FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- What are the youths of America up to these days? Well, some of them have taken to attempting to ruin our grocery-shopping experiences by pretending to take nasty spills in the bread aisle while holding a gallon of milk or juice in each hand.
"Gallon smashing," as it's called, is something of a new trend on YouTube, and it turns out its origins can be traced to that great bastion of intellectualism and creativity called Fairfax County, Va.
Three teenagers from Vienna came up with the stunt, and last week posted a video compilation of themselves wreaking wet and stupid havoc at several area grocery stores.
In it, the three teens take turns falling down and simultaneously either throwing the milk or juice jugs to the ground or smashing them against the wall. Seconds later, they are scrambling to get up from their milky, juicy messes with surrounding customers, unaware that it is a prank, offering aid.
But in reality, these three jerks are just making a mess and leaving it for hardworking—and probably underpaid—store employees to clean up. Meanwhile, customers who happen to be in proximity of these "gallon smashing" scenes often wind up getting splashed as the kids come crashing down. There's no indication that these bozos are offering to pay the resultant dry-cleaning bills.
Fox 5 claims to have caught up with one of the teens behind the video, but he would not go on the record. Still, other grocery store patrons were not enthusiastic:
One of the teens spoke to us by phone saying he and his cousins are wannabe actors, consider themselves entertainers and merry pranksters. Gallon Smashing is just one of about 20 videos they have produced.
"I've kind of heard about these. That's terrible," one woman told us.
"It's disturbing to see the lack of empathy that they have for the people that have to clean up their mess," added another man shopping at the Giant Food store.
The three youths' YouTube channel, The Chaizy Channel, features other videos including pranks such as asking National Mall visitors to take their photos only to drop their iPhones before handing it to the person.
The original "Gallon Smashing" video is temporarily offline, though other versions are available. Meanwhile, the prank has already won a few copycats. So, until further notice, if you see a teenager sprawled on the floor of a supermarket after appearing to drop his groceries, just leave him there and don't offer any assistance.
