Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
- Sam Huff and Frank Herzog doing Redskin games. Sonny, Sam, and Frank were the best announcers. Folks would turn down the volume on the TV and listen to to the radio.
Mosquito spraying, long car trips with my dad while he chain smoked, the sounds of my mom getting slapped around, teachers smacking my knuckles with a ruler.....oh the memories......

Being able to get past the security checkpoint at Dulles without a plane ticket so I could wish a loved one a safe journey AND watch their plane take off from the terminal.

.. how about the Eastern Shuttle - from DC to NY - where you just boarded the plane without a ticket or boarding pass and took a seat. After take-off, the cabin crew would go up the aisle and collect the money. I think the fare was something like $50 one-way.

I moved out of Fairfax, VA headed for Durham, NC back in 1996. I had tears in my eyes the day I moved.
I moved back here in 2010. Thankfully, the old town hasn't changed much. It's grown, but it's still Fairfax.
I do miss TT Reynolds. I'm glad Tastee 29 is still there, but I haven't been there since I moved back here. I bet that 29 has become some preserved historic marker, not just an old greasy spoon VA diner like the days at midnight when my friends and I would go there for eggs and bacon.
I miss GMU. Not Mason, but GMU, back when it was some po-dunk little school that looked up to James Madison. Still, I do love that fact that I can crack jokes about the Harrisonburgers at JMU and they can't say a dang thing because "Mason" is some serious school now.
A long time ago, back when my parents moved here, Fairfax was a small town. I mean reallly, it was a small little town. It grew up, but it didn't really lose that small town feel to it.
It's a great town, Fairfax. I'll probably have to leave again before it's all over, but I love this little place.

I don't remember when they collected money on the plane but I did take it a lot when you could just walk on and take whatever seat after paying at the gate or kiosk. They were doing that at least up until they tightened things up after 9/11.
National (sorry, it was National too long to me to call it Reagan) was great back then. Other than at rush hour, I could leave the house 20-30 minutes before the flight was scheduled to leave, find a spot to park no problem, grab some coffee, and be on the plane with time to spare. 15 minutes if I wanted to speed and hustle to the gate.

^ Duh. It was Delta at that point. Same route but Eastern was long gone by then.
Trees! and being able to drive anywhere in this area before 10:00pm without all this horrendus traffic. Damn yuppie swine in their white BMW's have ruined this area.

You just have to know where to look. Adult Swin on Cartoon Network has some good ones. They show Fox shows like Family Guy and American Dad, but also have several original shows. I highly recommend The Venture Brothers. If you ever watched Johnny Quest as a kid, you'll love it. They totally take off on that show and there's even a character who shows up from time to time who looks like a grown up Johnny Quest, strung out, of course. Other decent cartoons on Cartoon Network are Regular Show and Adventure Time.
- Ken Beatrice was AMAZING on the air. He knew EVERYTHING about sports. And he was so respectful towards callers. I wasn't a sports-junkie but I'd listen to his show.

I do not miss having people floating around the waiting area that had no business being there. Much safer now.

Sorry, Lolly, but bn's right - it was better before the towel heads ruined the friendly skies.
That was Washington to me. Trumbull and Core on afternoon drive. We moved here in the early 1980s and it was their show that got me acclimated. Where the heck was Baileys Crossroads, Darnstown, Vienna? What's with this inner/outer loop thing? What was going on at the Kennedy Center, etc..

I always liked their El Fong Burrito Mexican/Chinese restaurant ads.
Calvin and Hobbes. And my expectation that the world was endless and endlessly interesting. I was expecting Jonny Quest, what I found was Johnny Rockets.
Walking up the street to play video games at 7/11. Walking the twenty minutes it took to get our swim club for swim practice, followed by tennis lessons, and then swimming all day until we were picked up by Mom in time for dinner. Our lunch was packed, and we were given money for the Ice Cream Man. #ChocoTacos. Kick the Can and Flashlight tag. Big Wheels races, and later ten speed races. Water balloon fights. Sledding down the hill at our school on cafeteria trays. Kickball, Dodgeball, and roller skating in the school gym.
About 10 years back Burger King had those tacos or a close copy. After a few months they were gone, they probably sold too many taking away from burgers and fries. I know that's all I bought.
JIB was in Annandale open 24-7 where Popeyes is on Rt 236, McLean Rt123, Merrifield at 29 and Gallows, And Herndon on the main drag.
I am also missing all of what has been posted and in fact, as I was scrolling down, some of my ideas are things that others are missing.
Some of the things I am missing (in addition to all of what has been posted) includes Thelma's ice cream in Great Falls when Thelma was there--it was this crazy thrift shop, convenience shop and ice cream shop all put together in a unique way.
I miss Farrels ice cream shop in Tysons--when Tysons was small. We would go there after swim meets and when I got older, I would go there with friends.
I miss MTV when videos were just shown. I miss "Friday Night Videos" that was shown on Friday nights late (or, late for me as a youth). I would have my VCR ready to tape videos. And yes, Thriller was highly anticipated.
I miss the more innocent times. When I had pen pals. When my siblings and I would run around bare foot and catch fireflys. When, as a child, we used to play 'ghost in the grave yard', kick ball, kick the can, and other games in the neighborhood and all of the kids would play and this would span many neighbors yard. Often this would be at dusk and dark. We would run and scream and hide. You just dont see that anymore.
I miss pool parties at my neighborhood pool growing up. These would be highly anticipated and were at night. I remember loving to see the lights in the pool at night. They would throw pennies and they would do a count down and everyone would jump in and try to get the most pennies.
I miss tanning without guilt LOL. I dont tan anymore and I am blessed that I have little damage or wrinkles but I just loved the look of having a tan.
I miss summer fruit that actually tasted like fruit. The fruit nowadays is mostly not good.
I miss the time when candy and junkfood was not accessable everywhere. Candy was really a rare treat. I remember anticipating my easter basket because we just did not see or get candy except on certain holidays or special occasions. Nowadays, it is everywhere and it is just 'bla'.
I miss the goodyear blimp. This used to fly over my neighborhood in the summer time growing up. We kids would always scream in awe when we would hear the 'blimp sound'. We would scan the sky and sure enough, the blimp would come into view. At night, the blimp would do a light show that was just awesome. Really really awesome.
There is so much that I miss. Really, I wish there was a way to go back.
How old are you 101?
Did you fight for the north or south?

Thelmas Ice cream in Great Falls I remember a place up there my boss always had to stop when we were in that area this was 1975-77 a little old lady ran the place.
Hector's pizza was the best. I totally agree with this.

Those still exist you know. There's a Friendly's in Burke and one in Sterling (5 mins from Herndon).
And the food and ice cream is pretty much how I remember it from childhood. You can take that however you'd like.
