Funny, I was quoted a lot and my response was "I'm broke"...so let me rephrase the question. Can someone recommend an affordable bankruptcy attorney in Fairfax.

Are you trying to understand the options, or have you decided between Chapter 7 and 13? In either case I would suggest contact John Bevis - his office is on Judicial Drive across from the ADC. Costs for a Chapter 13 should be around $3500, but you do not need to pay this upfront since attorney fees get rolled into your repayment plan.

For what it's worth, you can file 'pro se' (not exactly sure of the Latin translation, but it means that you are filing without an attorney) and save yourself some money. The filing fee is around $300 and most people should be able to fill out the basic forms in a long afternoon if most of your debt is from credit cards, personal loans and a mortgage. The instructions and other information can be found at http://www.vaeb.uscourts.gov/.

From what I have read, Chapter 7 is "easier" and you get a more or less clean slate, but at a heavy personal cost. If you have a job and can support a repayment plan, then Chapter 13 seems like the better route.

You found someone to do your bankruptcy filing for $1000? Good luck with that. While the paperwork may be correctly filled out, you are not going to get much advice and may regret this decision in 12-18 months. Like I mentioned before, if you can read basic English I would try to file pro se and save the money. Otherwise, a reputable attorney is going to charge $3000-3500 for a Chapter 13 and $1500-2000 for a Chapter 7.
