Name change from Redskins?
Posted by: Skins fan ()
Date: February 07, 2013 07:07PM

This sensitivity thing really frustrates me to no end. If this name change does happen, I pray the name becomes "Crackers" or "Hillbillys". I'll root like hell for them, even more than I than I root for the Skins now and that's hard to do and I'd bet anything a whole lot of other people who don't give a damn about football would become instant "Crackers" fans and watch every game. UFB.

the name 'Redskins' is absurd just as 'the whiteskins' 'the Blackskins' 'the Yellowskins' would be. Just stupid. We cannot think of a single better name for a team based in what is supposed to be the center of the free world. Lame.

Change it to 'Rednecks' and have a pick-up and gun rack as the logo. See what kind of outrage Glen Beck and Ted Nuget come up with with that.

On a somewhat less goofy note, other teams in Washington have magical names such as the Wizards and the Mystics. Why not something along those lines (though Washington Warlocks is not my choice). One thing I don't like if they make it sound political, such as Senators, diplomats, yuck.

LOL. You must be a fan of the teal explosion that the NFL encountered in the 90s. Also, most men who enjoy the sport really aren't concerned with the team colors. I guess Roger Goodell's efforts to reach out to new fans are working. He is attracting men who are concenred with team colors!

If you had any age you would know what the Bullets, Senators and Caps, are as much of the VA, DC, MD area. I agree change is good sometimes, but when you change the name you change the History. If you want to change the Redskins, the Team needs to be sold or Moved and bring in the new team under a new owner. I cannot tell you how much I dislike a knock off. I give you a few shows as an example. Dukes of Hazzard, Johnny Knocksville is not Bo or Luke Duke, The Incredible Hulk is not one of the many Remakes, Battlestar Galactica, Starbuck was a Guy and the Tonight Show is Johnny Carson. If they really want a change they need to follow Baltimore in My Humble Opinion, Sell the team. Colts went to Indianapolis Colts and a new team entered Baltimore Ravens, I have no issue with that, but The Redskins and Cowboys will never be the same. I DO NOT LIKE CHANGE but that's me, but I think you will find I am in the Majority in the end.

I am of Scandinavian descent - and no, I do not get hot and bothered over the Vikings being used as a team name even though they are often depicted as being savages.

I know people who are of Turkish, Greek and Irish descent who do not get hot and bothered by the names Trojans, Spartans or Irish - although they do are often depicted in unfavorable ways.

Political correctness has run amok - and use of the name of warriors, braves and Redskins or specific Indian names like the Sioux or Seminoles, etc. was never intended to be negative in any way. Rather it was a recognition of their fighting spirit and bravery.

When the political correctness folks get their ways, there will come a time when Native Americans will bemoan the fact that they get NO recognition because everyone is afraid they will take offense when none was intended.

IF and only IF the name has to change, I would propose the "Federals" because everyone knows that the federals are out to fuck you up - and they're very good a fucking everything up. Of course, the federals are also known to be ineffective and bureaucratic and as long as Snyder is a team owner that will be the more likely attribute for the team.

Like the suggested Beltway Bandits, Washington Pigskins, and Washington Warriors.

Others:
* Washington Monuments - we know it's all about testosterone
* Washington Warthogs - keep the Hogettes but ditch the racism. Not that warthogs are around DC, I don't think, but how many people would care?
* Washington Gridlock
* Washington Traffic
* Washington Heights - for the height limit on buildings. Confusing to people in NYC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Heights,_Manhattan).
* Washington Jeffersons - just to confuse people. Use the Jefferson Memorial in the logo.
* Washington Cherries - for the sakura. Should balance the testosterone a bit and piss off all of the OTHER people - the ones not currently ticked about the Redskins name. Not being macho enough to have cherry blossoms on the logo, the team would have to revert to the old legend about George Washington and have the logo be an axe chopping down one of the Japanese cherry trees. That'll tick off still other people.
* Washington Georges
* Washington Feds - police or government? We'll never tell.
* Washington Spacers - home of the Air & Space Museum(s); if they're having a bad year it'll be understandable. UFO or rocket or plane as the logo - all macho, as long as the aliens in the UFO are impressive.
* Washington Airspace (or Aerospace) - see previous. Also, reference to the no-fly zones in DC.
* Washington Airports. Because we have two big ones.
* Washington Potomacs (or Potomac)
* Washington Rocks - for the Three Sisters rocks, Great Falls, and all of the granite and marble in the Mall-area buildings, but we'll know it's all about the balls. Or the diamonds. Crud - maybe this should be the name of a local baseball team. Get the Hard Rock Cafe to co-sponsor the team; have the cheerleaders wear granite-colored outfits and play air guitar.
* Washington Falls - for Great Falls. Not so good when they trip on the field. But they do play in autumn, so it would fit. Logo: Great Falls framed with autumn leaves.

The demand to change the name says more about the people who want it changed then those who oppose it. Low self esteem or insecurity issues perhaps?

Notice that there is no corresponding clamor for the Boston Celtics to change their ethnically based name even though the team image which is a midget Irish leprechaun could certainly be considered offensive by people with an Irish heritage. Ditto for the Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" -- don't hear any outcry to change that name either.

For that matter, the Minnesota Vikings have a name that leverages the Scandinavian heritage of upper mid west and uses a burly Viking looking character dressed in an explorer's outfit as a mascot. You don't hear any blonde Swedes or Norwegians whining about it either.

Maybe we need to send those who want to rid the name "Redskins" to therapy sessions designed to improve their self image.

I think changing the name is a good idea. It's offensive to Native Americans. Imagine if the team WAS named the "blackskins". You'd have every dark skinned person marching on Washington, complaining about how racist and ignorant all the white people are, and there would be looting, rioting, whole city blocks destroyed by fire until the city was a smouldering mess of dead bodies. Just because the Native Americans aren't as "uppity" (yes, I did use that word) doesn't make the name any less offensive.

Yup, no doubt the place would burn. Another example of low self esteem.

The other guy has it right - change the name to the "Rednecks" and then we can all celebrate and be proud of living south of the Mason Dixon line.

No self esteem issues here!

Are "celtics" or "vikings" derogatory terms used to describe those particular ethnic groups? Just curious. I don't think they are, hance the controversy.

This. The name was never derogatory or offensive but rather one of homage and honor. A vast majority of native americans are not offended by it. It's the white guilt, politically correct, folks who feel they should be offended for them that are raising a stink. It's revisionist history.

If they changed it to “Warriors” after a few years people would get upset about that too. How violent! Just like changing the name of the Bullets. It’s silly.

I’ll say it again, Dan Snyder isn’t going to change the name until a court makes him. He already went to court and it was ruled the name was not offensive. If you don’t like it, tough, it’s not changing.

I’m sure your intent is to be sensitive, but you've been misled to think it's a bad word, it’s not. Never was.

Here is some history for you…

http://anthropology.si.edu/goddard/redskin.pdf

The Native American Sources of Redskin:

It is clear from the earliest citations that redskin was regarded as an Indian expression. It was at first used only to translate what Indians said or as a consciously adopted Indian turn of phrase employed in formally addressing Indians. The tribal identities of the speakers who were quoted using this word in the period from 1769 to 1822 point to its specific languages of origin.

Here is another interesting link from a 2002 issue of Sports Illustrated on the subject

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1025046/1/index.htm

Further, I recommend reading “BEFORE THE REDSKINS WERE THE REDSKINS: THE USE OF NATIVE AMERICAN TEAM NAMES IN THE FORMATIVE ERA OF AMERICAN SPORTS, 1857-1933” in its entirety.

Since it’s very long, I’ll just post a snippet.

Although the general treatment of Native Americans by the mainstream American culture throughout history was patronizing, insensitive, and immoral at times, the early use of Native American team names does not, in the context of sports team names, appear to have been particularly disparaging. Teams were named after Native Americans as patriotic gestures, as geographic identifiers, and occasionally as humorous refer-ences, but almost never with the intention of insulting or making fun of Native Americans specifically. The practice of adopting Native American names predates the practice of adopting the names of fierce animals as team nicknames; consequently, it seems unfair to suggest that Native American and animal nicknames sent similar messages, at least in the pre-1933 period. Moreover, the most famous teams bearing Native American names adopted before 1933—the Boston (now Atlanta) Braves and the Cleveland Indians of the MLB, the Boston (now Washington) Redskins of the NFL, and the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL)—70 chose their names, at least in part, as a reference to the supposed athleticism of Native Americans and their special successes in team sports.

Exactly. The term "Redskin" is only offensive because certain groups have made it so and demanded change. Those same groups garner public attention and money which gives them leverage and power which is what they really want.

If people named O'Toole and McCann started whining about the use of the name "Celtics" that would also become an offensive term over a period of time.

But they haven't because a) they don't suffer from insecurity issues and b) they are not easily exploited by demagogues, except for those Irish Americans who voted for Obama.

Ha Ha ... I just had to sneak that in.

Sorry.

I've been waging a stealth campaign since 1984 to have their name changed to
The Washington Foreskins. Seems to me the only people it would offend would be the hypersensitive prick lobby. Who own the media, academia and your momma.
