Fans could soon be shouting the name of a former Herndon High Hornet at major league baseball games.

The Augusta Free Press reported Monday that rising James Madison University freshman and Herndon High School graduate Ky Parrott was selected this past Saturday in the 26th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Press said Parrott has "until July 12 to determine whether to sign [the] MLB contract or maintain the JMU commitment that [he] signed in November."

Parrott's contract offer was from the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Press touted Parrott's impressive history playing sports for Herndon High.

"The 5'9", 180-pound center fielder just finished his senior season playing for former JMU standout Greg Miller at Herndon High School. He hit .291 while leading the team with four home runs. He added 16 runs and 11 RBIs while being named First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region. Parrott was also the starting quarterback for the Hornets as a sophomore and junior," the publication wrote.

Why shouldn't he sign? After all he was the 26th overall pick! No, wait, a 26th round pick...

Not likely. He hit .291 in high school. On the other hand, he must have some potential, in that MLB scouts rarely give the time of day to anyone not hitting over .400 in high school.

The likelihood of a 26th round pick making it to even AAA are super low. Congrats to the kid though and it is his call whether to make a go at it or not. He can always go to college and not play ball if the minors don't work out too, but a 26th round contract is worth squat.

26th round. Might as well just continue to play at JMU and finish out college. There's no pay at that level.

26th round - get an education. NO siging bonus, no nothing.

See if you can get drafted as a junior or senior after playing well in college.

If I were this kids Dad I would have him go pro NOW! How he got drafted I have no idea, not even First Team Northern Region. batted below 400 at High School level with 4 HRs. He will never get drafted again. Go take a chance at Single A ball he can always go back to school.
