Where do you live (to out of towners)

When introducing yourself to someone from out of state, do you ever tell them you live in DC to avoid confusion? I do this all the time.

Beginning with the period when Marion Barry was Mayor, I made it a point to let out-of-towners know that I WAS NOT from DC.

No. I tell them I'm from Virginia, and I don't preface it with northern. I/m probably one of the few around here who does that.

I grew up in NW DC and went to an all black school until I was 15. My family moved to the suburbs when 2 bedrooms was not enough for 5 people. I love the rural areas out west (Blue Ridge, etc) and even now Fairfax is becoming too crowded for me. I tell everyone I am from Fairfax, VA unlike the kids I met in Fairfax, who will tell people they are from DC when in fact, they grew up in the suburbs. I would never choose to live in the city unless I had no options. I would rather break my back on a farm and own my own land than make millions renting in the city.

Everyone everywhere says what city they're from, even if they're from that city's suburbs. This is especially true in large-ish states like Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc. You can't expect someone unfamiliar with the area to have the frame of reference to know where you mean when you say you're from Chantilly, New Kensington, or Euclid, so it's just easier to say DC, Pittsburgh, or Cleveland.

I'M A FIVE-STAR MAN!!

Actually, if you say "Northern Virginia", only the least educated moron in the U.S. will not know it is a rich suburb of DC.

Hence, anyone from Northern Virginia who says he/she is from DC, is a poser.

I used to say 'the DC area'. But with the increased visibility of NOVA, I now say 'Northern Virginia'.

I've never said I'm from DC. DC is the Union capital and I'm a proud Dixie Jihadist.

My desire to avoid appearing a clodhopper is why I always say "NORTHERN Virginia".

Saying "Virginia" by itself sounds too pejorative.

Why would you tell them your from DC? It's like telling them your from Maryland or New Jersey, or France, or Afghanistan, or even worse California.

Proudly state you are from Fairfax County, VA.

Increased visibilty, but most people in other parts of the east coast don't know where "Northern VA" is. The majority of people in the Philly/Pittsburgh area, Boston area, New England, or Jersey won't really know where "Northern virginia" is other than "somewhere down south".

Go out to the west coast, most will have no idea that NoVA is a DC burb.

What is the longest bridge in the world?

The 14th Street Bridge - it connects Virginia with Africa.

Out in California, nearly everybody I talk to when I'm there knows that Northern Virginia is suburban DC.

Maybe your average tweaker or crackhead there might be somewhat unsure about it, but they would probably still get it right.

In southeastern connecticut there is a small city yclept new london.

I"ve got to smile at the city founders' sense of humor, back 300 years ago, throwing in that "new."

As though anyone would confuse it with the original London.

They're both on the Thames. Most of the inhabitants speak some English. That's where the resemblance stops.

That bullshit about East Coasters not knowing about Northern Virginia is preposterous.

Many people I interact with didn't grow up in the US or have never lived in the US - so "East Coast / Washington DC" is about a specific as I can get.

Going any more specific is like saying "Northern Spain" to most people here.

To those that grew up here to know a little geography, I tell them "Outside of DC in the Virginia suburbs." It is all here only because of DC. You have to be either rich or stupid to live in DC itself - there's no safe middle.

Edited to add: I specify Virginia because I want a zero chance of assumption that I live in Maryland.

It all depends on where the person asking you is.. Examples.

1) I'm in Chantilly, and someone asks. I live in Vienna
2) I'm in Southern VA, Maryland, like a 200 mile radius of DC. I'm from Northen VA, Fairfax.
3) Another state, where they most likely don't know the DC area. I'm from DC.
4) Another country, I'm from USA, if they ask, then Washington DC.

+1 TravelMan; good answer. One caveat - - I would never admit I lived in Vienna.

Which part of DC? Georgetown? SW? SE? NW? Anacostia? I actually lived in the "bad" parts of DC (Anacostia) and I doubt many folks in the Northern Virginia area have even stepped foot in the "bad" parts let alone know where anything in DC is.

OP is a complete loser (or troll). If you're out of area friends and relatives can't figure out exactly where you live (duh, ever hear of Google Maps and other geographic aids) they must be as fucking dumb as you are!

That's pretty much how I handle it. Despite what others have said, I don't get the impression that "Northern Virginia" is widely known across the country as "suburban DC" (shit, most Americans can't locate Canada on a map). In my experience it seems like folks south of here know where it is, but not so much when you go north. Head 2 hours north to PA and most people won't know that "No Va." means "DC area", and I travel out to the west coast every year and wouldn't think to tell people "no. virginia" because they most likely wont know what that means. People flying in to Dulles or DCA are "going to DC", not "going to Northern Virginia".

Back in the day, I would name whatever country that wouldn't get me "kilt".
The US wasn't getting many yearbook signatures.
