Old Safeway Centreville

Was driving through the parking lot where the old Safeway was near Sully Station. Noticed the lease sign down in the window! Anyone know if something is moving in there?

Obvious answer obvious some third world bazaar loaded with expired foods, warm drinks and suspicious looking meats.

I'm walking up to the Post Office tomorrow so will skim on by and see if there are any building permits or anything else in the windows.

Nope - the windows have nothing on them (at all). The door had one of those real estate lock boxes hanging from it. When I came back from the PO a guy walked out so I asked him what's happening - he didn't REALLY seem to know what he was talking about but answered that "eventually" something was going in, then volunteered "maybe another asian store". But I certainly wouldn't make any bets based off his responses (the guy looked like he came from Culpeper or somewhere similar).

But, no, no "For Lease" sign in the window...

How can you tell if a person is from Culpeper?

Please no Asian stores, we need a real grocery store! Harris Teeters or something....like that!

Though I =much= prefer asian grocery stores to the non-asian type because they have, typically, very alrge produce and seafood departments, not to mention all the cool ingredients encessary for a well-rounded home-cooked food experience, what I'd like to see happen is a subdividing of that space with a smallish food market installed in the end-space - something that carries the staples (like bread, milk, butter, etc) but nothing much more.

A major food market in this location is simply destined to fail due to lack of traffic and the outrageously poor design of the shopping center itself (discussed elsewhere).

Stay tuned. Another Asian grocer is closing the deal on this property. Fresh bamboo shoot, water chestnut, straw mushroom and LOTS of garlic will be available after the renovation and infiltration are complete. And, they'll sell Coke and Doritos, too.

Was over at the shopping center about a hour ago and something is going on over there! Lights were on and boxes piled up by the window! Some older man was peeking in the window and I asked him if he knew what was going in there? He seems to think a Asian Market!

Too bad. It will follow Grand Village rapidly, unless it was given lease terms that make it essentially zero cost (to make the whole shopping center more attractive as an "anchor store"). This shopping center historically AND currently pretty much serves only a small population of people RIGHT from the immediate neighborhood only so, unlike the Stone Road Giant, for example, there simply isn't any customer traffic to support such a large store.

It would have been MUCH more successful as a dinky Ma-n-Pa store selling staples with something else occupying the major portion of that space.

Ah well, at least for a part of a year there will be easy-to-get-to asian products!
