Is Paul VI Catholic High School a dumping ground?
Posted by: dwu ()

Is it true that Paul VI (Fairfax,VA) is the school where parents usually will dump thier kids at if they have been expelled from the FCPS school system, caused too much trouble at a FCPS school, or have behavorial/delinquency problems?

Yes and no. I think they won't take the worst of the worst kids from FCPS. However, there are a lot of kids who I guess you could say are "at risK" (ie-haven't been caught by the law yet) who their parents will put at PVI thinking that will straighten them up. Def saw lots of those. They never change, by the way.

Of course it's true. The school is full of catholics, the people responsible for more evil in the history of the world than any other.

+1

All Catholics should be ashamed for the continued cover-up of crimes against children.

Wow, these kids must be hundreds of years old to have been responsible for all the evil in the history of the world. You think they'd have finished high school by now?

I moved to Oakton in 1987 and the fact that kids that were no longer allowed in FFX County Schools went to Paul the VI was a fact back then. Why would things change?

The non Catholic rate to attend PVI is now up over $17,000 a year. Be wary of any kid whose parents are willing to pay that, because there is a good reason for it. The school is basically a mix of psycho Catholics, rich snobs with Catholic backgrounds, and kids who for whatever reason can't make it in normal school: Learning, behavioral, emotional, substance problems, etc. The good side to all of this is that the really bad kids don't last very long there, and move on to the next dumping ground--military or alternative school.

Obviously you guys have nothing better to do than to bash a school you don't know anything about? Some people actually like it there. and the fact that that one person used the "N word" to describe my friends and classmates is disgraceful. and no i'm not black i'm white.

Spoken like a bunch of asshole morons who never went there! wow, such bullshit.

OP - please don't listen to these idiots! Yes PVI will accept some kids, a SMALL percentage, who have been asked to leave public schools. But it's mainly for upper class/upper middle class kids whose parents don't mind shelling out big bucks for their kids to go to an excellent school within a christian environment.

Yes they recruit athletes for the basketball team and give them a free education. But you know what? That is what you HAVE to do to compete in the Catholic league. You think Dematha and Gonzaga don't do the same??

The chair is front of your computer is home to one of the most worthless and cowardly pieces of shit in the county. PVI is rated year after year among the Top 50 most successful catholic high schools for academics. You couldn't hold a candle to the average PVI student when it comes to smarts and savvy. I bet you give one of the worst blow-jobs around too. Even with all that practice.

With all the posts about priests abusing boys, I had to say something. It is a terrible thing that those children were abused yes, but to say that the entire catholic church is based on abusing children is retarded. There is only one priest at PVI at any given time. He teaches religion classes and says mass daily. As far as being a dumping ground for kids that got expelled from other schools, that may be true. I remember when i graduated from pvi and went to college i talked to classmates that went to FCPS and they couldn't do half the academic work because the high school they went to didn't prepare them for college. PVI is a tougher school academically then FCPS and keeps kids more in line. Do they have some shit bag faculty? of course, every organization in America you will find some bad apples, but all of these comments about how PVI and Catholics in general are pieces of shit is pretty childish if you never went to school there.

It's not worth it. Send your kids to public school FOR FREE. It's better than paying $ for awful uniforms, warped ethics and cultish sports teams. Kids are no smarter there than anywhere else, and very few end up going to great colleges. Most muddle their way through and end up at places like GMU, JMU, Radford and the like. I'm a graduate. I can tell you that there were some real authoritarian jerks there, some of whom went down in flames. Just start questions about the school's history, and you'll soon find out.

Why can't the haters on this thread respond without being so trashy and using so much profanity. It doesn't justify your response in any way. Let's be more civil whether you like my opinion or not.

@felix franklin: Here is ONE of the sources (psychology.com) that I got the 2 - 4 percent of priests OVER the decades that have been accused.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/all-about-sex/201003/beyond-bad-apple-priests-who-the-pedophiles-really-are

About the 10th paragraph down in the article states "I hope the Catholic Church can end priestly child sexual abuse. But the NSHS shows that priest account for only a tiny fraction of this problem.".

Say all the hate you want about the Catholic church as you will not be able to bring it down. It has existed for 2,000 years and Jesus prophesied that the "gates of hell will not prevail over His church".

Hey, where does it say that only 2-4% of priests are pedophiles? In fact, this article doesn't support your assertion at all. It says that only a small percentage of all sexual abuse of minors is committed by priests. Well, big whoop. That's not news. Priests are a tiny fraction of the population, and only some have contact with minors. Look at it like this--if priests only committed 1% of all sexual abuse, but a high percentage of priests were engaging in that 1% of abuse, then the church was covering it up by paying hush money and moving abusive priests from parish to parish, that would be a massive scandal. WHICH IS WHY IS SUCH A MASSIVE SCANDAL. Can't believe you're defending the indefensible.

The Catholic Church's own study concluded that 4% of priests over a 60 year period were accused of sexual abuse, a very high percentage of which was substantiated or very likely to be true. That doesn't mean that only 4% of priests were pedophiles. In fact, it's fair to say a much higher percentage were pedophiles, given that so much sexual abuse is unreported, especially in an authoritarian institution like the CC. So yeah, keep on defending the church. Really smart.

Don't tell me to shut the "f" up. This thread started off concerning Paul VI which makes it a Catholic issue. As I said, the psychologytoday.com site is ONE of the many sources. But I refuse to go any further but I know what to expect in reply. No matter what anyone comments that closely resembles any defense for the Catholic church, will get an onslaught of profanity and trash talk.

Obviously the Catholic church does MUCH more good than evil since it has existed for 2,000 years. Many have tried to bring it down but failed. SO WILL YOU FAIL!

Do you know Stalin recruited men to become priests so that their bad behavior will cause the downfall of Catholicism? It was a good idea, but his attempt eventually failed. This is what the church is up against. But Jesus Christ, our savior for our pool souls has said "THE GATES OF HELL WILL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST HIS CHURCH". Praise God! Repent of your sins and trust in Jesus Christ for eternity in heaven. Amen, Amen!

Your attitude is typical of a lot of families that send their kids there (head-up-their-ass snobs). Along with the hyper-religious element, it's the only reason I'd give to avoid the place.

I was one of those at-risk kids and graduated from there in the mid 90s. I'm glad my parents shelled out the bread to send me there and you're wrong. Kids at that age CAN change and the discipline and structure they offered helps. It doesn't work everytime, but it definitely gives the kid a chance to not completely F up their life.

What are you doing now? What are your colleagues doing? How did it change your life for the better. Were there a lot of kids getting in trouble there?

This has to be one of the sillier comments I've seen in a while:

"Obviously the Catholic church does MUCH more good than evil since it has existed for 2,000 years."

So am I to understand that the length of an institution's existence if proof of its goodness? Capital punishment has been around for 10K years, so obviously it's five times a good as Catholicism. Judaism is 2.5 times better than the church. And don't forget China, 5K years of unbroken history. Clearly, a society brimming with goodness (I think Mao killed 60 million people by himself).

Jesus has been dead for nearly 2,000 years, the Catholic church did a terrible job of dealing with the priest-abuse issue as it began to come to light, and PVI is still quite a good academic school with a very strong basketball program.

Most of the imbeciles in this thread are meanwhile municipal-grade waste suitable for immediate shredding and providing to citizens for use as garden mulch.

The Church has more good than evil over the 2,000 years of existence. None of the aforementioned powers that "Go back to kindergarten" stated above were prophesized by anyone that they were going to exist for thousands of years. In this case Jesus Christ, prophesied 2,000 years ago, during that time (33 AD), he had maybe a few hundred followers, stated "the "gate of hell will not prevail against His church". Jesus also said "He is the Light, the Truth, and the Way, that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life in heaven". Of course, Satan believes in Jesus, so you need a little more than just a belief in Him.

Yes, you can say that I am a Jesus zealot and His church. I have reason to.

There was a time in my life (5 years ago) I used to hate and persecute the Catholic church much like you guys are doing. I also developed a serious addiction to narcotics (pain killers) where I did 2 stints of rehab to no success afterwards. I was snorting well over 30+ pills daily. I became very frightened (even suicidal) of losing everything and reached out to God for help.

I promised to start going back to church (as I born Catholic) and I started praying to Saint Maximilian Kolbe (who is the patron saint of people with addictions to drugs). Maximilian Kolbe (google him) was a priest who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi German death camp of Auschwitz during World War II. There are a lot of priest like this, you just don't hear about them in the media. After two months of praying, I was delivered from my addiction, ON MY OWN, by given the power to get thru the withdrawals and cravings. Because of this, I'm appreciative and dedicated to Jesus and His church.

Lately I was asked by a doctor if I wanted pain killers due to severe back pain I was getting, and I said "no".

By faithfully going to church, I receive supernatural power from God's grace to overcome obstacles in my daily life. Humans can't change for the better on their own. They need the power from God to do so. Now I'm surrounded by people who've had similar testimonies. I'm not afraid anymore to reach out to the light that God gives to open our eyes.

It's all Dumbo and the Magic Feather. The power is never external. It always comes from inside yourself. If fairy tale beliefs help you to find and tap into that power, fine. But they are still just fairy tales.

Well, I'm happy for you. I'm glad you're not suffering through addition anymore and I admire your faith. Just know that when I'm critical of the church and religion in general, I'm not attacking you. Nor am I attacking anyone who has genuine faith. I' being critical (in the intellectual sense) and not trying to be a dick. I'm glad you're better, I mean that.

@stinkwinky: Thank you. I appreciate what you said and for your professional comment even though we disagree on church/religion matters. Can't say that about others who must insist on using profanity and trashy statements.

@Actually: To comment on your statement, "The power is never external. It always comes from inside yourself.". What human would go to the streets of Calcutta, pick up the poorest of the poor (people with diseases, urine drenched clothes, some with no legs, etc.) and give them shelter, food, medicine, and most importantly, RESPECT, up until their dying day? That person is Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her religious institute, Missionaries of Charity. I know I couldn't do it. Could you and have you? She did so, in the power of God she received through her devotion to Jesus Christ. This my friend, is no fairy tale.

Now, if by chance, someone performs extraordinary great things, but doesn't believe in God, then he/she does it for the glory of himself/herself...which is pride. But if one does extraordinary things and does them for the glory of God, then the works are done in humility and humbleness. Big difference.

In actuality, God gives the strength to the non-believer too as a test to see if he/she gives the glory to himself/herself or to God, as a test of faith.

Wouldn't say its a dumping ground at all. I graduated from there in 2009, went to tech already finished with my first semester with all the AP classes I took. Now I work for an engineering firm making 74k a year. if you ask me they did just alright. Me and my sisters all graduated from PVI ( they're older) and are all well respected members of society now. However my friends that i went to middle school (irving), i cannot say they're doing so well coming from FCPS public schooling.

It's always been a slightly more demanding private school with a weird combination of upper, middle class, and less well off kids recruited from DC. It's not a terrible place, but it's not worth the tuition given what FCPS is capable of imparting.

The school building is historic because it was the old Fairfax High School. It will not be torn down, but there is an interesting idea to convert it into upscale senior living. Imagine... You graduate from Fairfax HS in the 60s and now you can spend your golden years there too. The historic school conversion to retirement homes has been done with incredible success all over America and property values will surely rise.

How do you know that the catholic church is gods church? Look at the history of the catholic church. The Inquisition, praying to saints, European kings in the middle ages having to get the popes blessing before assuming power, and many other actions that go way against my biblical interpretation.
The catholic church is run by man. That's where gets shady. Man historically does all that's possible to control others around him and twists religion to achieve his goal.
Power corrupts. And the pope holds power.he is human. I dont need a middleman between me and god. Go straight to the source

How do you know there's a breeze blowing - you can't see it, you can't hear it, but you can feel it and you can see how it's affecting the things around you. That's what experiencing God is. But it takes courage to start looking for Him. Many people grew up being in charge of their own life, but allowing God to call the shots is much different. Asking God to show Himself is a great first step.

So, if one were to take that great first step (asking god to show himself), 1. how does one go about that, and, would he (god) show himself?

Or, would something happen (like the sun comes up tomorrow) and whoever asked for god to show himself, that person would need to say, oh, I see, that is god showing himself?
