Looking to build an emergency preparedness kit. Any recommendations?
Posted by: VMoss ()

My brother and his family really got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy up in Long Island. After seeing how ill-prepared he was, it made me realize how I'm no better. I figured I should get an emergency supply kit in case there is a need to bug out of Falls Church quickly.

I'm not one of those survivalists or people that wants to stock a year's supply of baked beans in my basement, I just figured it would be smart to have something handy in case there is a need to get out of town fast.

Anyone else made any preparations? Any recommendations?

Here's a good starting point for you. FEMA's website page explaining what you should have in a ready-to-go backback:

I went through the same though process after the earthquake we had in August 2011. Even though I don't think we'll have another earthquake, it made me think about how screwed I'd be if there was some sort of mass evacuation, terrorist activity or some other bullshit that made everyone go into a panic.

I laugh at the show Preppers. If they really wanted to do it right they would keep their mouths shut. Besides looking at the mostly fat people a heart attack will get them before dommsday kicks in.

Two cases of those military meals - they're actually not too bad. A normal adult can go off of one meal a day (maybe 1.5).

After my mom died, I worried about my dad living by himself over in Augusta, WV so I got him a ready made 72 hour kit. I was gonna build one for her from various components but it ended up being a lot cheaper getting one already made up. There are some really good ones here:

With the Virginia Defense Force always ready, there is no need for civilians to worry about emergencies.

Surely you are joking. The first priority for government in an emergency is their own self-preservation. They call it Continuity of Government. It the largest budget line - by far - in FEMA. The little people are expected to shelter in place. Yet every disaster proves that people choose to get out of town.

So you really need two plans. One for if you stay, and one for if you go, and supplies to support both options. Either way, you will need to defend against the looters and people who are more desperate than you.

I don't know what this means.

FEMA says, build a kit, make a plan, do that. CERT is here to help.

They are not bad if you have been marching around all day and are starving. Thier shelf life is about 5 years.

Mountain house is handsdown much better tasting, is freezedried which means they maintain a lot of nutrients and weigh less. They also have a shelf life of 20years or more.

To make things even more fun you can recylce your urine to rehydrate the food.

is having Republicans running our goverment. Notice how concerned after Katrina and Sandy? They sure appreciate the ladies. However if you don't want to rely on Republican support try "EquippedToSurvive". Lots of good information and gear reviews. One of the first sites about survival.
Happy Surviving.

Not anymore. Google Cheaper than Dirt and "price gouging". A bunch of shooter forums are boycotting them now after jacking their prices up in the last couple weeks.

You ain't gonna survive in NOVA. Too many people and what you store then becomes the store for others. And they ain't gonna use plastic to pay.
Doomsday is just that. People live here for the convience and benefits. Basic life and politeness get thrown out the door when folks get hungary.
And everyone has guns. Ever missed a couple of meals? Multiply by days times millions and you have basic zombie 101.

You need to store water. And buy a few extra cans of food every time you shop.
Everything is delicious when you are hungry.
Humans will be the last resort. Probably get mad people disease.
And indigestion.
