NOVA is not Northern Virginia. NOVA is a community college.

Seriously, anyone who refers to Northern VA as "NOVA" must not have lived here for long. NOVA is a community college (and yes I've taken a course or two there, so I'm not being a snob).

Actually NOVA is Northern Virginia, and NVCC is the college known as NOVA. You can guess what DELMARVA is on your own ;)

I've lived here since 1972, and I've called this area NoVa ever since then.

Most everyone seemed to know what I was talking about, even when I went away to college in southern Virginia. If they didn't initially, they caught on fairly quickly.

Ever since '72, I've heard others refer to this area as NoVa as well...

So...

If you want to get really technical about the lingo: NoVa = Northern Virginia, while NOVA (All caps) = Northern Virginia Community College. We already had a thread about it years ago. As for real world usage, I only use NoVa/NOVA when typing a message, while in person or over the phone I usually say: Northern Virginia for the region, and NOVA for NVCC.

ok guess we can spell it out, if your talking Colleges, You have GMU, NVCC, JMU, VATech, VCU and MW. You ask about Jurisdictions for Populations, You Have Tidewater, Richmond and NOVA (NOVA) Encompasses Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria. PW and LC are not a part of it, its also the breakdown on the Road Taxes and METRO Taxes gasoline before the gas companies got wise and Centralized the Pricing. Lord Fairfax changes the NVCC designation outside of Northern VA, which includes LC, Faquier westward. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-state-of-nova as COG expanded some of PW and LC where included. I will concede to NoVa and NOVA as a variation

In college I thought it was cool to insist that Nova was a community college, and that I was from Northern Virginia. Then I got over myself.

This. Spoken, it was Northern Virginia. I also rarely used NoVa or NOVA, or Northern Virginia in writing, as any of that would have been a rare occurrence.

Also, depending upon how far away I was from NoVa, if further away, I would start with "suburbs of Washington, DC", then go to "northern Virginia", then if the party was interested, to "Falls Church" or "Vienna".

All you retards shut the fuck up. NoVa is short for Northern Virginia and short for Norther Virginia Community College. It's called NOVA because it's name is fucking Northern Virginia, which NoVa is fuckin short for.

Now, can we end the retarded ass meaningless discussion for retards please.

I thought NOVA meant No Oral, Vag or Anal with massages. That's what I've heard anyway... But really, if you go to NOVA, you're attending NVCC. If you live in NOVA, then it's Northern Va. I've lived here my whole life and the term exists in both contexts and cases (NOVA/NoVa)--not just one or the other.

I've lived here since 1964, and I've never once heard anyone refer to the area as NOVA. Most people don't speak in acronyms. Write in them yes, speak in them no. I would understand what someone was sauing if they said NOVA, of course, but it's certainly not normal conversation.

Back in the 70s & 80s, there was a subset who referred to the community college as NOVA CoCo. Very cutesy and usually folks you didn't hang around with much.

Same here. I've lived here my whole life, over 40 years, and have never said nor heard anyone else refer to Northern Virginia as "NoVa" in speech. It's called "Northern Virginia" to outsiders, otherwise no one would have a clue what you are talking about. I do use NoVa when writing, as on da innernitz. Also, no one ever calls Northern Virginia Community College "NVCC". If you do then you are an idiot. It's "NOVA".

If I would say to somebody that knew what "Northern Virginia" was that I was heading to NoVa for for the weekend, or something like that, they would know that I was heading to the region of Northern Virginia and not northern Virginia community college.

Of course, there would be those hackneyed and tired attempts at humor, like, why are you going to community college if you're already in college?

Many others used NoVa (and use it) in a similar fashion.

Sure, if I am somewhere else, where someboby might not know what NoVa meant (in either context...school or region), I go through the DC/Suburbs of DC/actual town thing to help them get an idea, but then again, most likely those people wouldn't know what Northern Virginia Community College was, either. So I don't say NoVa with those people.

And that has been since 1972.

So F you if you want me to tell you my experience has been any different. It's all about being smart and knowing your audience.

I was born and raised in DC Metro also. NovA IS Northern Virginia. It just HAPPENS to be that NOVA has the same acronym.

And "Bob" is the guy across the street, NOT some guy you know! And the only "Ford" is the one I used to own! I know it's true, because I said it on the Interwebs!

Here's a dollar, go buy a clue.

I went to NOVACOCO in the late 60's. We also called it Turnpike Tech.

But anyway, it was the best way to stay out of 'Nam. Extremely cheap and it was IMPOSSIBLE to flunk out for any reason. I might not be alive today if not for my NOVACOCO student deferment.

Long live NOVACOCO!!!

I personally favor changing the designations to "Good Virginia" for Northern Virginia and "Virginia" for the rest.
