This is the first GOOD thing Virginia traffic legislation has done in a long time.

That's a good thing! At least we don't have those speed trap cameras like they do in DC. What a scary thought.

I never had a problem with red-light except that I always thought they created more dangers than they solved. When approaching an intersection wher eI know there is a camera I slow down on yellows to make sure and there's always a tailgating asshole behind me who almost rear-ends me because she figures as long as the light hasn't been red for five seconds that it's safe to skate through.

Actually, I sat and watched someone run a red light at an intersection with cameras, on 50 by the police station. The guy was coming off one of the side streets and just blew across the intersection. Of course the cameras are only aimed at 50 so they didn't get his picture. It was an incredibly stupid move that could have ended in tragedy. I sat there with my jaw wide open in disbelief at what I had just seen.

So what was the point of the cameras again? Besides revenue?

Meh, I didn't mind them as long as I knew they were there. I don't really run red lights at major intersections that often anyway..

Guess that means more taxes now.

I never run red lights, but since they put up the red light cameras on 50, I have found myself coming to a screeching halt more than once for yellow lights I would (and do) otherwise go through. It's pretty obvious why rear-end accidents increase dramatically at intersections with red light cameras.

I don't see how it is Constitutional in Virginia, but just in case anyone missed it, due to the title of this thread...

Red light cameras are about to return to Virginia, and the City of Fairfax wants to be the first with a shiny, new automated ticketing system.

The General Assembly at first refused to reauthorize red light cameras in 2005, killing the deadly program — but not for long. Over the course of two years, furious lobbying from the insurance industry (photo tickets carry license points and higher insurance rates in states like California and Arizona) and greedy municipalities led to the adoption of the current reauthorizing statute. Despite the demonstrated failure of this Big Brother program as a safety measure, now any city with a population above 10,000 can have cameras.

A study conducted during several months at five busy intersections in Fairfax, Virginia, prior to the use of red light cameras found that, on average, a motorist ran a red light every 20 minutes at each intersection.3 During peak travel times, red light running was more frequent. Analysis of red light violation data from 19 intersections (without red light cameras) in four states found that 1,775 violations occurred over 554 hours, for a violation rate of 3.2 per hour per intersection.
