We are considering three different houses - one in the Lee HS boundary one in W Springfield and one in Lorton for S County. Any thoughts on what school is the best?

Of those three high schools I would choose west Springfield. Second choice south county. Wouldn't consider lee.

All the schools mentioned are shit, so just buy the house you like the best.

I would definitely choose West Springfield! South County would be second and stay away from Lee. No matter what you hear...WS is a terrific school. Good luck.

Stay away from South County. Administration could not care less about individual students. That place almost destroyed my straight A honors kid. No counseling and when it gets bad, their answer is to throw out the grade, a full year of education. There are a few great teachers but Malinda Paige (math) is the devil. She is belittling, insulting, degrading, and just can't teach. Schools always back even the terrible teachers. So we moved into West Springfield and at least the administration seems to care. The student body is a world away from SC. A 3rd world.

West Springfield used to be a good school back in the 70's and 80's but today it has gone downhill. The building is falling apart, the neighborhoods are getting old, and lots of foreigners go there now. Anyone who recommends it is living in the past.

South County could have been a great school but the school board members Dan Stork and Brad Center played politics and created horrible boundaries. Lots of school board members did not want it to become the elite school it could have been. Instead it's got a lot of ghetto kids and rednecks. The Route 1 (Hegel Circle) and Mason Neckers who belong at Hayfield now go to SC. Bad decisions lead to bad schools.

Lastly, Lee is horrible and don't even consider it.

We have a rising 10th grader who is pretty happy at South County, so I'd say South County or West Springfield would both be fine. I wouldn't recommend Lee.

Lee has been redone and has come a long way since it used to be.

edit: I will say that Lee isnt the COMPLETE shithole ppl are painting it to be - it was pretty bad a decade ago - but nowadays it's pretty much on par with the other two in terms of drama. to be honest, I'd expect someone new to the area to be more comfy using this thing than someone who's been here awhile....................

Lee is heavily populated with hispanics and there is a strong gang presence in the area. Within the last year or so there was even a big bust associated with gang pimped prostitution of local teen girls. It has the IB program(http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/ibprogram.shtml).

West Springfield is very diverse in races, has a lot of people that have been in the area since they were kids, so it can have more of a sense of community than you'd necessarily expect in the suburbs. Though they did just have a trio of teen boys convicted of sexting. It has the AP program(http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/advep.shtml).

South County, new school, lots of new residents, sits next to the old Lorton prison, which for the most part is just getting covered in weeds. Makes it a great spot to go smoke and hang out. They seem to be having the typical growing pains of a new school and neighborhood. It's full of a lot of rich spoiled kids, but then a lot of Fairfax County is like that. It has the AP program (http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/advep.shtml) .

They're all competent schools. Drive through the neighborhoods you're considering during the evening and weekends to see what the community is like and if it fits with your ideal.

Lets start calling areas by their NYC names

I suggest starting with south of ox road being renamed Soox.

I'd take SoCo over Lee and WSHS. I have experience with all three. Look at their websites to see what they offer for you own children. I value safety, less gangs, competetive sports and accessable administration.
