What do you think it is & How much is it worth?

I found this today by the curb in Annandale. It is a large water color, 27 X 23 with frame.
The glass was broken so they threw it out. I think it is about 100 yrs old.

What do you think??

46 stars (I think) - that places it just about 100 years ago: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagfact.html

I don't see any artist mark. Could it be hidden by the frame?

That's a fireplace in the background? Right?

It has water damage it's not worth anything. Plus, just going on the fuzzy pic ( I know) it looks like an artist print not an original.

It looks like a hand painted photograph, probably taken some time between 1877 and 1890 or so, because the flag appears to be a 38 star flag and the child is dressed in a sailor suit, which was popular fashion for little boys at the time.

It was probably fairly expensive at the time it was made (likely $25 - $50 in a time when the daily wage was about $2.00). I'd estimate it between $300 - $500, although if you can tie it to a specific, notable photographer or it's of an eminent person, this will of course send the value up.

Looks like an old photograph that was painted over to colorize it. I've seen this done with some 19th century photos. So yeah, it's probably pretty old. An antiques dealer could tell you if it was worth anything.

I can't get past the frame. Love it. I have a frame just like this one in my house that was in my grandma's family for at least one generation. The frame alone is about one hundred years old. Keep in mind that families often had one or two very nice, expensive frames and they'd often swap out newer, updated paintings.

Get an estimate...on the frame, too.

I would try to Google images and see what you can find. Intriguing. Good find.

I would like to know the story behind it. Maybe you can go on Antiques Roadshow.

One change to my estimate. The flag is not the 38-star flag of 1877 to 1890, but the 45-star flag of 1896 to 1907. The 38-star flag only had 5 rows, while the one the child is holding has 6.

It was paid for by an upper middle class family; probably the father was in the professional class. You can tell because the frame is painted, not gilt, and it's a painted photograph rather than an actual painting, both of which would have been paid for by a rich family but beyond the means of a middle-class one.

I count 47 stars which would date the flag to around 1910/1911. (Arizona was 48 in 1912)

I don't think that's a date. It's either an "item" number, like a stock number, or copy number. If it said "3419 of 4000" you might have something, otherwise, it looks like a mass produced decorator piece.

How are you getting these numbers? There are five rows of eight stars and one row of six which makes 46 stars.

Could be a oil painting by Joseph Joe Pickett 1849-1919, kind of fits his style of painting. Doubt it though, only 5 of his painting have ever been recovered and dont beleive one would find it in a dumpster. He always painted pictures of historic events.

Wow, That would be great if it was a painting from Joseph Joe Pickett from Pa. It should be in a Museum & I could be rich!! HaHa. I don't think it is but I don't know what it is.

There was never an official 47-star flag, and pictures of 47-star flags are extremely rare. The United States only adopts a new flag on July 4, so the flag progression was directly from 46 to 48 stars, as New Mexico became a state January 6, 1912, and Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912.

I based my guess on the flag's date on the fact that there are 6 rows of stars, with there clearly being a different number of stars in the bottom two rows, and the bottom having fewer stars. The only flag that has this arrangement and seems to fit into the time period was the 45 star flag. (http://www.usflag.org/history/the45starflag.html) On the 46-star flag, the bottom row had the larger number of stars, with 8 on the bottommost and 7 on the row above it.

The name Pickett might be the name of the creator, or it could be related to the Pickett family that achieved minor prominence in Fairfax County (for example, Pickett Road is named after that family) in the last century. The 3419 isn't a date, I'm fairly certain. Maybe an item number put there by the maker.

I disagree that it's an oil painting, and stand by my assertion that it's a hand-painted photograph.

The finder might be well-served to get in touch with the Historical Society of Fairfax County http://www.fairfaxhistoricalsociety.org/ and Historic Fairfax City http://www.historicfairfax.org/, because they might be able to discern if there is a link to the Pickett family.

It looks like a litho or watercolor. I haven't seen a hand tinted photo of that size. Judging by the frame, a 100 years old is about right. Name and numbers probably don't mean anything. Usually notes about the subject matter are made towards the top of a piece of artwork. You should be able to easily tell if its a photo or a watercolor. Probably a litho, with frame and art in good condition a few hundred dollars. However, very good subject matter: children & patriotic themes, adds interest and value. If it was original art or photo, would add significant value. You should be able to tell by feeling and looking at it under magnification

You are seeing things - as BEH noted there are 5 rows of 8 and one row of 6 making 46 stars.

The actual arrangement of stars on flags was not officially "controlled" until after the time of 46 stars:

>>> "...1912 June 24, President Taft signs Executive Order which establishes
>>> proportions of the flag and specifies arrangement and orientation of the stars..."

which means the stars could be arranged in any manner until that time.

What stands out, his thumb?

And one more thing I noticed, the top row/stipe is white. All the flags on the timeline site have the top row as being red.

Why is that? I have a bunch of frames like that, bought at a going-out-of-business sale, and they were all probably made within the past 10-15 years. How can anyone tell how old it is from that photo?

If you'll check the responses - there were at LEAST a couple with actual value in them.

THAT'S why you ask a message board "like this".

Lots of talk about the flag & his hands, He has four fingers and one thumb on his left hand. It is bigger then the right. I think the shoes are from about 1900. I think it maybe painted from a photo.
