Opinions on CNU?

What do you guys think about CNU? How does it stack up with other, similar schools? Obviously it's not W&M or Tech but it seems pretty solid

Way too expensive for what it is.

No reason to do that when there are better options.

Great place to attend if John Blutarsky is your idol!

University of Phoenix has a higher 4-year graduation rate.

that's cause they'll graduate anybody that breathes oxygen. Failing students means less tuition next semester. Why would they do that?

When did so many of you on FFU become so jaded, so small, so petty? Has life beaten you down to the point that everything is snark worthy to you?

I used to hate when my father would always tell me that things in his day was better, that his generation accomplished more.

He was right....

CNU's president, Paul Tribble, is a douche. His nephew, Mark, got caught selling cocaine on campus and the school did nothing about it.

I love how Tech is the gold standard in NoVA for education. If you go to high school in NoVA and have a fucking pulse you can go to Tech. If not, shoot yourselves, because your job prospects beyond your local retail shop or pizza chair are virtually nil.

Tech is the place that douches who will spend a fortune on a mini mansion but not on a decent education send their kids. It's nothing but an overgrown diploma mill. If it weren't for its athletic prowess (again, the sign of a truly great education) nobody would really care about it.

Let's talk about Cho for a second. He was about to graduate with an English degree and he could barely talk or write a coherent, grammatically correct sentence in English! That's a real Virginia Tech education for you.

Knew that would be the response. I went to a private school with a sterling reputation out of state. I actually started getting letters from Tech BEGGING me to apply after the PSAT that I ignored.
Just saw too many of my smart friends who had parents who were really well off who had to rein in their dreams because their parents weren't willing to spend money on them to go anywhere else.
I guess VA Tech is an alright Engineering school. But Engineers will always do okay for themselves anywhere. And there are much better engineering schools out there than Tech.

It's the fifth best college in the state, and if you really think Mason is that good, it's sixth.

In this order:
W&M/UVA
Tech
JMU/GMU
CNU
VCU
ODU
Radford
Longwood

I suppose it's not terrible if you want to be a marine biologist. Outside of that, I can't think of many legitimate reasons to want to go there.

why bother going to a liberal arts college. You will be wasting money and working in the fast food industry post college. Your diploma will be worth about the same as TP so feel free to wipe your ass with it. That college is for the darkies, you brown?

As a CNU Alum (with a relatively high-paying job) I can assure you that your diploma will not be worth the same as TP.

CNU is keeping a small enrollment (~4,800-5,000 students) and people are applying in exponentially larger numbers. In a few years, your diploma will be worth MUCH more because of the competition to get into CNU.

Everything on campus is essentially new, the class sizes are small which leads to great one-on-one sessions with your professors/advisors, and you are pretty close to the beach if that's your thing.

It is not a "college for darkies" as some ignorant fools believe. Those are more ODU/NSU. While there is some diversity, it is predominantly white at CNU.

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your college decision

You realize that "liberal arts" includes the sciences and things like economics, right? Things that people use in their jobs.

For humanities and social sciences you might as well go to JMU or GMU. VA Tech is good for engineering though. It is also good for horticulture (like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman).

Christopher Newport University. A buddy of mine has a son that goes there. Reputation as a party / jerk-off school, primarily for students who couldn’t get into UVA, W&M, VT.

Like any 4 year school, what you get out of it depends on what you put in.

Good luck.

considering it's a dry campus I DOUBT it's a party school. You're thinking more of ODU

The school is probably fine, but I've always thought the Newport News/Hampton area was kinda ghetto.

Just like VCU is an ok school too, as long as you don't mind going to college in the middle of the projects.

WVU might be the lowest ranked state school in the country, and you probably won't learn much or earn a degree that's worth anything.

But you'll definitely have fun, that much is certain.

UVA is clearly superior to William and Mary. Those are the only two with a national rep. After that it's more program-specific. Tech might have been Number 3 years ago, but the other schools have really caught up and actually JMU is more selective than Tech now. I'm sure all the crime news is keeping kids away from Tech.

Each of these schools has a different feel and it's great to be a Virginian because they are so cheap compared to privates and out-of-state schools.

The pecking order of universities' prestige affects acceptance rates.

The kids coming to Tech are ones who couldn't get accepted at the public ivies:

UVA
UNC
Georgia Tech
Penn State

JMU gets kids who can't get into Tech or UVA.

It doesn't matter which of these schools you get a degree from. If you work hard enough and are of average intelligence, you will be successful. Some people from UVA grow up to be failures and some people from ODU grow up to be successful.

People tend to forget this. If you're good at your job, you'll beat the guy who went to Harvard or Yale. And you'll have less student debt. 10 years after college, nobody cares where you went. It's not where you go; it's what you do.

this. Besides, people only really care about where you went to grad school.

ODU partying doesn't hold a candle to JMU partying - JMU is the ultimate party school. CNU is full of kids who rebelled against Liberty. A liberal arts major will not get a job, period. You can wipe your butt with a liberal arts diploma from WM, UVA, VT, JMU, CNU, ODU, RU, Longwood, etc. After spending $80K for an in-state education, there isn't a job much less a high paying job available to a liberal arts major needed to pay back student loan debt. Spend more at a private school and enjoy a higher student loan payment. Almost all liberal arts majors default to teaching which means they go into more debt for more education.

Liberal Arts degrees:

-Chemistry
-Physics
-Biology
-Math
-Political Science
-International Relations
-Computer Science
-Psychology
-Sociology
-Economics

Yes, I suppose liberal arts really are useless.

Any huge sweeping generalizations regarding college ("party school", "useless liberal arts","prestige", "ranking", etc.) should all be taken with a grain of salt. All of these colleges are complex insitutions with many facets that a person may or may not fit into or take advantage of. The key is to get into a school that offers something of interest and challenge to you as an individual. Once there, take advantage of that "something" (hopefully it's not just partying). You make yourself using what the school has to offer. Once you graduate, you market yourself for who you are and what you have gained (and not for what school you went to).

Good luck to everyone going through this process. It is difficult and you never quite know if you are getting the "best". The financial costs really can muddy things. Some colleges seem to charge more just to make themselves look exclusive and some colleges seem to actually give you more for the money. It's hard to figure it all out.

this. People who say "liberal arts" degrees are useless probably don't have a degree of their own. If they do it is from Strayer or Everest or something. Maybe ITT Tech. Anyway, if you don't want to hear any more from the posters on here then have a look at this 2013 VA University listing which puts CNU at #17.

You lumped in sciences with liberal arts. Usually, the criticism is directed at liberal arts & humanities majors or liberal arts & social science (or the soft sciences as they're commonly referred to).

4icu states that their ranking is a popularity ranking, not a quality ranking -

The aim of this website is to provide an approximate popularity ranking of world Universities and Colleges based upon the popularity of their websites. This is intended to help international students and academic staff to understand how popular a specific University/College is in a foreign country.

We do not claim - by any means - to rank organisations or their programs, by the quality of education or level of services provided. The 4icu.org University Web Ranking is not an academic ranking and should not be adopted as the main criteria for selecting a higher education organization where to study.

You can say it's invalid all you want (thought if you take the time to look up the national rankings you'll see that the previously posted list isn't too far off) but if you're looking for a truly invalid bullshit list then check out this one http://www.campusexplorer.com/colleges/search/?state=VA

The liberal arts have included math and science since the 5th century. See this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_arts_education

All liberal arts colleges have math and science majors. They are definitely part of a liberal arts education. Instead of using the words "liberal arts", you should say humanities or social science majors if that is what you mean when you are talking about "useless majors". I would wager that what is considered "useless" from a vocational point of view is, in fact, very useful from other points of view (becoming a more interesting and analytical person for example).

Point taken, but, this thread was disparaging liberal arts colleges/universities in general as if liberal arts colleges equaled liberal arts majors.

Many of the smaller Liberal Arts college only offer BA degrees, no matter the major, and some of them have much higher percentage yields of hard sciences majors and subsequent PhDs or MDs than nearly any other colleges/universities in the country. (See Carleton, Oberlin, ...)

Also, many of the larger universities have their hard sciences majors/BS degrees in their colleges of arts and sciences and offer BA degrees in hard sciences as well for people with broader interests. (See Berkeley, Case Western, Harvard, UNC, ...)

The real split is between schools that originated as schools of arts and sciences and those that originated as engineering schools. This reflects the pre-industrial origins of US arts and sciences colleges/universities as upper class training grounds in humanities and sciences (and, of course, religion) and separate schools in practical disciplines (engineering, nursing, business, animal husbandry, ...) for the middling sorts. Result is that many schools have their hard science degrees in their colleges of arts and sciences, and separate degrees for practical things in separate colleges. (This split is also reflected in VA and NC at UVA/Tech and UNC/NCSU, where land grant universities ended up with the practical stuff.)

I didn't say it was invalid, I just quoted their disclaimer...

That said, the problem with the 4icu list as a quality ranking for undergrad education is that a web-based ranking reflects a combination of university size, research, and D-1 athletics. Given the combination of the three, it's probably a fairly decent ranking for graduate education (where a significant fraction of the large schools are also good at research and maybe even athletics (Berkeley, Stanford, UVa...), and the smaller research universities (Chicago, Harvard, CMU, ...) get a significant number of hits as well. It may also be an OK ranking for undergraduate education for schools of similar sizes. But, given the range of size of US universities/colleges, the web rating won't be nearly as good across undergraduate education where the mix of large universities and small LACs with little research will significantly affect the results.

Note, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you took their data set and weighted for size/research (cites)/athletics, that you could generated rankings that do a pretty good job of reflecting academic quality.

My issue with rankings is that I don't consider athletics as a factor. That may be what drives admission for a small percentage of students, but it shouldn't factor into academic institution ranking. If you picked your school because of their football program and you're not an NFL prospect you need to re-evaluate your life a bit.

liberal arts meaning BA's in english, history, psychology, poly sci, government, literature, french litererature, art history - perfectly fine areas to study however there is NO job market for bachelor degrees in these fields - it is a fact, not a judgment, not an opinion, not a slander.

if you took out a loan, it means your family did not have enough money to pay for a full ride, and it means the financial lender is going to want their money back post graduation. you will need money to pay the lender back so you need a job. if there are no jobs with these majors, you will need to flip burgers or find employment in a marketable field. a BA in these fields will not qualify you for any business, engineering or science job when there are grads who majored in these studies.

That's a segment of liberal arts, not the only areas of study under the label "liberal arts"

Neither do I. I think the 4icu rankings are driven primarily by the three factors I listed. To generate only a quality ranking, I'd build a model that had the three factors and then eliminate size and athletics to generate the quality list.

no kidding, the whole ranking system is skewed. take out alumni donations and d1 sports and see how the ranks change. uva is ranked high because of the donations. gw, bucknell and some of the other schools are now unranked for misrepresenting their numbers. odu is unranked because they don't participate, because of the high number of matriculating students, because of the nature of the tidewater area commerce (va beach zip code is the largest in the state and naval base is the largest in the nation) - the school doesn't slot neatly into categories used to rank suburban schools like jmu - there are many factors which skew the 4 year grad rate. nova people are like sheep in their thinking, the offspring of these sheep are equally ignorant. people from out of area or send their kids out of area have a much better perspective of their place in this world.

4-year graduation rates may be skewed also. Some majors take five years. Pre-med at UVA and architecture at VT are two cases. Students in the ROTC programs can take 5 years.

CPA and Engineering programs can also take 5 years.

so, take out endowments, sports, penalty for 4+ year graduation for pre-med, architecture, cpa, engineering, rotc - what is left of the ranking system?
