I've eaten at Mellow Mushroom in Birmingham a couple times. Not very impressed. Could have been just that location, I s'pose.

I went to one of those in Pinehurst NC last year. Damn good pizza but not cheap! And you get beer by the bucket.

It will be a epic failure. Before opening they should roll on over to donato's and see how biz is with expensive pizza.

Mellow Mushroom seems to be becoming the Five Guys of Pizza. By that I mean that the original locations were good and worth visiting, but now that they are everywhere, there really isn't anything special about them.

Stop at Mellow Mushroom down in Little Five Points in Atlanta before or after catching a band - absolutely - its part of the character of the neighborhood, but out in suburbia it's just another pizza joint taking up a spot in a strip mall next to a staples, a best buy, and a target and with about the same flavor.

I think another one is going in University Mall across from Mason when they redo everything in there.

It is located off Elden St where the old Fuddruckers was. I will give it a try, but if I want a slice in Herndon, I'm hitting up Rubinos.

I wish Alabama could export some decent food, not that shitty Mellow Mushroom crapfest.

Can they at least have sent us a Big Bob Gibson's or a Dreamland or something? Alabama barbecue isn't all that great, but it's better than the shitfest we have around here. Like Willard's yankee crap sandwiches. Yuck.

Actually, you can get excellent pizza right behind this new store (which is the old Fuddruckers) at the italian restaurant Luciano's.

+1 for Rubinos.

I will give MM a try though, I've heard good things.

No parking

I just got back from Richmond a few hours ago, and I ate Magic Mushroom last night down there and I wasn not impressed. Honestly I'd rather eat Pizza Hut or even Dominos. Both are cheaper and taste better.

Well, you guys can keep debating if Mellow is any good or not, or you can stop by Monday for our grand opening. Shameless plug, yes, but I work there and could use the money.

Maybe we'll do good business despite being in Herndon. Maybe we won't. But we've had to turn away kind of a lot of people who wandered in before we were ready for 'em.

We're right down the street from Carpool, with a similarly large beer selection and better food. I'd like to think we'll be okay.

The much-anticipated grand opening of Mellow Mushroom pizzeria happened on Monday.


Monday was a good day, both for the brother and sister owner team of Pooja and Amit Mehta, and for pizza lovers throughout the area - it marked the grand opening of Mellow Mushroom, a unique new pizzeria in Herndon.

Quite a crowd turned out for the grand opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m., including Mayor Lisa Merkel and members of the Town Council, local business owners, family members of Pooja's and Amit's, the Town Clerk and Town Manager, and many more.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the restaurant officially opened for business to its first lunch crowd at 11 a.m.

Mayor Lisa Merkel said she was one of a small crowd invited to a "practice opening" for friends and family members of the restaurant's employees on Saturday, and said the pizza was "to die for," her favorite being a pizza she tried that had shrimp and grits for toppings.

Patch was treated to a look at the inside of the restaurant shortly before the ceremony. The restaurant features beautiful murals both inside and outside the restaurant, as well as sleek and elegant decor with the faint hint of steampunk style.

Yeah, I don't get it. MM has pretty good food, and a GREAT beer selection. No, it's not cheap, but that keeps out some of the "just want to be loaded, man" crowd. I think they'll do well.

Mellow Mushroom and Parking

We planned to go to Mellow Mushroom for lunch today. Upon arrival, it was apparent there was a parking issue. The shopping center nearby obviously does not appreciate MM's presence and makes it clear that MM's customers cannot park in their lot - or pay the price for doing so. The price is to get towed by Battlefield Towing and have the joys of tracking your car down and then paying to get it out. We watched approx 5 cars get towed (including one whose owner didn't even go to MM) in a 30-45 minute span.

MM's parking is clearly marked with an MM painted on each spot. However, there is not nearly enough of these spots to accommodate their customer number at any given time. I do not remember any of these issues when Fuddruckers was there so I am not sure why it is an issue now.

Anyway, we went to a nearby restaurant instead to avoid getting towed. That experience was not a good one either. It was apparent that Luciano's either was actively helping get people towed or at the least, relishing in watching it happen. As a person in our party said, "It's a pizza war!"

Our waitress at Luciano's was rude as well. Two in our party had already ordered and she was waiting on the 3rd. Her patience ran out after 30 seconds and she said, "Are you ready to order or should I come back? I have other tables to wait on besides this one." whoa.

So, the point of this post is... I cannot wait to try out Mellow Mushroom (I've been to one in NC) but I will have to go when parking is not an issue. The other point is, I will NEVER visit Luciano's again... or give business to that shopping center. It is sad that they have SO MANY empty parking spots yet they are unwilling to reach out to their new neighbor (MM) and share their parking lot. MM's customers would potentially patronize the other businesses in that center before or after eating their meal; however, they are not going to do that if their car gets towed.

I would hope that the town of Herndon would work together with these businesses to provide a harmonious atmosphere for everyone. I would think that everyone who is getting their cars towed will not be back any time soon. It is bad business for everyone all around.

I noticed this issue on MM's facebook page. People are pretty furious. We have noticed the insanity in the parking lot, too. We wet to pick up Guapo's and I stayed in the car to prevent being towed. It is pretty bad when you can't go to CVS or other businesses in fear of getting towed while you're there. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is something a bit more going on here than we customers are privy to - the other businesses are unhappy with MM for some reason.

After being served the wrong pizza (it was the table next to us who ordered it) and waiting an hour and 10 minutes for our pizza, we finally were served the correct pizza. The wait staff was wandering around with food, asking each table if it was theirs. They had no idea who had ordered what.

People, if you're hungry, do NOT go there!! Or have a substantial snack before you go. Its pure chaos there.

Nice job having a place where your customers have no parking..ooopps, just a little fuck up.

I went over the weekend and thought it was pretty good. Service was fine and the pizza was good. The $13 price for a small was fine. I brought half of it home. Will be back.

I took the liberty of forwarding the comments about the parking issues affecting those who visit Mellow Mushroom, along with our own, to the mayor and town council member Wolf. Yesterday, I drove by the shopping center and the "Parking for Shopping Center customers only, towing enforced" signs were prominently displayed. I suspect the restaurant tenants there are concerned about the competition. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of over reaction on the part of the shopping center owners. Their tenants could end up suffering from this no parking issue. I will be curious to see what sort of response I get from my E-mails to the mayor and council member Wolf. If you haven't done it yet, I urge those concerned about this to communicate with the town.

Great comment.....my catering business is also right next door facing Sterling Road and I welcome Mellow Mushroom to the neighborhood. They are employing local people, making our Community more safe, and are offering more dining options. We are happy for the increased exposure, and the increased traffic to our complex. Any Mellow Mushroom customer is welcome to park in our back lot....you never know, there could be some cross-selling going on which can help all of our local businesses. Let's not be so narrow minded fellow business people! This is the whole concept of a "mall" where increased traffic helps all.

I drive by there everyday but just can't find the courage to park and eat there.
