How does buying a motorcycle work?
Posted by: FourWheeler ()

I have a couple questions:

Do you buy a motorcycle first and then get a license for it?
Does a normal car license work for motorcycles?
How do you take a motorcycle license test if you don't have a motorcycle because you can't drive it off the lot? Do you rent one or something?

How do you learn to ride?
Do you have to keep it insured all year round or just the months you ride it?

What's an average cost of a middle-quality bike?

Associated Gear?

Do bitches get moist from it?

Love the last question. Get a crotch rocket. Make sure you ditch the helmet. Those are for pussies.

Nobody buys motorcycles any more. You steal them from biker gangs.

You can. But you can't drive it home.

> Does a normal car license work for motorcycles?

No. You need the "M" designation.

You can take a weekend class that teaches you to ride (class provides the motorcycles) and you take the test at the end. Or you could illegally learn to ride in your 'hood, have a licensed rider ride your bike to the DMV (you follow in a car) and you take the test.

Class or bust your ass until you figure it out.

It's like car insurance - all year round.

Crotch Rocket or cruiser?

Several hundred dollars. Like close to 500-750

You forgot about the first step: Being a douchebag.

It comes naturally once you achieve the following: Become a fat, hairy, stinky, Grade Z assclown who craves attention.

> Do bitches get moist from it?

Not as moist as the "men" who ride them. :-)

Depending on your age and type of Bike. Me 47 and Yamaha Vstar-1100. I have had My Class M for about 20 years.

You have to do a learners and ride with someone who has one, 6 months?
Insurance I pay 200 a year through Geico, Not a problem whole year and yes if you have a Tag/Reg you have to have insurance. They base the Insurance on the fact you only Ride it warm weather.

I would start Small and work up to a larger Bike, I took my DMV road test on a Enduro 250 loaned to me by Manassas Honda, the CB750k I bought uised at the time weighed 2x more than the one I took it on, at that time they didn't have a wait period for Learners.

Gear, Lots O Money, Leather will save you if you have an accident, (Your Gonna Have an accident, just a matter of when) if its minor it will prevent Road Rash, The More Serious it may not matter, Broken Bones, Death ETC. I don't mean to sound cold but unless you watch out for everyone else, I can tell you they don't Watch out for you. Ride in a large Group ;) or get a Loud Bike.

Take a Course (NOVA College) has them I think, it will help you learn your Bike, and I recommend it Highly.

You will soon end up taking your last breath on the Northern Va road. don't fuck around here on a motorcycle. Buy a dirt bike and learn to ride. This area sucks for riding on the street.
So many cock suckers texting and talking on the phone, or the fucking illegal spics or chinks will run you down. It's not worth it. I have spent 20 years here and for the last 5 my motorcycle has stayed in the garage, way too many fuck knuckles on the road.
Fuck this area.

Too many people. They just keep cramming them into Fairfax. I don't even know where these people come from, or where they work. Or why they would want to have a mortgage on a townhouse in one of these sprawling new neighborhoods. I guess there is nowhere else to find a job for people with very specific/unique skills.

Take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course, the least expensive option is at Alexandria NVCC. Successfully passing the course means the M endorsement on your license.

Start on a used bike, you can probably get something reliable for $3k from Craigslist or Ebay motors.

Wear safety gear. You should be able to find a jacket for $100-150, helmet for $120-150, gloves for $20-30, plus wear sturdy boots and jeans.

There is a good article here: http://www.motorcycle.com/how-to/choosing-your-first-motorcycle-a-beginners-guide-89771.html

Good luck!

THIS! Definitely take the course. I'm alive today because that course taught me what I would have probably learned the hard way otherwise.

I learned everything the hard way. I bought an old old honda shadow 750 and rode it around in the grass for a while, wiped out a bunch of times before I got the hang of it then went out on the road (had my permit, but not M class at this point). Rode for years on a permit (bike was insured as insurance doesn't require an m class license) then got a second bike - the harley I have now. I used my harley to do the test at the dmv and years and years later got into an accident on 395. I never took a motorcycle course, but still managed to crash in such a way that my bike fell over, but I stayed on my feet and was able to ride the bike away from the scene. The only damage was a broken clutch lever and I had a spare one of those at home. Maybe I'm really lucky, but the hard way ended up being less costly for me. That is not going to be the case all the time though.

Listen to Dame Bramage...mostly good advice EXCEPT.....buy the best helmet you

can afford because you are going to go down.

If you have a cheap head buy a cheap helmet.

+1, and I agree with this. ^^

One can get a Snell and DOT approved helmet for the range mentioned, both Scorpion and HJC make sturdy brain buckets. Not sure if you'll get more protection from a $500 Arai, but you'll get more comfort.

Just remember, there are two kinds of bikers. Those that have gone down and those that are going to.

With the traffic and insane, careless drivers in this area, I would never ride a bike around NOVA.

And chicks get hotter for Ferraris and Lambos.

A lot of sound advice on this website. I moved here from the midwest and was shocked at the indifference DC drivers paid to cyclists. I miss my bike but it was just not worth the stress: I'm done until i get out of this zoo...

I mostly ride back roads, Unless its rolling Thunder I stay off main roads, but having a trailer I get few calls to Transport a bike after a mishap, mostly from a friend, so I would suggest getting friendly with someone who has a Trailer. Just in case. You can always call a tow truck.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers inexpensive rider training courses, often at community colleges, and includes use of small motorcycles. Absolutely worth taking the course BEFORE you shop for a bike. And get your motorcycle license before you shop, so you can take test rides. Read some motorcycle magazines, so you can get some general ideas about styles and prices.
