detroit, Baltimore) while the liberals pack up (white flight) and move further out into the new rural areas, and the narrative starts over.

I actually have quite a few gay friends. I don't mind them. It's only a very obvious observation, that certain groups ONLY lean liberal because it benefits some part of their lifestyle and they wouldn't vote Republican simply because of that.

But if you asked them secretly if they wanted to share their hard earned money with those who don't work, they would say now. Also, when was the last time you saw a black man in a green car? Wherever there are diverse populations you'll find liberals, you'll also find disfunctional government, services, and overall crappiness.

Fairfax used to be Republican 20 years ago, but three factors have shifted it left:

1) White Flight...from Montgomery County to Fairfax (and before that PG County). The former Free State white liberal enclave now has many more minority children in it's schools. This tends to lower school standards for a variety of reasons. Witness the massive failure on recent final semester exams across the county as reported by WaPo. As the generations turned overin housing, white liberals moving to Washington loved public schools with great standards and the performance to back it up. Then there are the state colleges. UVa, VT, W&M, JMU, GMU, etc. vs UMD. UMD has it's strengths but it's the flagship of a of a pretty small fleet. Bye-bye MontCo, Hello Fairfax.

2) Immigration: You're new to the country. You're poor or at best lower middle class. One party offers you "free" stuff: food, housing, healthcare, college for your kids, etc. The other party offers you a chance to get a job and make it on your own as so many past immigrants did. You'll do that but hey - it's a no brainer. Vote Democrat and take the "free" stuff too. This also is why Dems can't wait for immigration "reform" nationally. If you can't win elections with leftist rhetoric and governance (Bill Clinton abandoned them remember), import poor people and export jobs. Problem solved. Election won. Mexicali showed the way.

3) The demise of private enterprise in the area. No more AOL, MCI, etc. More government jobs and contractors tends to make people see the world from a statist viewpoint. This Company town just keeps getting bigger.
