TJ, which used to be the #1 ranked high school in the country has now fallen to 4th. I think we have too many Asians in there. Thoughts?

It started downhill when liberals demanded it be more diverse. So they lowered the entry standards and this is the result. In maybe ten years it will just be another bloated failed experiment in liberal social engineering.

Asians are great at rote education. Look at the economy of China for example. They are experts at stealing technology and products, reverse-engineering them and then mass producing knock-offs with $1/day slave labor. But they don't invent anything. They wait for the US to invent it after spending billions of $$$ in research and trail-and-error testing, then spend $50K (or 5 nights of bliss with a Chicom female agent) to buy the plans from some low-level plant worker.

TJ is the same. The dinks are great at memorizing things, so they excel in elementary and junior high. But once they get into the upper parts of HS in the advanced programs, where you have to demonstrate extraneous thought and pulling diverse concepts together to form higher concepts, they drool and slobber like special ed students.

That's the way it is.

First, I've come to realize that there's no need to worry about TJ's demographics or success. There are plenty of places and ways for a child to get a good education around here and it mostly relies on parents' initiative.

But regarding the "slippage" of TJ to 4th place and the explanation that "liberals" have watered it down; @the truth is, how do you explain the increasing percentage of Asian enrollment at TJ, if FCPS gave in to liberal demands for greater diversity?

The liberal vs. conservative stuff is hogwash, so is the notion that Asian students are inherently higher performing. TJ, like any school, would benefit from greater cultural diversity. It doesn't have to sacrifice standards to achieve that, its administration just has to be involved in the FCPS system and work harder to prepare Northern Virginia students to be successful at TJ.

The compass, gunpowder, paper, printing, are all pretty revolutionary inventions from China. More recently, Chinese scientists worked on the Manhattan Project and innovations like hybrid rice and bovine insulin have come from China. I mean, Europe and the U.S. have certainly produced more groundbreaking inventions and provide better creative environments than Asia has, but there's really no point in making comparisons like that. Unless you're trying to prove that one country or culture is "better" than the other, a pretty silly thing to waste your time on.

Nice try but they have never lowered the standards. Take a look at the WHO gets in before and after the changes, and you will see they are about the same. I'm not just talking racial demographics, but also geographic and economic.

I'm sure the slopes were cutting edge 1000 years ago. Not so much in the past 5 or 6 centuries though.

And just for the record, the US produces over 80% of all new patented inventions every year and have been the leader in invention for the past 100 years. That's what capitalism will do for ya.

Asians, of course, are not the problem. If you look behind the curtain, it is a sure bet that the negro population increased at a higher rate than the asian population, thus explaining the lower overall scholastic performance.

Ummmmm...

"Sixty-six percent, or 317, of the students admitted are of Asian descent and 123 or 25.6 percent are white. A total of 18 students, about 3.8 percent, are listed as from a multiracial or other background. So all 5 black kids brought down the average? Yeah right try again!

Bottom Line:

Dallas' TAG school has cultivated a diverse student population and at the same time maintained high standards of education and achievement. Although white and Asian students are overrepresented at the school, while black, Hispanic, and American Indian students are underrepresented in proportion to state and district populations, the makeup of the school enables and almost guarantees students to interact with peers from different backgrounds. This is also reflected in the numbers of economically disadvantaged students: 31.3% in 2006, 30.7% in 2012. The district should work harder to prepare especially American Indian students but also black and Hispanic students for success at the TAG school. Finally, the report doesn't provide application vs. matriculation statistics and so the public is unable to judge the proportion of applicants vs. enrollees from the various demographic groups.

There are many other factors that go into a student's success: parental involvement, teacher to student ratio, attitude of the administration, funding, etc. But this school shows that you can have a high achieving *and diverse* population of students in both cultural and economic terms; and at that, TJ fails miserably.

Looking at those numbers, white and Hispanic enrollment is holding steady, while African American enrollment has been dropping precipitously and Asian (including Pacific Islander) enrollment increasing at a rate almost in reverse proportion to the drop in African American enrollment. I would regard that as a disturbing trend, but we need one more factor: community demographics. If blacks are moving away from the area and Asians moving in, then the change would appear reasonable. The data doesn't have county stats, but does have district and state. The school demographics in relation to the district numbers are horrible. District demographics:

Analysis:

White population, both district and state, has remained steady as has TAG school enrollment. But related to state and especially district population, white students are vastly overrepresented.
Hispanic population in the district has remained steady and slightly increased in the state (6% and 5.5% respectively); TAG school enrollment has remained steady indicating a slight Hispanic underrepresentation. Either way, school enrollment falls far below demographic representation.
African American population, both district and state, has slightly declined (6.4% and 1.9% respectively) as TAG school enrollment has declined more sharply (by 7.2%). This shows a more serious African American underrepresentation. However, overall African American representation falls between state and district population.
Asian population (including Pacific Islander) has remained steady at district and state, whereas enrollment has increased by 8.6%. Asian students have been way overrepresented for the whole survey period (2006-2012).
Native American/American Indian population has barely increased at district and state, and there is no enrollment at the school.

I would try to get in but there is no educational requirement to collect welfare just that you vote democrat

Naw. If they'd lowered the standards, TJ would still bee majority white.

Let's face facts: Asians have raised the bar and most white cannot compete.

Wrong. The Asian community has mastered the process for admissions success. My daughter attended some of the prep classes with them. Not a lick of originality, just memorize and repeat. Even their essays are scripted to tell the TJ admissions board what they want to hear. I actually saw a girl who could barely speak English turn out a spectacular sample essay.

You don't have to believe this, but it's true. TJ would be a better school if they used more subjective measures for admission such as critical thinking. Then eliminate those who pad their resumes with academic camps in the summer for which they have no interest.

Sigh....did any of you even bother looking at "why" TJ was ranked lower this year? It's because US News & World Report emphasizes the number of APs taken per student rather than the passing rate. Seriously, take a look, they even admitted that they put that emphasis. The number 1 school (TAG school in Texas) has a rate of approx. 13 APs per student but only a 60% passing rate. TJ has a 87% passing rate but around 6 or 7 APs per student.

Check your facts. However, I will admit that there were some great kids who haven't gotten into TJ. The top ranked middle school math whiz in the state was declined admissions last year. There are a ton of kids at TJ who really didn't deserve to get in. It all started going downhill once that old Admissions Director left after the Class of 2014.

Critical thinking is not a subjective measure; it is easily tested.

How, exactly, do you separate those applicants; "who pad their resumes with academic camps in the summer for which they have no interest" from intellectually curious students who attend academic summer camps seeking challenge and growth?

Isnt the head of admissions at tj a black woman? She doesnt let many blacks into tj but is finding other ways to bring it down like admitting mostly asians and not even the smart ones.
