A retired Fairfax County elementary school principal, scout leader and Clifton resident has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor at Burke Lake Park, according to the Virginia State Police.

Thomas H. Clement, 62, was arrested without incident on Thursday, May 23. According to police, Clement is accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old boy during an overnight church camping trip at Burke Lake Park in Oct. 2009. Clement is a member of Centerpoint Church in Fair Oaks and spent years as the leader of a church scout group.

The case is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office. Virginia State Police are asking anyone with information related to this incident or Clement to contact Special Agent J.B. Root at (540) 829-7744.

Clement, who worked in the Loudoun and Fairfax County Public School systems for over 20 years, was most recently the principal of Bull Run Elementary from 1999 until his retirement in 2006. He is currently the executive director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University, which conducts adult education.

Clement was also the assistant principal at London Towne Elementary School, Centreville Elementary School and was the principal at Canterbury Woods Elementary School. His career began in 1975, where he taught middle school in Loudoun County. He also taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade for more than a decade in Fairfax County.

Clement has been praised for his leadership abilities.

"He's very kid-oriented," said a Bull Run parent in a 2006 Connection story on Clement's retirement. "He's not afraid to do lots of new programs, such as geography bees and plays, and he's always there at every activity. He is so supportive of the kids."

I am in total agreement. When it turns out that the minor in this case is the guilty one, Thomas Clement will be left with a wrongful blight upon his character, which is spotless and admirable.

The media loves to use the term "alleged," but the truth is that they control the powers of conviction by the public. They need to be judicious in using that power, and avoid ruining the lives of innocent people who are wrongly accused. But in this case, it's too late already.

Put yourself in Thomas Clement's shoes: some kid from the past conjured up a story, the police conducted an "investigation," and the next thing you know, you're on the 5 o'clock news and in The Washington Post.

That's the American way of justice these days. When the kid comes clean, he'll get psychological counseling and sympathy. But Thomas Clement will pay for this for the rest of his life -- unjustly.

Tom is an excellent man and a great leader I know him and he was a leader of a group in which he taught us Honor dignity and respect. Clement pleaded guilty on two counts of aggravated sexual battery (he sexually molested two boys) and will get anywhere from 1-40 years in prison (1-20 years per count concurrently or 2-40 years if stacked, depending on what the judge decides). Should we take a poll on the length of his sentence. I say 10-15 years.

From what I've heard, 10-15 sounds about right.

I really feel these offenders deserve life. There is no "cure," no way to get better, and if released from jail they usually come out even worse.

The most humane solution would be to shoot him dead. He'll be a natural target while in jail due to the nature of his crimes, and a likely suicide candidate as a result of that attention.

Sentencing is this Friday and we are all hoping that he gets at least 20 years. Would be interesting to hear from some staff that was in any of his schools. Law suits soon to follow.
